Any offerings for the MMO oldheads? (Q1 2024)

nolfnolf Member UncommonPosts: 869
Just wondering if any folks who were MMOing 20+ years ago are around.

What are y'all playing?

Also I'd like to formally apologize for ever flaming or calling the folks saying WoW would ruin the genre alarmist back in the day. Woospies. My b.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

I am still around. I play  FFXI on Horizon private server.
on the side I log into Everquest Project Quarm.

Currently I am conteplating going back to Anarchy Online for a bit.

Long story short- I am just waiting for Monesters and Memmories to come out- the mmorpg langscape is a sad sad joke these days.

    mmorpg junkie since 1999

Don't worry about those old flames either on here or in relationships, post valentines day blues here. ;)

We have been sacrificing something to play the genre we love for ages, these days that just gets harder.

I'm around but not playing mmorpgs anymore. I play small server based games and still play NWN which needs a remake.

Still waiting for any decent game suitable to my tastes that I can make a regular thing.

Strongly considering Nightingale or Enshrouded and not looking back. Valheim could also be a contender.

Throne and Liberty seems like it might be good and especially Endless Tombs.

If Pantheon Launches I'll try it.

Apology accepted and no, have not played a mmorpg in the past 15 years… there is nothing out there or upcoming that will interest you.

Our only hope is that AI can be used to build experience that the current gen of developers are incapable of building.  Until then I play games like LoL to pass the time, but I won’t get heavily invested into a game until one comes out that is worth investing in.

Btw, I did buy Diablo 4 at release thinking it would be the next big thing… boy did I get burned on that.  I will never ever pay list price for a game again, I’m done with these companies.  70 dollars for a complete piece of trash game.

This is why I think players get sucked so easily into crowd funded MMOs, what else new MMO wise is there to play?

Absolutely loads of us.  I don't really play games for any length of time these days and after 3 or 4 weeks on a new game I get bored and move on.  As such I couldn't put forward any of them as "playing" in the accepted sense of sticking to one or two as my mainstays.

I used to many years ago since I started in Everquest in 1999 play the same game for years. Now I don't. I don't see the value in it any more. I prefer to flit about and then go back ever so often after playing other games.

I think it is mainly due to how many more games are out there and having expanded to playing so many single player games I find I am not inclined to play one MMORPG for beyond a few months at best.

The problem is the "at best" lets imagine a world where you took your guild from one MMORPG to the next in a cycle, spend three months here then three months there. This has been suggested on one of my guilds forums but did not get traction. The problem is would enough players even want to play for three months? We see so many games not lasting more than a month it is a risky formula.

But what I think would work is a cycle of tired and trusted MMORPGs, which some small groups within the guilds already do to a certain extent.

My guess is you are less inclined to socialize with strangers hence enjoy playing most games, even online ones in a more solo fashion.

If true, why do you suppose that is?  It's been years since I needed other players to accomplish most goals in modern MMOs, outside of raiding which I decided I did not care for back in 2006 and that still hasn't changed.

Even regular dungeon content holds little appeal unless playing with close friends as most gamers these days are rushing through the content much more quickly than I care for, and I don't want to be the one holding everyone else back.

Still, I prefer to play games with others so have spent quite a bit of time on min-MMOs such as Fallout 76, 7D2D where the populations are smaller or composed of mostly my friends.

One exception was ESO, joined it with 3 friends and along with a veteran player formed our own guild for players who were "tired of chasing firetrucks." ( Part of our recruiting slogan)

We grew to 100 members almost instantly, and even had a raiding group of experienced players who had grown weary of the more demanding raid guilds in the game.

Clearly we were not alone but running a guild took it's toll on me and some others so we left for another game.

The guild carried on for several more years and only broke up last fall when a spat arose between the current raider leader and the guild's leader (one of our 4 founding members).

She disbanded the guild entirely when her core officers including her long time friend sided with the raid leader in order to keep him from quitting.

Still around too. I do not play MMO's as hardcore and dedicated as I use too but ESO is my game of choice. Other than the occasional random dungeon, I do not group much and focus on quests and leveling.

I miss DAOC and would love for it to make a come back. Updated mechanics, graphics, etc... I still login on private servers from time to time but after the nostalgia wave, I realize how dated it truly is.

I downloaded DAoC a few months ago but had the same experience.  Such a great game that was.  I think that the passion developers had in their product is long gone.  Now, the only bottom line is how much money they can make off initial sales.  Look at games like New World.  AGS made a crap ton of money off of release, and it was a total crap game except for visuals.  Yet, probably still considered a success by todays metrics.

I'm still around, too. I started with UO on it's first day of launch and played it for many years. Played WoW, DAoC, and some others. But UO's Sandbox and worldly style is what I really want.
I don't want the player abuse problems though. I can handle it, but those games drive many players away and I want them in my game, whatever that is, if ever one comes out.

I want the PvE game to be advanced and hit the mark.
I want a very social game where players deal with other players all the time.
I want a great Sandbox, and very Worldly game.
I want a great Lore that can be played in various ways.

Basically, a far advanced UO without the grief.

    Once upon a time....

Palia, ESO off and on, my wife and I have been invited to Pantheon testing but life has me to busy to look in on that game but will be soon. Will be trying Throne and Liberty when it launches. Also I have alpha 2 access to Ashes of Creation so over the next year or two. I will be playing that mostly. As for WoW, my wife has been talking about waiting to play her Mage again so that's in my close future as well. Not lots of new stuff but there is allot of the old faithful MMOs with tones of content. Over the next 2 years there is allot of quality MMOs coming out. FYI I love post like this, just looking for something to play.

I still sub to wow one or two months a year.  I’ve been playing a good amount of Palia on the switch.  I still pop into LoTRO once a year or so.  I like to pop in on indie MMOs when they come out- love the idea of people making their own games.  I’ve currently been helping to bug test new client in the game Faldon.

I really like UO style games.  I really like the idea of fractured and Albion and they feel pretty good to play, but I’m old and I start something and start doing the time sink calculations in my head and get cold feet

Most MMOs suck these days to one extent or another. I'm not really super attached to any tbh...Mostly I find things like dailies, or events to do, but don't spend any more time than that in them.

I remain. Though I've been around since the earliest of MMORPGs I don't currently play any of them.

My favourite MMORPG is City of Heroes and with the NCSoft blessing of the Homecoming server I expect their continuance is ensured.

I also play ESO regularly as it well supports my solo tendencies. While the overland is quite easy more challenging play is there to seek out.

I dabble in numerous other MMORPGs as well and keep tabs on several more, giving me a general awareness of that available.

Started with Ultima Online day 1 or 2 back in 1997. Was on this site for a while but left for...reasons...a number of years ago and on a whim yesterday I checked to see if my account was still here.

Playing nothing right now. If it's a top tier game made by a big developer, I've played it and have no interest in going back. All the rest don't meet my expectation level in some facet so not paying for something that I'm not at least 98% happy with.

Pantheon was going to be my next...but 10 years on and still not in full alpha, I'm out. Only MMORPG on my radar right now is Pax Dei. Got to hop into it a few weeks ago with a few friends and liked what we saw.
