What prompted this? Steamers complaining? Are they getting harassed?

I'm not seeing anything about removing yourself from a blacklisted person's friendlist though.....Never understood why that was a thing to begin with....

Yeeeaaahh the mutual friends list issue is... well, an issue. I think they justified it with, "It'll be a problem if someone sees you removed them," but given the way the game's backup systems work I suspect it's just bad infrastructure. Shame.

I'm personally glad for the new changes, though. Just three days ago, someone walked up to me and a friend and pretended they were new, but given how it went, we're confidently 50/50 on it being either "old friend who never logs onto Discord" or "roleplayer I had to block three years ago after he vaguely threatened me" and that's a game I hate playing.

Yeah...lets just all block the things that make us mildly uncomfortable and pretend they don't exist. Dealing with the trolls used to be part of the fun/experience in MMOs.

It's a japanese-first game, keep in mind the type of harassments and issues people have with online problems is VERY different over there.

I mean, yes. Why should you have to deal with people who you don't want to? It is a video game. Let people enjoy it the way they want to and quit acting like it should be acceptable that people deal with horrible people.

Great, now I can get a false sense of empowerment by blacklisting everyone who votes Trump or claims gender is a biological thing. Or says something mildly flirtatious, heavens forbid.

As a society we need to learn to how deal with people not avoid or ban them. But we also need ways of cutting of communication with people who you can't deal with. It is a conundrum where we have to try to take a middle road.

Agreed. Muting...is probably fine, but altogether removing their character model from existence is a bit much.

I can think of a number of reasons why it could be necessary though.

Like this situation that occurred sometime last year by a user who goes by the name online: 'Weeb Police'

reddit post name: Someone Created Multiple Roegadyns to Block the Ledge the Lalas Hang Out at In Sargatanas link:https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/ye6bfl/someone_created_multiple_roegadyns_to_block_the/ image

    https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/469475-Square-Enix-please-help.-The-roegadyn-griefing-on-Sargatanas-must-be-dealt-with

Granted this is probably the least offensive type of harassment, as it's more annoying and goofy then explicit and malicious.

Now imagine having a system where you could block gold bot spam, the thing most players dislike, and also the associated accounts player model?

There shouldn't have to be a double-standard for personal enjoyment, so this system is going to be beneficial in the long run.

Also, sorry about my sloppy html.

Society has plenty of good ways to deal with horrible people, lawsuits, jail time, fisticuffs, and of course the well worn practice of shunning and excluding those who misbehave.

Looks like game devs are catching up on the idea of isolating and ghosting those undesirables who warrant such treatment.

Too bad we can't give such people a good ole Dinozzo head slap.

That Roe blocking also happened a few times at popular RP spots - everyone is fairly sure it's one shitty person doing it over and over who's also famous for being verbally harassing, using alts, and taking it out of game too. The FFXIV report system is deeply famously inadequate so this new blacklist system has been pretty celebrated by players.

If you have someone this bad he needs to be banned from the game, not blacklisted.

I agree, but only because the head slap isn't a practical option.

Either that or the Airplane "shake" which includes a good face slap. (Notice the guy in line with the crescent wrench in hand)

    :)

Oh yeah, I'm sure half of Crystal has reported them, but I think they already got snagged once or twice, so now the person gets around every protocol to ensure it's not linked to their main. Using alt service accounts and invoking plausible deniability, going onto Twitter and Discord, spamming old logs that nobody would keep and blocking out their name for that deniability... It's a whole deliberate thing.

I'm sure VPNs are either the next step or already invoked.

But whatever, it's so much effort to do as much as they do that everyone just thinks they're a funny little clown now. [shrug]

I think these features are fine; but there needs to be consequences for bad behavior. That is of course a grey area; but I think we could agree what deserves an immediate ban, and what doesn't.
