What does MMO mean? I say the M in MMO is the Roman numeral for 1,000. If it's called an MMO, it has to be able to have 1,000 players playing together.
What does RPG mean? To me it means "role playing game." In those games, you take on a role in a virtual world, and play it. Then you can come back and choose a completely different role and the game will play differently too. Normally you build up your character as you play, and this is a big part of an RPG. How you build for the role you have chosen.
It sounds like this game might qualify as an MMO, since they claim "thousands" of players together. But nothing was said about any RPG elements.
Can a survival game really be an RPG? How would you start a new game and play it completely differently based on your different role? Does this game have classes? Most RPG's do.
The only survival crafting MMORPG that I've played is Ryzom. It's not really survival except you do have to make all your own tools, weapons, and armor by gathering resources and crafting. It has no classes and no real roles either. You level skills and there is no limit, you could level every skill to max with enough time, so you'd be playing all roles at the same time.
Ryzom like Skyrim lets you level any skill you want, but with limited time (Ryzom) and limited skillpoints (Skyrim) you tend to specialize in a few skills, so kind of like a role.
What RPG elements does this game have?

It is not a blockchain game.
"Described as a “database and server combined into one,” SpacetimeDB is roughly explained as similar to a smart contract system that’s been used for blockchain games but without any association to crypto or blockchain tech whatsoever (since it’s its own database)"
I mean isn't smart contract system synonymous with Blockchain?
https://massivelyop.com/2023/08/10/bitcraft-developer-releases-source-code-for-its-spacetimedb-backend-engine-to-everyone-on-github/
Yep, pretty sure it is and Bitcraft devs are trying to weasel past it
How do smart contracts work?
"A smart contract is a special kind of program that encodes business logic that runs on a special-purpose virtual machine baked into a blockchain or other type of distributed ledger"
https://www.techtarget.com/searchcio/definition/smart-contract
If it looks like a Blockchain and smells like a Blockchain, it's most probably a Blockchain based game.

Procedurally generated worlds and Unity for it's engine, yet somehow their magic "spacetimedb" backend / database will support thousands in a single world.
Which they decided to give away for free.
Now where have I heard this before?
Oh yes, SpatialOS....that sure turned out well, amirite? (Definitely wasn't free either)

The cofounder has talked about blockchain, crypto, NFTs and how it plays into BitCraft here - https://clockwork-labs.medium.com/thoughts-on-cryptocurrencies-and-games-dacfe8051e98
Otherwise we would have labeled this as part of our MMONFT column series.

Just jumping in on what Joseph is saying here. BitCraft's server system is advertised as a "serverless" infrastructure. This is similar to the way some blockchain games (and blockchain engines like Xaya) work. Essentially in these "serverless" games, you're housing data on the blockchain, running off of a decentralized protocol such as Ethereum.
BitCraft's system is serverless, but isn't utilizing a decentralized consensus for the writing of data.
If you consider it like a "centralized" blockchain, their SpacetimeDB doesn't require "servers" but most likely a (possibly) cryptographic chain that can only be changed by authenticated nodes or central authority around the world.
What we're looking at here is a non-monetization use case of a blockchain-like protocol. This use case is hardly new, and hopefully it won't be the last time we see a blockchain use case that isn't filled with buzz words like "tokenomics" and "GameFi".
All that said, BitCraft can also easily be confused with BitKraft, which is a Venture Capital for gaming that deals almost exclusively in Web3 games. The two are unaffiliated as far as I can tell at this time.
Hope this helps!
Happy posting!
One thing which is obvious is they want everything to be freely tradable and they are planning on embracing the concept that RMT will not only exist but is inevitable for "reasons."
Now they plan to design the game in a manner that the RMT won't be "too" pay to win, but once again are very short on details on how this will actually be accomplished.

Talking of tech not even knowing what it is (except that its "BAD"), but today it is enough to spell the word right.
It was a really good time to be honest, the game encourages interaction with other players, but it is also possible (with a good and enjoyable grind) to play solo. There will be another alpha test mid June. So if you want to see for yourself, I recommend getting on their website and registering your interest to try and get in on the next test. https://bitcraftonline.com/
