You're going to have to help me understand what you mean by this statement. "another major graphics upgrade that requires a GeForce RTX 4090 to play" implies they already released a major graphics upgrade that requires an RTX 4090. I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Matter of fact I'm pretty sure I could fire it up on my RTX 2080 and it would play just fine. Also, considering how many people actually own an RTX 4090 (tiny percentage), such an update its unlikely to happen any time in the next decade. Part of WoW's success is the fact you can run it on a potato. I rather doubt they're going to suddenly shift directions and require an $1800 video card plus a machine to support it.
Alright, so I have to apologize. That's one of my many 'waste basket comments' that just kind of come out when there is a much longer and more complicated stream of thought I'm having, and I don't have any quicker way of conveying what I want to say because it's probably really early in the morning at the time.
Me and WoW have a bit of a love/hate relationship, and while I have very fond memories of my experiences, I was kind of spoiled by South Korean, Japanese, and Chinese video game art design very early on before WoW even came out, so going from FF11 and Lineage II to World of Warcraft was... jarring for me, but I still fell in love with WoW like most people did.
But I kept that sort of scrutiny of the game's art design like I was wearing a backback the whole time playing WoW, and when Legion was announced and that they were going to do a major art overhaul, I was really excited, and when I saw what they came up with and what the hardware requirements looked like in contrast to what the game was going to look like, in my mind, it just didn't add up.
Back then, though, I wasn't really thinking about just how old the engine was and that this was probably the best the developers could do with the resources they had to work with, but I always wondered what the game could have looked like if they were really given the resources they needed to truly overhaul the whole game from the ground up, instead of layering art assets on top of each other and then layering additional elements on top of that to make things look as good or as modern as they could.
Most of my personal gripes with the art design are in the details on a lot of the armor sets and environments, especially trees, of course, started looking better as they became more stylized in expansions like Mist of Pandaria.
So in the comment about the RTX 4090, it's my brain not functioning properly. Brain, please tell them you are sorry.
Brain: Sorry guys.
That doesn't change how I feel about Warcraft's visual art design. It's not about the style, but the details, and the art just lacks details. I hope they can take advantage of whatever resources they have now that newer tools are available. Being owned by Microsoft now, I am hoping they could somehow make use of the Azure Cloud Stack and perhaps help offload some of the overhead hardware requirements and expand what the game can actually render without players feeling it so much on their physical computers.
