I played pokemon go for 8 years.  You do the same crap every day yet I keep playing.

Maybe I am the target audience.

People write a lot on how good games were back in the days, but the fact is everyone just quit.  They come up with all the excuse why they quit.  But anyway they just quit.

So why does runescape keep going and every other old games just die?

And they never cease to wax poetically through the rosiest of rose colored glasses about how great those old games were as well, and yet, they still quit

This is why if anyone tells the best game that was ever made, is a game they of their own volition stopped playing, Eh, I'm not investing in their insight for anything going forward.

and the more they praise the game and the longer it's been since they played, the less I value their input.

You do understand that in most cases these games change and change significantly?

Though, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, the only reason I quit Lineage 2 was that to remain competitive I would have had to play even more than the massive amount of time I was putting in.

6 hours on weekends and about 8 Saturday and Sunday.

Hell Lineage 2 changed drastically the second it went F2P, otherwise I would still be playing to this day. I don't want to use whatever built in bot they have in every server including the classic servers.

Absolutely. I played from prelude through chronicle 5. I logged into it a year or so ago and my reaction was a big WTF!

I should correct my statement in that I was playing 6 hours on weekdays.

If I needed to put in half that to be "Competitive" in an MMO I'd fucking quit, but I also would not be saying it's the best MMO ever made either

If you felt it WAS before it changed, then why not say so? And why would anyone else proclaim that you aren't worth hearing?
I used to be not so good looking, but now I'm downright ugly as sin. Does that change that I once was "not so good looking"?

Realizing that I haven't seriously played EVE in over 7 years now I rarely advise anyone to try it as I don't really know what it plays like these days.

Games definitely do change from the day they launch and usually move away from the sweet spot when I enjoyed them the most, hence I rarely return once done.

I guess I avoid EVE figuring it has to be too different to really return.  Probably only would do so if real life friends wanted to give it ago, which is highly unlikely as most EVE players would confirm.

Well, to give it some context, I hadn’t played many video games at that point and had discovered a game that was not only a game but a world. It was all about player relationships.

I was having a blast so of course wanted to be a part of it all. Playing that much allowed me to be competitive as well, so that was a huge plus.

I remember coming from Lord of the Rings Online and logging into Lineage 2 for a massive siege. The excitement as clans gathered was amazing. I’ve never experienced that since as all the rest of the MMORPG’s felt like, well “games.”

In any case I couldn’t sustain it and just lost interest.

Still, best online gaming experience I’ve ever had.

Also it was an amazing game. “Best ever” is too subjective. I would say that that for the time I played it, it was the best for me.

Because MMORPGS never got any better after 2004.

Been a long, slow, disappointing downhill slide the past 20 years or so which is why threads like this have been going strong on forums, reddit and this site near forever.

I think when someone says a game was "the best" or "amazing", probably what they mean is at the time the game did something truly wonderful and unique.  The game represented a leap forward.

The leap forward is taken for granted now, but every game that utilizes the innovation is a testament to the original game's greatness.

So, I'm wondering why games don't do this anymore.
I cannot remember the last time I was surprised.

Usually, I'm lucky to be relieved.

I left about 4ish years ago after 14 years and more than 25,000 hours...what you may miss about that game no longer exists like it once did. Everything has changed....they have sold-out to PA and now it's a straight wallet milkfest. Sad really, eve was a great game for a long time.

Sadly the day one DLC and constant expansions you just have to have to play are killing it. Broken games and broken promises have lead us here. Until people stop buying the trash that's being published the people who make the real changes won't care or see any reason to stop. At this point I genuinely feel bad for the devs at any studio, most of them have no say in what's going on with the game ultimately.

Given that there are very few mmorpg's to discuss, I'm all for continuing discussions for the sake of insight and camaraderie.

Otherwise there's very little to talk about. ;)

I just look at Ashes and fail to get excited, I cannot work out what they're making. When I cannot work out a game just by looking at it, the game is almost always bad. Gameplay wise I get it, they're doing nothing new which is also worrying.... But I cannot see any inspiration in the game and the world looks dull and yeah... I'm going to give it a miss.

Devs know what their doing. They made a game and for a certain group of people and a good game. The next one after is going to be for a broader audience that your grandma can play. Which just ends up annoying everyone. So, only small indie people making their first game are going to have a chance at being a good game. It's possible.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

When gankers get excited about a game; I get worried.

To me that means either the gankers will reduce it to a wasteland or the developers have oversold the ganking feature.  On one hand the PvE crowd will be furious, on the other hand the gankers will be furious.
