Well, of course it's not "bafflingly so", what a strange idea... As per their earlier announcement, they will be discontinuing their pre-orders (including alpha access) in mid-January. Of course they would make such long-term announcement now, duh!
I mean, isn't it obvious? "Last chance to buy a pre-order pack if you want to join our next test in 2024!"; just before the holiday season too, what a shocker. Truly baffling.
(Also, there was quite an advance warning back in 2021 during the last alpha test, so this isn't that unusual. But it's all about the upcoming pre-order deadline anyway, so who cares about the 2021 timeline.)

They are shutting down Alpha packs for now just because they don't need more testers. As testers lose interest, yes they will sell them again.
The Archer does look impressive. They did show off a number of skills but they were from many builds. No archer will have access to all of the skills shown. I'm also not a fan of the mechine gun skill they showed. Really loved the movement skills.

Hint- They arent selling packs today "because they need more testers". They are selling the packs to make Stephen money. They have a history of pushing FOMO to drive sales. They will reconfigure it. Rename it. but at the end of the day, they will sell access again before this test next year.

You speak a little but of truth. Steven is running a business but FOMO is not the problem. Steven running a business is not going to sell more seats then they have space because that would be bad business and cuse distrust on a level it would hurt their business.
What I said is true. They are 100% running out of space for more Alpha 2 players. It's also true, they will not need to name it something else. When they need more testers they will just sell the same packs they have been to get Alpha 2 access. They have closed and opened this door more then once.
Sure they are looking to make money but that's not the whole picture lol

Hint - Game development takes money. It is a catch 22 situation. Either you sell cosmetic packs and you guys shit on them or you sell to Tencent or other investors and they force you to add pay to win and they still get shit on.
Gamers think developers should be making games for non profit out of the goodness of their hearts or something.

But wait, fans often say Ashes is being totally self funded by Steven personally, most recent figures I've seen is up to $50M even.
So they don't even need the money apparently....or so some seem to believe.

It’s not possible to totally self fund something and also use external money. That’s kind of self-explanatory.

You count game cosmetic sales as external money? So was he never allowed to do pre orders either? No one else but Steven is funding this game. The rest of the money is coming from customers. Surely you dont count customers as investors, right?

You definitely do not understand what SELF funded means. See, SELF Funding means only YOU fund the game. CROWD funding is when you convince other suckers to pay you to make the game and use THEIR funds, plus maybe your own, to maybe make a game
