For some reason, I feel this is the first stage in a long road to cancellation. Going dark means no news, no info, no nothing which seems like an odd announcement to me.

Why? Secrecy It's literally how every game has been made before early-access and crowdfunding became an option.

Maybe I am just skeptical. The announcement seems oddly defeatist to me over something that could have been said with less doom and gloom.
But with all the game cancellations, layoffs and everything else negative that has hit the industry lately, it may just be me prepping and bracing for more bad news.
Most modern MMORPG's are just slight alterations and, in some features, upgrades from the previous generations of MMORPG's. So, I'd rather Riot take several more years and release something worthy of bringing the genre to the next generation.
The companies with released MMORPGs have forgotten about the players that made them popular from 1999-2008. They think either we're all neckbeards without a life and want to waste our time grinding our life away, or they think we're all incompetent, no skilled phone gamers, that can only beat the game if we can auto-attack our way to max level.
I hope the next generation focuses on delivering an enjoyable experience in the moment-to-moment gameplay. Not just at max level. Not just for the casuals who want to auto-attack to max level, and not just for the sweaty no-lifers.

That's part of the trade. The first guy in charge of making Riot's MMO (ex blizz GhostCrawler) had one idea for the game and wanted it to be a somehow coloborative effort with community.
That idea was fought by Riot guys so Ghostcrawler left/was fired and founded a new studio to make his new mmo:
What I'm inferring from what little info we've seen is that the lead dev who left wanted to make a traditional cookie cutter themepark. Riot didn't want another half-assed WoW clone, so he departed and they're starting from scratch.
Maybe it will get cancelled, which is better than pumping out shovelware, or maybe they'll find a new more interesting angle to make. I'm okay with that because I feel like the last thing GAAS gaming needs is yet another low effort bland oatmeal clone.
I feel like people forget that League of Legends is still at it's very core, a heavily modified DOTA game, which is also essentially, a super modified version of Warcraft 3.
And i don't mean that figuratively.
Over these past years of RIOT's success with League of Legends, it's still at it's nature, success built off of Warcraft 3's game philosophy, mechanics, rules, game assets, etc.
This is what they built their knowledge of game design from, so it's no wonder they don't really know what to do or have any real direction.

So that left Riot's MMO on a limbo which they now clarified to going back to the old closed style of development.
Don't tell me this surprised anyone?
