The name of this thread is "Biggest game WORLD" which means that Eve and any other space MMO isnt included unless you only count actual land masses in those space MMOs. SWG would be included in this thread as that game has actual land masses and not just space. For space MMOs to be included the name of the thread would have to read "Biggest game Universe"
Oh FFS. In that case you cannot include ANY game that does not map an entire planet since that would only be a game AREA not a WORLD.
Game "world" refers to the game space players have to play in and explore.
aside from EVE with its vast tracts of emptiness. I think SWG was pretty big, 10 planets at 15km x 15km each and 12 space zones at 15km x 15km x 15km (and not vast emptiness). Plus everything else they have added instance wise
By the sounds of it though DnL is the winner but did it even get released outside of beta? I stopped paying much attention to it when my friend said he was going to pay them to get into beta. (I laughed at him for paying to beta.. then again when he got screwed over)

15km x 15 km huh?
How did you measure that? Based on what the Developers said?
You do know that game worlds are often scaled huh?
An example of why this does not work:
Earlier in this post someone quoted Darkfall as being 5000 square kilometres?
Apparently it takes about 3 hours of running to "cross the map" in Darkfall.
Look up "Marathon" on the web.
20km = 2hours for a fit modern athlete without armour.
So 3 hours = approx 60km?
60km x 60km = 3600sq.km.?
And that is IF everything is to scale and the physics is set up exactly the same as in real life?
It's ignorant to exclude space faring games just because they operate on the scale of astronomical units or light years. Not to mention that it is a pretty feeble argument to say some games don't count because their game worlds aren't literally a spherical rotating ball of dirt. If we go by that stupid logic then tell me just how many mmo's out there actually have literal game worlds? Not many I suspect.
Honestly, the only common measuring stick among all the mmo's is "travel time" via game default method of traveling. That's the only way you're ever going to compare different game worlds. Don't tell me that game world XXX has the largest game world just because it has 2000 sq. miles when it only takes your character 30 mins to walk across the map, yet game YYY has a world only 30 sq miles but takes your character 14,440 mins to walk across.
The question you should be asking is which game takes the most time to travel and visit the majority of the gameworld using the default method of movement.
Fuel is the largest seamless world and takes 3-4 hours to cross the whole map in a vechile. On foot which cannot be done, but if it could would probably be estimated at 7-8 hours. And yes that is real time. It's trully insane how large the gameworld is and its no loading open world racing. And it can go online with upto 12 racers I beleive.
Not really an MMO then...
Can't believe you read that post and somehow passed by me saying its not an MMO.
And Gryus, your logic is flawed. If the game world is created, regardless of use, its still the game world. The title of this thread does not say the largest playfield, it says game world. That in itself means, usuable and non usable space. So if POTBS is that large, then by god it is. Eve should also be considered.

EVE: Anyone who has played EVE for more than a few months and isn't trying to defend "their" game can honestly tell you that 99% of the EVE universe appears to have been sent thru a random generator for number of planets/moons/non-player points of interest. As such, I doubt its validity for a measurement of made "content."
SWG: Each star wars galaxies planets are deceptively small the fact remains that running in a straight line you can get anywhere relatively quickly.
EQ1: Huge. The North Karanas alone could take upwards of 45 minutes to cross, and there are several hundred zones.
Vanguard: Big, but nowhere near EQ1 size.
EQ2: Dunno.
WWII Online: Absurdly large. Not really "content", but in terms of map size enormous.
WoW: Larger than it seems, but nowhere near the level of size that EQ1 or WW2O is currently.
FFXI: It seems big, but I can't get anywhere without dying. I'd love to hear more detailed info in regards to this game world.

This is the method I used for my comparisons (from the thread I linked earlier.)
Let's define a unit of measure.
The Dtu*** (For Distance time unit) = and yes, if you can think of a better name I will use that!
Defined as: The distance a basic character / avatar / vessel* can move in one hour at a standard pace**.
*Basic character is the default character at new character creation. Unbuffed by skills, abilities or equipment. Preferably human if possible.
** Standard Pace: At a run (since this is the default mode for most MMOs). Not at a sprint.
In games using vessels this is to be at maximum cruising speed.
*** Why use this unit? Because it eliminates arguments over what is a kilometre / mile etc and allows games like EvE to be fairly compared.
In other words - create a new character in the game in question.
Move in a straight line at standard pace or gait for as long as you can (cross the whole world if possible)
Record what you do and the time it takes to do it.
A key fact here (as with all good 'science' is that your experiment must be repeatable - that allows others to verify your measurement)
None of this represents gameplay, content, game elements or the enjoyability of the games.

