From a gamer stand point, it doesn't matter how many units were sold. It just shows how many suckers there were, which is sad.
"Despite the sales success for Capcom, Dragon’s Dogma II’s release has been marred by numerous controversies. The game launched with a number of microtransactions, poor performance, and even lacked the ability to start a new save file until a recent patch rectified that."
This is why I wait. I was looking forward to Starfield; but I waited. I find that waiting is a good thing; so I don't wind up a sucker like every one else, who jumps at the hype.
I am not disputing the overall game wether it's good or bad. But common people, how many times do you gotta get burned until you realize you've been taken advantage of?
Not surprising, much like the Hogwart's Legacy manufactured controversy, the only people that got taken here are those that read low quality SEO driven clickbait articles. If people get that freaked out by optional and ignorable dlc and rmt fluff, then they should wait a couple of years until a rollup bundle is offered at a discount.

Except it’s an absolutely excellent game. I’m not burned at all.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
The microtransaction controversy felt very manufactured and blown way out of proportion. Saw a lot of people spreading misinformation about it too, saying things like Capcom was selling additional character slots to start a new game.
If only people took a few minutes to actually sift through the information instead of being spoon fed what to think from influencers.
Like someone else mentioned, it felt very similar to the whole Hogwarts Legacy "controversy".
By all means enjoy your victory lap, dislikers of criticizers.
But I'd like to point out that the main driver of this game's launch controversy was related to the problems players were having with starting a new game and deleting their one character to start over—I think most of us without controversy regarded these issues as unacceptable. The other issues, however, were generally on the tail-end of that discussion, and I feel quite certain would not have risen to a level of interest worthy of wholly separate articles written on site like this one.
Thus, most of us would not have even noticed, problems or criticisms alike.
That's really not bad, buuuut, also not that great either considering some context and caveats.
That comparison to DD1 in 2012, rewind a bit and let's recall what game(s) came out around the same time.
Here's a hint for one of them, begins with an S, took the world by storm and didn't let go for ...a really long time.
Yes it was Skyrim.
--------------------------
My personal thoughts, and wild speculations on the series in general:
from an outsider looking in; these games have never performed well and i'd wager is usually at a lose for Capcom overall in comparison to its other properties; which makes it's mmorpg outing and it's short-lived nature, very unsurprising.
I think the only thing that this series has going for it is other Capcom properties keeping it afloat, and it's fanbase (me being one of their more rapid fans), because there is a really good action game inside all of this, but i doubt it makes a real profit.
So i understand why they went so frick'n hard this time with the dlc's- it's probably the only bargaining chip DD2 had this time around to even exist, the creators probably had to make a deal that because DDO failed so horribly, the next project would have to push microtransactions more dramatically in order to get greenlit.
The whole deal with the content creators as personal pawns may have also been part of that deal to create some ad visibility that the previous 2 dragons dogma games did not get.
Personal 'talking-out-of-my-ass' thoughts over., haha.
----------------------------
90+ hours in and i still need to finish the Phantom Ox cart quest, again. (had to reset to a inn save after screwing up part of my sphinx questline. *sobs*)
Still have yet to unlock Mystic Archer... not sure where that is, i thought i'd trip over it by now, but haven't yet, and i don't want to read/listening to another video guide....
Took a screenshot i really like earlier this morning.
And made a really dumb video about transportation.
Fishing on Gilgamesh since 2013 Fishing on Bronzebeard since 2005 Fishing in RL since 1992 Born with a fishing rod in my hand in 1979
I am not disputing the overall game wether it's good or bad. But common people, how many times do you gotta get burned until you realize you've been taken advantage of?
As an outsider watching both sides, I read that most who have played the game are thoroughly enjoying it and got the value out of whatever they paid for it. I am wondering who got burnt and is taken advantage of.
I think some of the things they said and did burned people. One they said the fast travel system was a design decision and then they sold access it to it. Two the charging for changing the looks of your one and only character seems absurd. Three they really glossed over or didn't make well known that these things would be in the game. When you release a bunch of copies to game review sites and leave out what some people might considered a deal breaker is shady there is no other way to explain it then being on purpose.
All that being said it is a good game and other than the looks token I think everything they sell can be avoided easily and they do not force or even mention the micro transactions once in the game. But if you screw up how dude looks or how tall he is at first it was pretty complex to fix that easily now with starting a new game it is a lot easier.

