Earlier today, Square Enix announced the start date of the upcoming FFXIV Beta for Xbox, which kicks off on February 21st. However, more information about the build on Microsoft's platform came to light, namely the requirement of a separate sub to play.

I wonder if Yoshi-P will intervene or if Xbox will make changes to this, because no one's going to pay more than anyone else just because they happen to be on a specific platform.

There was a time when multiple subscriptions fees (very pricey ones) were necessary to play a online game on a computer, but it's not 1991 anymore, and Compuserve and AOL is no longer a thing anymore.

Though i do miss Neverwinter Nights Goldbox

TBH i dont understand Yoshi-P this was the main reason it did not come before was because of the xbox live gold being needed i thought ohh they finally dropped it NOPE. xbox must have paid them alot of money to do this. the new SEnix ceo must have signed off on this i already dislike him very much

Nobody is going to pay for this or play it in the long run. But I'm pretty sure everyone will want to try the beta just for the kicks. I'm fortunate to have already played so much of it on PS3 and PS4 long ago.

I saw this on Reddit today linked to an article on IGN. This is a really big reach for gaming "news" sites to generate some sort of buzz.

Xbox has long required a Gold Sub, now called GamePass Core, for paid games. It's $60/year.

PlayStation also requires a subscription to PlayStation Plus to play online, except for FF14.

I was planning on playing this, but after finding out FF16 was kept off Xbox because Microsoft wouldn't bankroll Square like Sony does, and then this sort of bullshit drama, I'll just skip it.

Most people on Xbox who like to play online games already have GamePass Core, and NO ONE is buying an Xbox console just to play an Final Fantasy MMO.

That all said, I think the fee to play online paid games is long in the tooth, much more so than physical media, which Xbox is moving towards ditching. I'd like to see Xbox drop the fee altogether and fire a shot off the bow to Nintendo and Sony, both of which also still charge for online access.

So some games on consoles require you to have a pass? This is new to me, do we have any idea of how many, what proportion of games need a pass as opposed to those that do not?

This is a worrying development, it will be barrier against the concept that a MMORPG can exist by subscription alone, as players will feel they are paying two subscriptions. Of course many will already be paying the Pass so it is of no difference to them but for the rest it will be an issue.

Oh and good to see gaming media journalists are as baffled as we are by all this studio maneuvering sometimes. :)

Incase you guys ever thought I was trolling about the welfare pass...this should prove it. Gamers will be paying for the ABK acquisition for years to come.

Yoshi P is just the creative director, AFAIK. He doesn't make corporate decision; his overseer does. I've seen how Yoshi P acts around him; so don't blame the director, blame corporate.
