Oh look, now people can play one of the most controversial and polarising games of 2020, again?
The fact that THIS won GOTY and not Ghost of Tsushima still bugs the ever-living crap out of me.
Also, and i really mean this: "W H Y?"
I have ps5 friends who are asking the same damn question... just... why??

It says a lot for how mediocre 2020 was for gaming that TLOU2 and GoT were actually the frontrunners for GOTY.
FF7 Remake was the actual best game of the year though.

I have to agree there were a lot of great games that probably were more deserving, like Hades, Doom Eternal and even Animal Crossing. any while i still haven't finished FF7 Remake part1 on PC (mostly because of the awful audio bugs that have not been fixed yet)- that was also a title that probably deserved more attention then it got.
But looking back that was also a VERY weird year for gaming; Covid kind of put us in this different space that made things like the Game Awards- more bizarre then it usually is; and that was also the year the nominations were structured differently and even the voting was actually done differently -as it was handled primarily by the press and media rather then the fans that year. (which could explain why TLOU2 sweep the awards category - because if the fan votes had the weight back then that they do today; I'm not sure things would have turned out the same.)

You know, if we're talking about the lasting legacy of these games, Hades probably was the biggest game of that year. Not many games have its staying power or its level of respect.
Also, 2020 was at least marginally better than 2021. No way Deathloop or It Takes Two would have been up for the nomination in a good year.
Ghost did win best art direction. The list of contenders that year sure was anemic though. dayum
Wonder how people feel they would stand up to Spiderman 2 and GoW:Ragnarok. Didn't really think Spiderman 2 could be so much cooler than the first.
Sometimes I think franchises just get the nod because they're huge, epic, and venerable and it's just expected that one of them will get it. This year it will probably be Zelda.

Not even in the same universe of quality as either. Norse GoW is Sony's best franchise by far, and no one does open world traversal as well as Insomniac.
I am astonished you are questioning why it won Goty. You do realize that the gaming industry has angst about the games that are popular? They wring their hands thinking about how much we love shooting and slashing things. Along comes a good game which is primarily story, emotion, personnel interaction.
It was the game the industry wanted to be GOTY to show how progressive it is. But for that genre it was a really solid game, it deserved to be in on the short list for sure.

Yes, I agree because narrative focused games like that can get overlooked and I like that style of game a lot. So, I see how they're often overlooked for more action-oriented coop/multiplayer titles.
Ghost has great art, sound, and narrative though. It isn't a brainless combat simulator It did win for art, but I think people tend to take the narrative in these games less seriously or lower quality.
This is why I hate "game of the year" awards (all game awards actually) because it's ultimately meaningless, outside of the sales boost which we know is all that really matters, and does a disservice to all the other quality games that exist alongside it. The Highlander mentality in gaming irritates me to no end.

While think we need innovation in gameplay as any form of entertainment gets stagnant, the idea that studios turn their noses up at fps, driving games and the like really annoys me. Those games made gaming great and set it on the path to become the biggest entertainment money spinner there is. It is exactly the same as TV executives turning their nose up at really popular programs they don't think are worthy of the channel. Mrs Brown's Boys and Top Gear on the BBC are examples, not a fan of those two myself but if they pull audiences in stop being so snooty about them.

They have categories for those kinds of games, and I'm sorry, but if a game isn't artistically/culturally significant, it isn't the best game of the year. It's just junk food. It's like saying we should make the biggest Marvel movie of the year the best movie of the year just because it made the most bank.

I'm a big fan of Mrs. Brown. It isn't my favorite, but I love it in doses.
The pretentious artsy fartsy snootiness of how and which games and franchises are chosen for awards categories is yet another reason I don't care about them.
Games should also have to be published on at least 2 other platforms in order to qualify as well. If it's going to be "culturally relevant" in a globalized sense, then it should be broadly available and not gated to a platform.
I'm one of the few who actually liked TLoU2 and still I think this is the most unnecessary remaster so far and before it was the remaster of the first TLoU. I mean the whole appeal of remasters and remakes is to bring OLD classics to a more modern standard. Even TLoU1 still looks beautiful. I just don't get it.

So you think a GotY should be "artistically/culturally significant" and therefore a FPS/driving game/slasher cannot be? So Bayonetta, Doom Eternal (others as well), which got nominated should not have been? Shooting and slashing does not equate to junk food.
Hey guys, there is a process I call "awards drift" it occurs in all awards given for anything. It means awards get every bigger, more categories, higher scores (gaming reviews etc) and so on. I just noticed something new, every year so far there have been five nominees for goty, this year there are six. Classic awards drift.

No, I don't think an FPS or driving game should be the GOTY unless it also offers a quality narrative. The difference between a good FPS and an amazing one is far more minute than the difference between a good melee action game and an amazing one. I also don't think Bayonetta has ever been the best game of any of its release years. Not by far.
And this year has 6 because the competition is just that much more intense. 2023 is epic.
Oh look, now people can play one of the most controversial and polarising games of 2020, again?
The fact that THIS won GOTY and not Ghost of Tsushima still bugs the ever-living crap out of me.
Also, and i really mean this: "W H Y?"
I have ps5 friends who are asking the same damn question... just... why??
Isn't it interesting as well that while this game was very polarising, you had Hogwarts Legacy that caused some drama this year and is not nominated to ANY award this year, while in my opinion, easily belong sto some categories. I feel like the award is starting to lose its value.

I get that the snubbing of HL was likely intentional/political... but also, this is absolutely not a year where that sticks out like a sore thumb, where it might have been in a weaker year like 2020-21. Because no, HL is not one of the best games of THIS year, and I struggle to think of categories where a 7/10 Ubisoftian open world RPG would actually merit nominations. Maybe soundtrack.

Well, at least I am happy that Starfield didn't make the nomination either. About time that Bethesda gets a good kick in the face and start accepting they need to ditch that horrid 20 year old "out of support" Gambryo game engine and get on with the times!

Yeah. It's not a snub if Starfield didn't earn it.

Don't get me wrong though. I had some fun with the game, but it starts to get really tiresome to keep seeing these same (now almost 20 year old) bugs and glitches in Starfield (and every Bethesda game before that), which trace all the way back to Elder Scrolls: Morrowind.

For reference on the whole Bayonetta thing, Bayonetta 1 shares its release year with Dragon Age Origins and its worldwide release with Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption. Bayonetta 2 shares its release year with Divinity Original Sin. Bayonetta 3 shares a release year with Elden Ring and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. So no, it was never even close to the best game of any year it released in, and I don't know why Scot brought it up.

Are you happy this site rates Spiderman 2 an 8, while giving BG3 a 10? That's really sums up this site in a nutshell. This is why goty stuff is stupid and who deserves what or doesn't. It's a complete circle jerk.
GoW: Ragnarok wasn't even nominated last year. I guess that dumpster fire didn't deserve it either?

BG3 is absolutely a 10. Like, it's not just a top tier game. It's an achievement. It is a studio punching immeasurably above their weight class.
And I think Spiderman 2 justifiably is an 8-9, just like the first one. And I could also see where someone could rate it a 10.
GoW Ragnarok also should have been nominated last year. That's a snub. But it's also a snub that they probably reasonably justified on the grounds that its predecessor already won GotY and was basically the same game.
