Disney invests $1.5bn in Epic Games and announces major Fortnite partnership

Yeah, from bad to worse.

"The Walt Disney Company has invested $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games, and has announced plans for a major collaboration with Fortnite.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is the controlling shareholder of Epic and "will continue to maintain control of the board following the close of this transaction", Epic told GamesIndustry.biz."

    Nah, it could be worse.  It could be Discover investing.  Or a number of hedge funds.

    I really liked the new Percy Jackson series. I'd be interested in an action RPG like Hogwart's Legacy where you could create a demigod character and unlock and improve powers.

    Other than that I can't think of a Disney universe I'd like to play around in as a game.

    Maybe they're going to work with Epic to create game worlds within Fortnite, or cash shop ties-ins they can monetize. Lego Fortnite is decent. Disney could do stuff like that with Epic, instead of or in addition to standalone games.

    Epic gives me a whole library full of free games wheeeeeee!! Big boost for Epic I guess that investment.

    I wouldnt have guessed that Epic would need financial help....They always came across that they had boatloads of money after Fortnite's success....Maybe they didnt make as much as we were lead to believe?

    When it comes to new ventures as the old saying goes why risk your own money when you can risk someone else's?

    Feels like this decision is a few years too late. I'm sure Fortnite is still popular, but by the time all these new things have been developed, the crowd will have moved on.

    Hardly, and I would have thought the same thing as you and have been expecting it to crash for a few years now. It is not. If anything, it's branching out and embracing the "metaverse" thingy better than developing platforms that promise these things "soon".

    Lego just launched a "Lego Fortnite" mode that is kind of a Minecraft-like survival crafter where you build a town and invite NPC villagers to join you. They perform tasks, crafting, and shop-keeping.

    There are big name virtual concerts on the platform and media hybrids like a comedy special by Trevor Noah.

    I don't quite connect with all the various virtual activities the game platform offers, but it is undeniably still insanely popular. I can see why Disney wants in on that action.

    I know more about nuclear physics than I do about stuff like this.
