"Dan Govier is currently the sole developer of Starship Simulator, having been an avid fan of science fiction, space exploration, and space sims since first picking up the original Elite on his parents' Commodore 64 in the 1980s."
Huge red flag based on the proposed scope. That said, there is a free demo available so... at least folks can take a peek and see what really exists which is more than most Kickstarters offer.

Given the track record of other solo developers building full on MMOs, let's just say I'm dubious. I mean CIG can't get a product out the door with 100 developers and hundreds of millions of dollars and this guy is going to swoop in and do it solo... Yeah. Granted there's a lot more going on at CIG. They could have built and released probably two games by now if they knew how to rein in Chris Roberts.
Anyway, point is if this guy is going to finish the project solo I doubt he or I will live long enough to see it to completion, and I'm not super old.
Basically he just scored a huge payday to quit his day job and do hobbyist programming until he retires. Good for him but I doubt this thing will ever release.
I would be cautious here, if they don't even have a team just one guy you know this could be going no where. Still, happy to take bets it launches before Star Citizen.
I know right? By himself, with such an insignificant amount of money he might be able to deliver a decent board game, maybe.
But a full featured space sim MMO with VR? C'mon people, wake up! These "news" stories should be delivered with a heavy undertone of sardonic disbelief and perhaps a few meme's like

All that aside, I've been burned two too many times with ambitious Kickstarters. I would bet a bunch of these people donating have been burned more times than that lol.
VR people will spend money on new games, especially ones that boast huge worlds. It is, after all, what VR does best.
That said, VR already has No Mans Sky, Star Trek Bridge Crew, Elite Dangerous and From Other Suns as starship simulators, and they are pretty good. It will be an uphill climb. I think his only hope is to have an idea good enough to get picked up by a larger developer... hopefully a good one.

Scopeware: A game where the scope is too big relative to what is capable of the creator(s) in a reasonable timeframe.
