Well perhaps that's because most Indy MMO projects are at best sophomoric efforts from teams that have zero experience in building MMO back ends which are by far the most complicated part. The other problem is people think way too highly of their little niche ideas assuming the only reason more games like theirs don't exist is because no one else thought of building it. It's what I call "smartest guy in the room syndrome". They don't bother to think that not just one or two but scores of studios have already considered what they want to build and have discarded the idea as nonviable. They insist on finding out the hard way, and the vast majority do exactly that.
The problem for Genfanad was they created a game and kickstarter based on an old school turn based RPG. Then mid development, after the kickstarter mind you, they decided to change the game to a trading card game and deck builder game. All the people who liked and bought into (literally) the classic turn based rpg game, got royally screwed by this company after they got customers money and turned it into a game no one who supported they wanted and thats the TCG. They collapsed and burned after that. Lesson of this story, make what you say you're going to make especially after taking money for it, don't tell people one thing and then do another and then be surprised when they're not happy.

While you are most likely correct about the level experience and knowledge with regards to indie developers, I applaud their desire to make something they want and are passionate about.
There are a lot of people lambasting AAA developers for making cookie cutter games or just following trends. It probably has more to do with the money people wanting a return.
I don’t believe that most indie developers think their games aren’t being made because no one thought of it.
They want to make awesome games that they want to play. Sadly they usually don’t have the money or experience to be successful.
