What is the mmo people love these days ? (March 2024)

ReskalReskal Member UncommonPosts: 57
Hey all,

i play mmo since 25 years and know the most of the old big ones, and have a heart for the good old games. The last years i played steam games but actually i would like to join a mmo again, which is "the XXXX actually" all playing :)
So the most favorite mmo of most people these days.

Would be kind to give me a hint.

ESO and FF14 seem to have pretty solid communities and are both pretty active. Maybe GuildWars2 to a lesser extent.

But, I think the MMO ship has largely sailed. Newer ones don't seem to get the same traction and things seem to have shifted more toward smaller co-op such as the multitude of multi-player, survival games or Helldivers 2 (as a non-survival, recent example).

Not to say there aren't people playing MMOs. Just that it may be tough to get much consensus on a single "most favorite mmo of most people these days."

That's just how it looks to me though. Maybe/Hopefully, others have better ideas...

Ive tried eso so many times over the years, just never stuck with me. As far as FF14 goes, i get an itch now and again and play for a month or two. I would guess most mmo people are on Black desert and wow classic stuff. Embers adrift is kinda cool for old school group play.

    None of the above.

Last MMORPG I loved was EVE Online which I left over 7 years ago.

So what was the point in you commenting here? You bring nothing to the table.

I played UO, then EQ, followed by Anarchy Online and DAoC. I was so naive, when i started UO and EQ i were sure i would play them forever..after a few months i saw a new game and thought: oh ! should i really start a new game and leave this one ??
    Felt like betrayal anyhow :#
Later i found that others do this betrayal too, so ;)

I love games like above, New World i played also but endgame is much like raid and greed. ESO is a nice game also. FF14 i never tried, maybe i should ?
EVE Online i liked too but around 10 years ago sick thing, sick methods came in so i left.
    EQ2 had charme also.

Actually on my list for hopes is DAoC Unchained and Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen and maybe Em8er, its the follow up of Firefall, which has been cancelled.

Oh man firefall, I loved that game. I wish someone would make a private server, I would be on that so fast haha.

This month I've been playing City of Heroes.

It's been great fun making characters and just doing low level stuff.

But, I do remember what the end game is like. Not in a hurry to get to that mess.

I'll throw my cards on the table and say GW2

It's a great "Get in and play" MMO, they have no increased the Level cap, so there is no catch up game you need to worry about, the community is pretty friendly, if you need some toxic assholes in your life, it has PvP and Raids for you get your fix

I like the graphics, but some people dis on them, to each their own on that one

Since it's F2P, with Expansions in case you want more of the game, it's easy to get into, and easy to leave if it is not your thing.

Play the older ones. Their clunkier and slower paced but have more features than the newer ones like Project Gorgon, Ryzom etc That's all a game needs to be a non clunkier version with updated graphics but still have the old school style.

Excelsior has the most people on it, followed closely by Everlasting.

Actually his answer brings a lot to the table. Its a statement of fact that the MMO genre has been very bland and stagnant over the last few years. A null answer is still an answer.

As for me, I am only playing ESO and I have given up hope on any new game coming out. All the ones promised will fall short for one reason or another so I found a home back in ESO. It has everything I want, good questing, housing, fun classes, etc... Its not perfect but I have been putting in some crazy hours in the game lately. I had not played since the Skyrim expansion so I have several expansions worth of content to go through. I easily get my $15 a month worth for sure. And to the above point, we still talk about ESO and FFXIV as some of the best of the genre.... ESO launched 10 years ago and FFXIV before that.

Hardcore Classic Wow on Self Found is my usual stomping grounds.

Until Blizzard ruins it of course, like they ruin all things, especially if SoD is the direction they want to take old Classic.
  • richrem1richrem1 Member UncommonPosts: 198
I've been jumping in and out of Final Fantasy 14. I played a couple of months recently. I will wait until the expansion is released until I play again. I would like to try some others, but frankly there isn't any with the same quality.

WoW classic is a big maybe; but I wind up quitting a month or 2 later because the lack of QoL gets on my nerves. The retail version is usually boring and doesn't keep me.

I'd play ESO; but my last attempt revealed how woke it is (Elswyr), and the UI is garbage. So no go there.

SWTOR is an ok game, but hardly worth a sub; especially when you are blocked by walls in a scifi game.

I tried a sub for EQII and hated it for a lack of any in game feed back; where I had to look up a wiki to know where to go and what to do. I also found the graphics annoyingly bad.

I am not a PvP guy. The only PvP games I actually liked was RFOnline and Skyforge. However, Skyforge is P2W but I still liked the game over all.

The only thing new I"ve tried is Last Epoch, but frankly it's a single player game with a chat that blocks you for saying anything basically, even "Thanks" gets blocked lol. I am already growing tired of the game.

I'm interesting in something new, but what else is there?