You clearly do not get the concept here.
The world we are talking about are Virtual. They do not really exist. Therefore they have no real measure.
They can be as big or as small as the developers say.
It tells us nothing.
What say the developers of Darkfall were to announce today that Agon is in fact the land of Giants and that ALL Darkfall characters are in fact 10 metres tall in our terms?
Does that make Darkfall 5 x bigger?
No.
'Distance' and our perception of it is a measure of how difficult it is to travel that far and how long that travel takes.
Is it a long way to your local shops? No?
What about if you were the size of an ant? Or only moved as fast as a snail?

It's simply an out and out 'size' comparison.
I would love more data on any games out there.
Eve would win hands down then if you are going by time to cross from one side to another, using a interceptor, before the speed changes, I was able to leave myself flying in a straight line for more then 6hrs and not reach the other side or anywhere close to it. using the starter ships would be even slower.

I played a druid for 8 years in EQ1 and I can say for a fact that crossing North, South and East Karanas(all together) would only take me about 7 or 8 minutes. If it took you 45 minutes to cross North Karana than you had to be walking and snared at the same time. With SoW, Levitate and Invisible on, I travelled very quickly. I would say perhaps 30 minutes to cross from Freeport to Qeynos and that would be with me doing a bit of sight-seeing along the way. IMO, Kunark was bigger than the original EQ continents. Velious was very linear and was easily run from the biginning to the western wastes. Planes of Power was more of a hub expansion that consisted of individual zones whicked spoked off the central hub. Each of these zones were close to the same size as Vanguard's chunks. The only reason that EQ1 has more landmass is because it has been out 8 more years than Vanguard. It you compare original content to original then Vanguard would beat most games out there by a long shot.

I personally got the impression that the three continents of Vanguard were about the same size or perhaps even a little smaller than the ten or so planetary systems of Star Wars Galaxies. Equally, almost all aspects of the SWG panets (excluding the crappy Kasshyk and Mustaphar expansions were navigable) whereas I seem to remember that a large percentage of VG was actually closed off to players via barriers and non-navigable areas. Do I remember that correctly?
I would say EVE has the largest map by far. There are SOOO many systems in that game and numerous regions to explore within each one of those systems.
It would be like running across the Barrens in WOW over and over again, except with no trees, rocks or objects of any kind. Ok, maybe a few randomly placed rocks=) Just flat ground and sky, copied and pasted 1000s of times. CCP could litterally make a new system in Eve in probably an hour. Copy 1 system, rename it, do a color/hue/saturation shift to the background map and viola, new system. What the heck are you exploring in Eve? Every system is nearly identical in a completely random, empty kind of way;) Is it big? Hell yes. Is it big due to any real effort? Not exactly. Eve's size would be like combining every server in WOW into 1 world and call character transfers jumping between systems, hehe.
The quality of design of the game world matters more than just land mass and Eve has very little actual design at all, much less anything that can be interacted with. But it is big and also the emptiest by far.

in many ways you are quite correct.
WoW seems bigger than its size simply because there is always something to do and (as I said earlier) 'Distance' and our perception of it is a measure of how difficult it is to travel that far and how long that travel takes.
So content (and let's be honest - WoW has heaps) does effect our perception of distance in that game.
But content is very hard to measure too (without Developer inside knowledge). Which is why I restricted myself to travel times.

FFXI to me was the best gameworld with mystery and hidden things to uncover all over the place. Travel was a big part of the game, and it was dangerous. The FFXI game world has been and may always be the coolest and most intriguing game world in my eyes. Hopefully FFXIV lives up to it.
My question is out of the MMORPG's what is the biggest game world. After playing EQ, EQ2, WoW, Lineage 2, LOTRO, Guild Wars, and Vanguard. I would have to say hands down it is Vanguard. I would love to hear what other people think.
I've played EQ2 (2 months thought), Lineage II (far too long), GW Factions, LotR and WoW.
From these 5 I think GW has the smallest world, then again, I only had Factions...
After that I think Lineage II is the smallest one, though the various expansions in the past have made it enourmous, and the latest with the Gracia Continent, I think it's getting pretty big now (haven't been there though - rerolled on a new server this week and I don't bot, so no 75 char yet on the other server)
EQ2 is big, but as said before, also very ugly...
LotR has a massive world, but not fully explorable, though I must say, that after 1 year, I've been to area's in lower level parts that I've never seen before
WoW massive, but also with huge low / unpopulated landmasses...

Hmm I always thought WoW was way overpopulated with mobs. Everyplace I went you couldn't walk 5 feet without having to fight something. But then again I never made it past level 50 cuz I always got bored.
Most of you all forget one little MMO, the worst MMorpg.... Dark and light, in terms of land mass, its the biggest land mass in any MMorpg, next to that WWII mmo.
I asked abou this on the anarchy online forums.....
firstly, the original maunal stated about the old rubi ka zones that
"Did you know:
That the settled and accessible areas of Rubi-ka today cover more than 375 thousand square meters, plus an unlimited amount of space indoors? it's a big, big world."
that said, someone took it a set further....