----------------------------
DDO didn't fail "horribly"; it ran for 4 years. That's more than most modern MMORPGs.
The initial DD issues came from "gamer" idjits that don't understand that games = different. It had some parallels to Skyrim but it was functionally far from it. Even then, DD had enough success for the team to be allowed to make a COMPLETE version with Dark Arisen.
Gaming history has shown us how difficult that opportunity is, because generally a game's failure is the nail on the coffin for that IP.
DD and the eventual complete DDDA sold well.
If it didn't sell well, then why did they even try to make an MMO out of it? What kind of an idiot would make an MMO out of a failed IP and run it for 4 whole years?
DDO couldn't continue for various reasons, and the main draw was that, like DD, how could they make more money? What could they actually sell? What content could they keep providing? Dragon's Dogma simply doesn't work as a live-service; it's a game that needs to end. That's the point of it's title. TO END THE DRAGON'S DOGMA.
And they didn't "go hard" at all with DLC. The only real hostage is a portcrystal that would've made initial travel and exploration much easier. It still costs 10k a pop per Ferrystone, 9K at a discount.
Each DLC also has very little and is simply has no value on it's own. Everything is a one-time deal, including the Portcrystal, which can be gifted. Someone done with the game and calling it quits? They can host a giveaway and give random people Portcrystals. Others can do the same by simply rushing to the Sphinx and duplicating it, then rushing to more NG+ cycles.
Content creators being a part of the game is also a part of the publisher's choices, generally, not the development team. In this case, Capcom chose to try expanding their reach by doing generic modern internet things, while the Dev team would accommodate that.
It's not very different from Kingdom Hearts 3's final battle and the whole 100-users and names thing, even if that had no reason lore-wise and was utter nonsensical BS. (The end of the phone game is everyone=Xehanort, and that's the fate of your phone game character.)
The DLC is still nothing compared to Monster Hunter, and has nothing exclusive outside the $2.99 BGM/SFX pack.
The lack of a New Game option might've been part of leftovers from a trouble developmental process, too. The game's fun and great, but there are clearly areas that are lacking. Battahl, notably, has no real story significance or self-contained kingdom plotline, while Disa's crap does get resolved, it's only in the form of an ending video rather than anything actually solid, nor does it explain the lead up to the new king.
I am not disputing the overall game wether it's good or bad. But common people, how many times do you gotta get burned until you realize you've been taken advantage of?

That's the problem, it's misinformation constantly being passed around because of pissy brats not liking a shiny new thing.
Fast Travel has no paid access. You mean the single Portcrystal that's tied to a Ferrystone? Someone can easily pay the $2.99 for a single crystal AND give that one away if they were inclined to. It's not a premium item, it's an actual item IN the game. All these purchase options are items that exist within the game. Wakestones? People who don't suck or reload instead of reviving would have plenty. Gift Dragongazes and let people get their own, or gift shards to other players.
Anything can build a community, and that community can easily bypass any and all purchases.
The misinformation still continues; they sold PAWN character editing for 500RC. The ONLY REAL information is that it was limited to 2 edits. The "DLC" puts that total to 3. So, what? Now you've only got 3. They decided to make the number 99, even though it's easier to just NG+ than use 500RC. Plus, RC is infinitely farmable. Character editing costs gold, which is also infinitely farmable.
Point three? "DELUXE EDITION" ALWAYS CONTAINS INFORMATION. They didn't hide it; people were just too stupid to click on the product page for the DELUXE EDITION and the DLC that the DELUXE EDITION comes with.
EVERY SINGLE DELUXE EDITION OF A GAME COMES WITH "DLC" PACKS. EVERY.
With that very fact, every game would, and should, be expected to have some form of "DLC" packs.
What would a reviewer do? Buy things off the PSN/ETC? There's the other fact, these DLCs go through a process to be approved on digital storefronts. A review copy shouldn't be accessing such things, by logic. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Steam, etc.; they allow these things without issues. They're no different than Apple or Google. Everything is part of an ecosystem. That ecosystem is usually unmoderated.
Yet none of these people seem to know what 'Dead or Alive' is, or what the 'Tales of' series is.
For me already the best Singleplayer RPG 2024, but tbh...I probably wont buy another one, because I dont like the "other RPGs" (Witcher, BG, CP, FF etc). To dry, to pathetic.
Imho well deserved and I hope for an Addon asap or maybe a "Definitive Edition" of the first one.
From a gamer stand point, it doesn't matter how many units were sold. It just shows how many suckers there were, which is sad.

The thing is that for me these two views are not incompatible; it is a great game, but for those of us who care more about playing a smooth running game than having the "premium" experience of playing as early as possible the best thing to do is wait before we buy.
There was an effort to boycott Hogwarts Legacy and that was one of the best selling games of last year.
And now, Dragons Dogma 2 is off to great start.
If I was making a game I would purposely create a nonsense controversy to get idiots to boycott it then laugh all the way to the bank.
Hogwarts Legacy's drama was all about JK Rowling and her views on sexuality, not that I agree with her but she should be able to express her opinion without calls for a boycott in my opinion, hell even most of the child actors she made famous, disowned her on social media over it.
DD2 the drama is all about the game and (mis)conceptions regarding what you can and cannot do without spending RL money on virtual coins.
Whilst they are not connected, you have highlighted the problem, people call to boycott, rather than discuss and agree to disagree (welcome to the internet!!!!).
Capcom have already released a patch which fixes one of the issues highlighted (unable to start a new game)
Seems like gamers mostly ignore the drama and buy what they want to buy, both are great games and worth the money in my opinion.

Are you saying that the gaming industry and gamers are too concerned about what other people (not necessarily gamers) are saying about their games? Noes!
