It's not a lie it's what's planned at this time with the Data they have available.

Doesn't mean it cant change in the future.

Gamers need to understand that many factors in game development change constantly,  including whatever plans a dev might have spoken about.

Factor that in everything about gaming and you'll stop falling into the "angry gamer" mode every time something doesn't go as expected.
I disagree that a Crowdfunded game is actually going to stop Pre orders years before release.  I think you are lying if you think that is an actual possibility. Some people even lie to themselves.
I don't think they will (it's just leaving money on the table) but they could have been in talks with private investors to secure the rest of the funding needed to push them to early access stage of playability without us ever knowing.

We need to remember that letting more players test involves more dev/server and player management costs.

Opening the game to the masses will bring more money but also more eyes and consequentially noise around the development that I'm not sure they want just yet.

If you are really following Ashes, the updates this year have been really great stuff and all ingame, gameplay, new game systems, nodes shown off, crafting, skill tree's, new classes shown, events, corrupted zones, caravans and the events and Gameplay that's tied into it, showing off UE5 fully implemented and that's just what I can name off the top of my head. Oh ya and the announcement for the last Alpha phase, Alpha 2 in 2024. Do we even like games here anymore?

Let me ask you about THIS part:

which also will note the end of Pre-order packs, that the team plans to stop selling on January 17th, 2024. They state that these packs will no longer be sold as they have “hit the number of Alpha 2 testers we are aiming for”. Here’s to hoping Ashes of Creation has a fantastic 2024, and that plenty of players get their hands on it in Alpha 2.

Do you believe this is legitimately the last time they will sell Pre-Order packs? Does it count if they rename them as Early Access packs? See, IMHO it's the blatant BuLLSHIT like this that turns me off to the developer. It's blatantly BULLSHIT yet it's posted over and over again by fans and sites which just creates the FOMO that the developer wants in order to get people to pay up so they don't "miss out" on their "last chance.
Is this OK in your mind? Does the end (more money for Stephen) justify the means?

I won't even get started on the uselessness of the term "Alpha2" and how it's almost a year away. When is RELEASE? But at the end of the day, that's secondary to the blatant FOMO bullshit that's being pushed and propagated. Sorry, IMHO it's NOT OK and the ends do NOT justify the means.
Good question. I don't have much of an answer. Think it falls under the same category every tech company is doing. I remember when I used to buy Microsoft Office once every few years and now I have to sub to use it yearly. Amazon adding a $3 a month charge to remove ads that never used to be there. Cant seem to buy games anymore, everything is a live service that needs me to pay developers monthly. Corporate business has learned making us pay for everything we want makes them even richer. None the less. I'm pleased I could pay $50 to get Alpha 2 but I hate the fact this used to be something testers got for free. World sucks and all we can do is try and make lemonade. None of it is fair, what ya gonna do?
Thats not even close to being the same.  You are literally excusing what you know to be a lie. They are saying this is the end of Pre Orders.   You know and I know that this is untrue.  It's a blatant lie IMHO.  There is no excuse.

And you didn't pay $50 to get Alpha 2.  You paid $130.  You could have bought the game for $25 at that same early access Kickstarter.  The extra $105 is what you paid for testing access...

At the end of the day they can charge whatever they want for whatever they want.  Where it crosses the line is when people support obvious lies, just in order to further a game that they have taken up as a cause.  Yes, THESE Pre Order packs will be retired.  They will be replaced with some other Pre-Order pack, renamed as Early Access, or True Believer or something else. To think that they are done selling access in Jan 2024 for a game not releasing until 2025 at the earliest... is simply disingenuous.

I think it's just what I said. Steven is running a business. Business know people want to Alpha and Beta test. We used to apply and list all the reason why we would make good testers. Demand was always higher then the spots available.

Selling spots is a great way to make money. I 100% agree this is gouging the gamers just to make money. But I can't count how many games I was invited to test that I had no interest in, so I'm thrilled to fork out $50 bucks to test a game Im excited about.

Flip side is they need testers that will engage. So it's a fact, most people have no clue what alpha testing means. So if IS does not have enough people engaging in the testing process, they will sell Alpha packs again and its 100% needed and its also 100% a lets take more money from the fans.

Steven said clearly and I don't doubt. They have all the Alpha testers they need. It does nothing to sell more slots then they need. I just don't agree with you that it's just a greed thing but it's not just a greed thing. They need testers that will engage. When testing was free, we would see new waves of invites for the same reason. Not all the testers kept testing.

