Star Wars: Galaxies might be shut down officially, but the MMO has been kept alive for years through emulated servers. We talked to one to talk about the future of the MMO - and whether Disney should give a Star Wars MMO another try.

i think this Title is misleading unless i missed something here .......... where does Disney (or any AAA company) show interest in bringing back SWG's ??? and doesn't Legends have more numbers than Restoration

There are two ways to read the title. “Is the game back with Disney” or could the game’s future be back with Disney”

I thought the former but after reading the first part of the article it seems it’s the latter.

I think they're theorycrafting that "1000" players is enough to show Disney that there is interest. Laughable and clickbait.

I am fully in favour of an SWG 2.0.

However, I'm not certain that there is a studio out there capable of doing it justice. Certainly Disney wouldn't be able to handle such a project! There is no "sandbox template" that a studio could follow, not in the same way they can follow a themepark template.

And let's not forget, SWG was deeply flawed. It was a great social experiment, with some amazing ideas. But those ideas were never given a chance to evolve into something more, something lasting. What game designer has the capability to take those original ideas and build upon them?

I loved the game back in 2003, but I do not want to go back, I played it to death back then and want something new today.

Or to take it a step farther, can they create a game that will speak to modern audience but still entice Star Wars Galaxies fans?

In some ways they are going to be "damned if you do, damned if you don't."

Original Star Wars galaxies might be split between the "I am willing to play an old school Star Wars Galaxies game" and "I'm willing to play a Star Wars Galaxies game but it can't take the same amount of time and effort and/or no grind at all."

Then you have modern audiences who have never played Star Wars Galaxies and they might not want to play a game that is a nod to a more old school type of game.

Mark my words, if someone were to make a Star Wars Galaxies SOMEONE would complain.

I don't think we'll ever see Galaxies officially come back. Disney looks for returns harder than any other corporation out there and Galaxies in 2024 has absolutely no promise of that.

I agree, total click bait. In terms of numbers I think Legends has around 6000 on a monthly average and even SWGEmu site even shows they've had 1400 accounts the past month. Plus legends and SWGEmu supports multiple OS's like Linux (with player guides on how to get it working on the Steam Deck) where as Restorations doesn't.

Anything but Disney, SWG Restoration are better off on their own.

So the title wants to know if Disney has any interest with SWG in general.

That's a pretty large trail of breadcrumbs to get to the same place most people are going to find themselves: "No" , or: "Heeeeeeelllll no"

In all seriousness, SWG seems to be doing just fine with the support it's already receiving, so let's not give disney any bright ideas so they can go and ruin something else.

The restoration server is awful. Literally any other server is better. Swg Legends is the most fun right now.

I love SWTOR, but saying it has been consistently updated is a bit of a stretch.

Yes, we get new content. Once or twice a year we get maybe 1-2 hours of story content and what some would consider a "dungeon."

The game is at the cusp of maintenance mode with it being moved to Broadsword.

Disney is struggling a little bit right now. Iger just faced an investor challenge, and squeaked by. Florida has been extremely hostile in what was a once cozy relationship. Right now, Disney wants to play it safe and take no dangerous risks, in my opinion, while they get the mouse back on track.

Now take SWG. It's a long gone vision of what Star Wars will never be that is the opposite what what Disney wants to do with the franchise. They're trying to shake the skeletons of the past (things like SWG and the Extended Universe) and reshape the IP to fit their vision for the future, not bring them back to life.

The emulator community for SWG has been extraordinarily supportive and vibrant. However, the likelihood of Disney pursuing the development of a sequel to SWG or introducing a new MMORPG that mirrors the pre-New Game Enhancement mechanics remains slim. In the current climate of the Western gaming market, the launch of a new MMORPG is often met with intense scrutiny and can become a maelstrom of animosity directed at developers. Given these conditions, I share the sentiment that such an endeavor may not be justifiable. Simply put, it is not worth it.

why would disney be interested in bringing back SWG? when the game was live it went from a decent starting population to dead in less then 3 months, then they did the NGE a handfull of people came back but not many..emus having 1k players isnt enough cash to even get a sneeze outta a corp the size of disney, finally 99 out of 100 people who claimed to have played swg and how great it was-didnt play it

    So a few things.
    1. While swg did drop in population for cu and then nge it wasn't dead.
    2. The drop in pop was not over 3 months it was overnight.
    3. Starting pop was huge like every mmo good or bad.
    4. I did play and I enjoyed it until they announced the shut down.

I played pre-cu, cu and nge. I still miss it and if we had emu servers that were not run by corrupt or power hungry administrators I would still be playing. To this day it is still the best crafting and harvesting system I have ever seen. Same goes for the housing and flexibility of play style.

Hate all you like it's true.

    ???

Seems a bit strong.  I'll grant you my son and I had a bit of a kersuffle with what I'm guessing was a brand new mod on the Legends server, but one of the senior guys stepped in and straightened the guy out and helped us.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

wrong I was there in beta and my discription is reality and today everybody claims they played it...they didnt or there would have been no need for them to change the game to draw players in
