Where do you get your gaming news?

cameltosiscameltosis Member LegendaryPosts: 3,832
Following on from Kyleran's thread about too many games and marketing, I was wondering where you all get your gaming news / marketing from? Do you have specific websites that you visit for news? Who do you trust most? Are there individual bloggers you follow because their tastes match yours?

For me, these are the websites I visit, in the order I visit them:

1) Massively OP
Tends to have the most news, and most up-to-date news, about the MMO world. Also includes a lot of junk about non-mmos, moderation/comments isn't good. But, on the whole, if I want news about my favourite genre, this is the place. Site design is also quite clean, really easy to browse through news stories.

2) MMORPG.com
Mostly for the forums. You lot tend to be much better about discussing games in detail than gaming journalists. Plus, after nearly 20 years on this site, I've come to know you all, which means your opinions count for more. For example, if Kyleran says he enjoys a game, it probably means that game can be played for 10+ years. If Amaranthar says he likes a game's combat, then I know I'll probably like it. If bcbully says he likes a game, its probably a cryptoscam. I don't bother much with the news articles here, unless an article starts stacking up comments.

3) Eurogamer
I like the reporting on this site, seems a lot more mature than it's contempories. Also, site design is quite clean, my eyes don't end up bleeding due to over the top adverts. I think these guys are based in the UK too, so their style is easier for me to accept (im british). They don't really have the bredth I'd like, but tend to have more industry news filtering through thanks to their sister site, GamesIndustry.biz

4) PCGamer
Terrible site design, half the reporters sound like 14 year olds who've only just discovered gaming (everything is great!!!!) and completely useless reviews. BUT, they easily have the most news about upcoming games. I come here mainly to find out what interesting new single player games are coming down the pipeline. A good proportion of games I buy, I first heard about on PCGamer.

and then if im really bored..

5) GamesIndustry.biz
These guys have some amazing behind-the-scenes industry news, and tons of interviews. But, 90% of it is completely irrelevant to me as a consumer of games. I don't care about stock prices, successful investment rounds, or the new hiring policy of a studio. So, i don't visit often, but the quality of their writing is really good and insightful (e.g. this article on cyberpunk's turnaround that i was reading last night).

As you can see, im very much a "traditional" kinda guy. I haven't embraced social media at all, never really bother with youtube, don't follow any specific people.

So, how about you lot?

    Mostly Reddit I guess.

I also subscribe to periodic newsletter updates from a few of my favorite companies and games, like Crate, Colossal Order/Paradox, Hello Games, Two Point, The Fun Pimps, Xbox/Microsoft, and a few others.

Mostly I get gaming recommendations or ideas from my reddit subs and the Xbox game feed. Between GamePass suggestions and new releases and the "Free Demo" category in the Store, I see lots of new and different stuff.

Most other kinds of meta news are not that interesting to read except for the lulz.

Before I buy a game, I look at the Xbox reviews and see if there are any problems with crashes, saves, or jank and then if the studio has handled it.

I usually google search or youtube search for game info and reviews.  And eventually google feed or youtube recommendation will auto come up with game info base on my previous search.

I guess mmorpg.com, massively, and then when I see some video on youtube about some game, I watch it and then go searching the web for news.

for single player games it more "catch as catch can" so isn't really one specific place.

Most games have been in development for over 10 years now. Who would look at gaming news if there not producing anything?

I get information from the homepage or from google. Besides, there is also a dark part to listen to phone ringtones to help play the game better. and it comes from sonnerie téléphone gratuite which is amazing.

Game Industry Biz for more serious info regarding the industry, like this story

More than 500 games earned over $3m on Steam in 2023

The platform also reached 33 million concurrent users for the first time

It's like Steam is the world's biggest MMO.

Twitter, Reddit and random forums mainly. But I'll occasionally look at news on something like google and see if there are any announcements I didn't see elsewhere.