As for what I paid. Was not trying to deceive. I have always been open I am a OG kickstarter for this game. I was thrilled over everyone else needing to drop $250 or $350. I forget the cost. I only needed to pay $50 to get Alpha 2 access.
It's not a matter of needing more testers.  Its a matter of needing to support the supposed 170 person development team.

Thats the difference between you and I. You only see the negative side of it and there is some of that but the other side. They won't sell more Alpha 2 packs then they need testers. IS needs to pay money to keep servers running. Alpha 2 is persistant testing. Unlimited testers would cost IS too much money. Time will tell. :)
The article states that PRE ORDER PACKS were stopping. Not just Alpha 2.

It's not a matter of needing more testers.  Its a matter of needing to support the supposed 170 person development team.  Let's just assume they are paid $100k in salary and benefits to keep the math simple.  That's a burn rate of $17,000,000 a year.  Just for salary.

Pre-Order packs are not going to stop being sold for the next year.  It's not a "greed thing".  It's a lying thing IMHO.  I don't really care if they charge $10k for pre-orders.  Just be honest about it.

One doesn't need to be a game developer to understand burndown / burnup rates which for 170 person staff can be pretty fierce no matter what the salary rate is.

I don't believe Ashes pulls in anywhere near enough cash to sustain this for too long, unless they start selling space ships of course, then maybe.

Yup and that's what they will do. As I stated above. Just like when testing was something companies used to hand that out for free. When enough testers stopped testing, they would invite a new wave of testers.

If Ashes testers are not testing. IS will need more testers and they will sell packs again. This is not a trick of FOMO as you put it. It's just how it goes with testers. They lose interest over time and they need to be replaced. Maybe that wont be IS problem and enough of the testers will be active.

Myself. I will only test what interests me. I'm not gonna join the stress tests. I find that boring. Most likely I will play allot of the seige and large scale PvP stuff. My wife loves dungeons and crafting. So I will join her on that. Testers have their own agenda. Game companies have theirs.

Again- I will call that bullshit.  There is zero chance that Pre-Order packs are not sold for the roughly one year until Alpha 2. Being "full" (LOL) for Alpha 2 has zero to do with selling packs for any phase after Alpha 2.  But they have all the fans (and websites) propagating this idea that you gotta buy in NOW before it's gone.  Too funny. Remember when the Pre-Order packs were going away in Sept?

People speak in absolutes and make plans the same way. Then RL happens as you make plans. I personally laugh on the inside when people speak in absolutes. I choose to see the best in people till they prove me wrong. I believe in redemption and people righting wrongs and forgiveness. Steven has 100% made mistakes on his path to making this game but IMHO he is a gamer at heart trying to make the game he has dreamed of playing. I'm ok with that.

Nice deflection. Again, there is ZERO chance that no Pre_orders (whatever they might be renamed) will be sold until the game launches.  ZERO.  Stephen has proven to be dishonest numerous times, all the way back to the original Kickstarter and the PCGamer article and how he broke the Kickstarter Rules related to pledges.  To the best of my knowledge he never even had the decency to apologize to the PCGamer writer.

"Update, 2 June: After this report was published last week, we received conflicting accounts regarding Ashes of Creation’s referral program and whether or not it included donations received through Kickstarter. As the original story states, a Kickstarter spokesperson told us that this was against their rules and that Kickstarter had informed Intrepid Studios, who had complied by removing Kickstarter pledges from the referral program. Intrepid Studios’ Steven Sharif then released this statement via MMORPG.com’s forums, asserting that our reporting was false. As Sharif’s statement directly conflicted with what Kickstarter initially told me, I followed up with Kickstarter. This was the response, which confirms our initial reporting as accurate, but also acknowledges that Intrepid Studios did not remove Kickstarter pledges from the referral program: “The information I gave you is accurate, except, as I recently learned, the part where I said that this creator had excluded Kickstarter pledges from their referral program,” Kickstarter’s director of communications, David Gallagher, told me in an email. “[Intrepid Studios] told us that Kickstarter pledges would be removed from the program, making it entirely separate from the Kickstarter project, which we saw as an acceptable solution. It appears that this did not happen. [Intrepid Studios] said this week that based on [their] communication with us, [they] believed it was fine to continue to include pledges. That was not correct.”

