I've sort of gave up on SC long ago since it has taken so long & has gotten so pricey, but these sneak peeks with the free "rentals" I think are a good way of introducing potential new players. It allows us to get our feet wet if we want without a hefty investment.
Very mixed first day. On one hand I think it played well and looked great. At least on New Babbage. When we moved to Area 18 it got laggy for us. But it was opening day so I give that a pass.
On the other hand…. Seems to be totally missing QOL stuff. Travel between planets took a long time. Could not figure out how to change my home residence. Even after going to the med center and selecting to make the new area my Rez spot, somehow after I logged out on the new station, when I logged back in I was back in my starting bed. Grouping in general seemed hard as we were in different instances. Was told to log to main menu (which is why it annoyed me to login back where I started).
Back to the first hand… once we were in game friends and in a party, when we logged in we were in the same instance. Also, the Constellation ships look awesome. Would love to try them with a group… but now for the dagger through the heart.
One of my group can’t play. He tried to install all night but kept getting error 3001. He fully uninstalled. He followed the guide on that error. But so far no luck. If he can’t play… our journey ends tonight.

I will say this, it is the best shape it has ever been in ever. I actually got good frames and had a couple dog fights that didn't lag at all, but saying that it needs a ton of more work. Like multiple cargo ship tonnage.

Our journey ends. Still hoping to get 1-2 people and try the Constellation but sadly the rest will have to wait. Hopefully they come up with a fix someday

Come on back...3.23.1 is live and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well the game runs and the new stuff implemented in the PU.

Well of course it takes time to travel across the galaxy, it's a sim. You were told while choosing a home that you wouldn't be able to choose another(at least until the next big wipe/patch). If your friend doesn't have to hardware or the patience to play SC, they were never going to last in the Verse anyway unfortunately.

Sure. So because it's a "sim" we should log out to the login screen in order to add a friend? Because it's a "sim" we should both be standing in the exact same game area and not see each other because we are in different "instances".
I gave it a fair shake. It had ups and it had downs. It had some pats that excited me. But having one member not even be able to play was a bridge too far. At least for now.
Please don't be "that guy".

I get the same error every time I reinstall the game. It's a disk sector error (win11) which can be resolved with this command REG
ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stornvme\Parameters\Device"
/v "ForcedPhysicalSectorSizeInBytes" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "* 4095" /f
or
if tried and didnt work have your friend install the game on another PC then just transfer the whole game installation folder over to his PC.
While they need to get a better installer this is a his PC problem.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Maybe yes. Maybe no. I don't honestly know "who's problem" it is. But at the end of the day, it's going to prevent us from exploring for the rest of the Fly Free event.
But none of them other than ME paid for the game, so they aren't owed anything by the company. I was just hoping to actually give it a shot after all this time.
Maybe in another year...
But I am going to try and run a mission in a Constellation with 1 other new person tonight. That should be fun.

Worked for some people and not for others just like some people say launching the launcher in admin cleared the error and others say it didn't for them. It's something on his PC interfering with the game installation itself.
If he can just copy the game installation folder from another PC that it is working he can then just paste that to his PC and it should work.
I have 3 PC at the house and I sometimes have issues like this where the simplest solution is to copy paste the whole game folder from one PC to the one having installation issues.

OK.. we completed our first mission with the Hercules. It was clearing a mining mission. Hilarity ensued as I took the co-pilots seat and my friend sat in the Pilots chair.
I opened comms and requested permission to depart. Granted.
My friend so carefully tried to guide the ship up and out of the hangar, but we hit the roof as it appeared the doors did not open.
Tried spinning the ship (banging it around) to see if maybe we were supposed to depart from another direction.. all the while saying "Good thing it's a rental"
I try radioing the controller again and get told a sarcastic "You already have permission"...
After about 10 minutes, my friend tries to radio, and gets permission, and we hear the locks disengaging... Success!!! Looks like only the Pilot's permission matters.. kind of strange.
After clipping the doors on the way out and spinning a bit "Good thing its just a rental"... we straighten out. I grab a mission to clear out a mining area. Share it.. and off we go.
Once we get to the zone, it seems we are supposed to find and destroy some sentry. We zoom around a bit and don't see anything other than some small probe object that appears to be friendly. But we fool around with ship systems. Find out you have to click a little button to actually power the guns. Shoot a bit... search... after 10 minutes decide to go back to the "friendly" probe. Sure enough, hit it a few times, it explodes, and we get mission complete and 5k cash.
On the trip back home I decide to go open the back hatch... seems ok.. Im standing there... then I look at myself and I have no helmet on... and just as I see that I get sucked out of the ship and start dying in the vacuum of space. Get my helmet on, and 50% health. OK... could be worse. So my friend is now 6GM away... but he cant lock onto me to use the jump drive or whatever its called. And going in manual mode would take a million years. So I log out to menu... and back in...and Im safe and sound on my bed at Area18. Friend couldn't figure out how to find the port to land on the planet so just kamikazed into a building. "Good thing it's just a rental!"
We had some fun. If our friend could play we'd probably give it more time, but without that we will have to wait and try again at some point.
Game is rough, but exists. Actually, seems like they still need to "gamify" it some, but the engine works and the foundation is there. Will have to see how they build on it.

"Actually, seems like they still need to "gamify" it some, but the engine works and the foundation is there."
This was a concern of mine years back when I watched a development video of theirs. They are creating gameplay systems, but the systems need to be connected up (and doing that well is not easy) or you won't even have a fully fledged sim. This leads into the question of how much of a game as opposed to a sim will it be? The fact they intend to release a second title which is more game like leads me to think this will be firmly on the sim end of the spectrum.

Generally the game having part of its community being sim based, they're not really into gamification of the game into more linear paths.
The sandbox sim makes it into some sort of game like say truck simulator or microsoft flight sim, but that is generally not appealing to many others that will get into the game and just be "what do I do?", as it will not tell you to go anywhere or do anything.
The 3.23 patch is both popular and unpopular depending on who you ask, the more sim players got kinda triggered because a simplication on the space flight & combat that does open the game to more players, makes it feel more arcade to them.
Either either some group is going to be unhappy, but I think the game is going on a direction where it keeps sandbox but cuts back on sim elements, and will stand its ground on the PvP aspects to drive economic competition, which feels to me is part of them focusing base building mechanics too.

Other possibilities,
Why not, it's just a rental?
WTF, should have bought the insurance on this rental.
The possibilities are endless.
