I think this will be the expansion this concept dies. Most nostalgia lies within Vanilla to Wrath of the Lich King. A lot of people quit before Cataclysm, myself included.
This was the expansion that caused the first wave of players to quit in a series of expansions that pretty much saw a steady decrease of longtime players switching to another main mmorpg to play, and while future expansions would see some steady bursts of some of those players coming back- WoW would never actually recover completely from that initial lose, and Battle for Azeroth was just a twinkle in a nightmare unbeknownst to players.
Why Bliz..Activision insists on trying to recapture Blizzards greatest hits and worse setbacks is a complete mystery to me, though we know why, but it was and still is a bad idea that is likely going to come at a cost down the road, and the players are going to be the ones left holding the bags.

And also, screw blizzard
It will definitely remind Blizzard that Cata was a huge misstep. But I think there are enough Pandaria and Legion fans to convince them to stick out til then. WoD will do even worse than Cata though.
It's just much easier for them to reuse all of that old code. Why bother making Vanilla+ or Wrath+ until they've tapped the expacs to minimal profitability.

Exactly me!
I am waiting for Legion. Best expansion ever, after Wotlk...or on the same line.
But I will also play a bit of Cata, which I didn't back in the days and also MoP. Maybe even WOD?
Anyway, Legion is where for me WoW "Classic" ends! I have no desire to play beyond that, because BfA, Shadowlands and now little Dragons Dragonflight, are THE worst expansions ever in the history of WoW.

I was surprised but I’m actually looking forward to it. Why? Well for one we know now exactly how bad the game can get.2. I didn’t play much in Cataclysm and I felt more burned out on the game than driven out. We know that instant loaf in zones and cross server play destroys all feelings for the community and interacting with. I hope that they find better ways to handle it on swing number 2. On long term surveys when asked why did quit “x” game number 1-3 will have the response that the community felt disco joined or fragmented. No player accountability are going to be of those 3 entries.
Cataclysm had great dungeon crawling builds and old play styles returned because you needed CC and buffs or off heals like a shadow priest. This had no meaning in WOTLK and those dungeons might as well been straight. But Cataclysm’s dungeons had cool mechanics and different pacing in one area vs another plus with all the dungeon that TBC built 3 or 4 bad ones in passable. Wrath never had that and even the first raid was recycled from the past and I’ve done that at 40 man since 30+ times.
Cata for once was not the gutting of a class and rebuilding on the rubble. It like that and they had to fix it