No deflection. People make plans and RL laughs at us. If I stopped playing games or following games ever time someone was wrong, or changed course. I would not be playing any games.

After they announced Alpha 2 between July-Sept this year. Even if they make that dead line, my guess Alpha 2 has to run a minimum of a year and beta normally 6 months as there is a beta 2 and 1. We are a minimum of 2 years to launch. If they are late...

And you think it's not a lie when they say no more Pre-Orders?  Minimum of 2 years till launch?  Come on.  Pure fake FOMO.  Gotta get that XangoJuice while you can.

So you have any new meterial? Can we ever have a discussion about anything relevant that's happening now? I suggested a real thing we can talk about. How about something like. I don't agree a game this big in scope will need at least 2 years of alpha? Yes we get it. Steven was wrong in over selling something he could not do but there is a game here we can talk about. With really intrsting mechanics and systems that have been shown off.

You will have a year to discuss that before you play it.  At least.  Don't worry, plenty of time.   In the meanwhile, if an article literally mentions the fake "end of pre-orders" I'll comment on it.  Every time.

Two big differences. Ashes only selling cosmetics and testing access, not items you should be earning in game. If Steven keeps to his word, skins is all you will ever be able to buy.

Second Ashes teams has already stated Alpha 2 is the last stage before they move to Beta. Ashes business model is not a forever development.
A lot of people do think you should be able to earn cosmetics in-game though. Then it doesn't make a single bit of difference WHAT people are spending money on, just that they are able to continually spend money on something way, way, way ahead of its release.

You are in absolutely no position to claim it is not in a forever development cycle. Are they bringing in continual revenue without a completed game? Yes, and as a result they can just drag things out indefinitely. Again, you sound just like the Star Citizen true believers.

This is the same sort of thing the Star Citizen believers used to say, and look at how that's coming along.
Just fine and still as much truth to it today as it had all those years ago. Games can take a lot of time to make, the more ambitious they are the more time they will take. Just because some gamers prefer to stay ignorant about game development doesn't render facts and logic useless. B)

Most people don't care about the development cycle of a game, they just want it to be properly released in a functional state, so they can play it.
If you don't care about the development cycle of a game why come to a thread about the development of a game? Seems counterproductive to say the least :D

You couldn't have missed the point by more if you tried. It's not an issue of a game taking a long time, it's an issue of asking for money from the end user so very, very far away from its delivery date.

People love to keep going on about how much of a "scam" The Day Before supposedly was, but they at least didn't ask for money from the end user, until they had something to sell, it just turned out to be shit, and every player that spent money on it, will/did get their money back. If you ask me, what the Star Citizen, and Ashes of Creation devs are doing, is far worse than what The Day Before devs did.

I'm not following their supposed development, as near as I can see, they aren't trying to make a game, they just want to make money from selling the dream of a "perfect" game, and that's something I don't like. I will comment in threads about these plagues on the industry all I like, and there's not a thing you can do about that.

Hnm that's called pre-judging. When you don't not what makes up something and you decide who or what someone or something is.

Back up, look at the past 4 or 5 updates on Ashes. Now that they have upgraded to UE5 the pace of what they have done in 2023 has been impressive.

As for asking for money. You don't need to back the game, you can just wait for it to come out and play it. Anyone backing the game will have no advantage over you playing it day one. IS is just selling cosmetics and access.

Well I think there IS a headstart right?  That, combined with playing experience can be a huge edge. It's a PvP game with territory control so 2 days can be big. That said, it's not outrageous and can be largely overcome by opening new servers on full release day.    The game has had a ton of development issues but P2W isn't anywhere near the top of the list.

I'm not sure on a Headstart. I don't remember that listed in the two packages I bought. I'm sure over the next 1.5 to 3 years I Alpha test. I will learn allot of things that at launch will give me a huge advantage but all testers in every game has had that advantage but such advantages quickly fade away with time. In the end, what you earn in game and your skill will define who wins a fight. Not my glowing sword skin.

Oh no, the results of a fight will largely be determined by who WTF dogpiles their opponents the most efficiently.

Per the Kickstarter- those who paid $150 for Alpha 2 would get a one day headstart and those that paid around $500 would get a two day headstart.

How's that an issue? Kickstart / Crowdfunding campaigns are just pitches for the masses. Nobody is forced to pledge for them.