I tried to make an educated guess based on the following estimations/assumptions:
- The height of an atrox guard in NLC is 2 meters (I remember the height of an average atrox being mentioned in some "canon" source but I couldn't remember where so this may be off to begin with).
- This makes the height of one of my chars to be about 1.65 when compared to said guard by standing right next to one.
- When a character is in crawl, his "length" from head to toe along the stretched out leg is roughly equal to his height.
- By comparing the length of this char in crawling to the width of the bridge leading to the Phasefront platform, it came out as 5 meters.
- The width of the same bridge on the AORK map is 1 pixel (aliasing effects aside).
- Comparing this 5m per pixel ratio to other landmarks in similar manner checked out quite accurately.
Based on this ratio, by measuring the pixel dimensions of the zones on the AORK map then doing the math, the size of the zones is as follows:
Avalon: 2900m x 4000m, 11.6 km2
Athen Shire: 1550m x 1850m, 2.87 km2
Wailing Wastes: 2500m x 3500m, 8.75 km2
Coast of Peace + Coast of Tranquillity: 4850m x 2000m, 9.7 km2
Mort: 3325m x 3425m, 11.39 km2
Newland + Newland Desert: 3350m x 2725m, 9.13 km2
(Newland: 1525m x 1025m, 1.56 km2)
Perpetual Wastelands: 3750m x 3100m, 11.62 km2
Aegean: 2100m x 2600m, 5.46 km2
Central Artery Valley: 3200m x 2900m, 9.28 km2
Deep Artery Valley: 3000m x 3650m + 175m x 1700m, 11.25 km2
Varmint Woods: 4000m x 2850m, 11.4 km2
Belial Forest: 3025m x 3025m + 150m x 1100m, 9.31 km2
South Artery Valley: 3125m x 2775m, 8.67 km2
Souther Fouls Hills: 2525m x 3025m, 7.64 km2
Eastern Fouls Plains: 2575m x 3850m , 9.91 km2
Milky Way: 4050m x2375m + 575m x 1925m, 10.73 km2
Pleasant Meadows: 3000m x 2500m, 7.5 km2
Stret East Bank: 1875m x 2850m, 5.34 km2
Tir County + Greater Tir County: 3075m x 2925m, 9 km2
Upper Stret East Bank: 1875m x 2800m, 5.25 km2
Andromeda: 3500m x 2500m + 975m x 1650m, 10.35 km2
Broken Shores: 2150m x 3425m + 1100m x 1450m, 8.96 km2
Clondyke: 1875m x 4050m + 750m x 1625m, 8.82 km2
Galway County + Galway Shire: 2675m x 2600m, 6.95 km2
Lush Fields: 3350m x 3375m, 11.3 km2
Omni Forest + Greater Omni Forest: 2100m x 3025m, 6.35 km2
4 Holes: 1900m x 2275m, 4.32 km2
Stret West Bank + Holes in the Wall: 2375m x 2900m + 1500m x 225m, 7.23 km2
The Longest Road: 4000m x 1500m, 6 km2
Borealis: 875m x 950m, 0.83 km2
Total: 246.91 km2
Notes:
- Measured as rectangular areas encompassing the zone and all subzones within (such as Mutant Domain being inside Lush Fields).
- Zones with irregular shapes were measured by covering them with several (usually two was enough) rectangular areas then adding them up; these are the zones where you see two width x height values.
Since the distances, just as the rate of the passing of time (which seems to be a few times as fast as real time), in the game should be considered as an "abstraction" of the sort, these values should be multiplied by maybe 3-4 to get the actual distances and sizes they are representing; at least this is how I'd tend to interpret them."

It's simply an out and out 'size' comparison.
I would love more data on any games out there.

Earth to Gyrus, already did that or else I would not have replied. Add it's a thread that you post in. You may want to read over what you posted and actually think about. Then as you cruise along, read what I stated.
You have heard of the term 'shrinking world'?
Is the world really shrinking? No. But travel is easier and faster.
So to get a clear and unbiased (by scaling which may or may not be accurate) it is better to use a measure that is consistent.
Travel Time.
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
I would like any current players to provide more info on any of these games
This is the method I used for my comparisons (from the thread I linked earlier.)
Let's define a unit of measure.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
Games with large "worlds" that I've played include EVE and DAOC. (measured in how long it took me to traverse it.)
Never played some of the legendary games like EQ though.
VG was pretty big, but pretty empty back when i played it.

Eve had 55,000 star systems on release. = biggest
Dunno whether they have added to that now or not with the introduction of Worm holes.
More like 4000 and they all look the same
FFXI to me was the best gameworld with mystery and hidden things to uncover all over the place. Travel was a big part of the game, and it was dangerous. The FFXI game world has been and may always be the coolest and most intriguing game world in my eyes. Hopefully FFXIV lives up to it.

Fact!! WW2Online is the largest game ever made. It takes 6 hours of auto pilot on a jet in that game and you will only be half way across that world !
