"Hitting $703 million and counting can’t hurt that endeavor"
I'd actually take a different view. I think the massive money influx was a bad thing. Most particularly because the money is raised by selling various ships. This incentivizes the development of new ships so they can be sold. They are going to naturally follow the money...
That said, I did give the game a look during the Fly Free event. It's an actual game. It is visually very appealing. It has a lot of bugs. It needs a lot more content such as many, many more plants and systems. It also needs more focus on user experience. For example, I think the steps to drink are something like: Press a button to remove your helmet. Open inventory. Select an item to drink. Click it to put it in your hand. Press another button to drink. Length of holding button determines a sip or finishing the whole drink. Discard empty drink. put helmet back on. It's just tedium. That's not a game killer, but just an example of the kind of stuff that needs a few user experience passes. Another is grouping and getting into the same "instance".

Well, I think they've made no bones about building a sim versus a game. They definitely error on the sim side versus the fun side. While they could just have a generic 'use' button that automates all the steps of drinking, that would take away from the sim aspect, so you get the tedium. Some people love it, some hate it. I can only imagine what the ass wiping minigame is going to be like.
Speaking of ass wiping, I would say don't hold your breath on an investigation. I mean we went down the whole legal thing between the lawsuit with Crytek and also the "Internet Warlord" Derek Smart and all his shenanigans. If an indictment was going to get shaken out with regard to their funding it would have happened by now, and I promise their legal team has their ducks in a row at this point having gone through one legal merry-go-round already.
Like Slapshot mentioned above, the primary concern is they have no real incentive to release the game. One could argue that actually they would take a significant pay cut by releasing the game because then there would be no more $450 ships to sell, just $50 box copies of the game. The era of whales would be over. I don't think they're in any hurry to wrap the gravy train up.
I like the sim aspect of the game HOWEVER I feel they take it too far on some stuff. For example drinking water should nto be a friggin chore and a simple use button would suffice without hurting the "sim aspect" of the game.
Some tedious stuff does not need to be hardcore sim like that as long as they keep the sim aspect on flying and fighting and such things, no one will really give a rats arse they can drink water with one click instead of needing several....this would just be a QoL thing.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Funding and player increase year after year, Rinse & Repeat. [...]
I believe that's the point being made. Lots of rinsing and repeating, yet no releasing. And that lack of incentive to release may well be tied to your comment about those who have trouble drinking water in the game. It's easy to dismiss complaints and criticisms of an unreleased game but not so much when it's released. So yeah, they (and plenty of others) will gladly take donations so long as the donors exist. It's my primary issue with crowdfunding game development this way. Make people investors instead of donors and then you have my attention.
Also, it's 2024. I'm not sure anyone cynical of a game that was due to release in 2014 and yet is still in development a decade later while raking in "donations" like a charity is the idiot here. That label better applies to the ones who chased the goalposts off the edge of a cliff. (Or the ones who keep putting cash in the donation jar each time it comes around, but who am I to judge?)
I genuinely wonder if there is a time frame or dollar amount when even the devoted fanbase starts to have doubts. If not after 12+ years and $700m later then when?
Gotta give it to them, they've got a skill. Not as a developer, but as a money making machine. I don't think you can disagree that raising money is their top ability.

Eh, I mean they're profitable for sure. No denying that, but other companies do much better. It's taken almost 12 years to hit $700 million. Helldivers 2 has sold 8 million copies or earned $320 million in 3 months, just as an example. 12 years from now we'll be on Helldivers 5 and the franchise will likely be a multi-billion dollar IP at that rate.

Maybe because some gamers have no problem in playing games while they develop and give developers time to make a more fleshed out game instead of being rushed to release to make a buck for shareholders...
One is not an idiot for not wanting to play X or Y or Z game. Be it early access, crowdfunded or gold release.
They are idiots when they can't aknowledge that gamers can enjoy different games. That includes games at different stage of production, with different features, requirements and ambition.
Star Citizen, despite being in Alpha is already miles better than anything else of it's genre in the market.
Which is why it keeps growing and rustling haters jimmies.
That's one of the best things of crowdfunding and if one has problem with waiting for games or playing alpha builds in general that's ok, if it's not for you it's not for you, just like every other game or product.
In 50 years from now, they will debate as to how did they raised 1 billion + dollars and never finished the game.
PS: In before : ..but but, is not a scam. There is a game..... Yes there is a game , but in pyramid scheme for exemple, there is also cash hand over and cash outs .. until a point.
Point is, having a ..skeleton of a product, doesn't justify the massive amount of $ "invested" already. So ..it's a scam. Deal with it.

Another comparison: Fortnite made $4.4 BILLION in one year, 2022.
At this point, the more SC brings in in pledges, the worse the developers look. After 12 years, they've raised $700 million and still have nothing worthy of even a beta. They don't even have a roadmap for release, and it's now considered rude by the backers to even ask if and when the game might actually release.
The more they raise, the worse they look at this point.

But for how long have you enjoyed playing Fortnite?
For what is soon to be the most expensive video game ever developed, its not very impressive.
Studios with less money, less time and less people have made games that are truly fun and drag you deep into their world.
This game with all it's time and work does none of those things. It's soulless and that's the worst thing any game can be.
Ok...name other space sims that allow you to walk around your ship/space stations/planets in a single game world, has fps and minigame mechanics, no load screens in that game and all the other MMO game mechanics that SC brings?

Their funding needs to be investigated, no way is that legit.
LOL.... no need of investigation. 1000 + external consultants hired to create fauna and others assets, over +10 years. Simple math does prove cash is used to create a game while paying employees. A game in Alpha everyone can play for free several weeks per year, SQ42 (solo game) in polish phase. Meanwhile Publishers gather hundred's Billions $ over the same time to deliver copy-paste game we have seen many times.... Last but not least, only 45$ is required to get a starter package, everything else is available through in game Credits (except some very big ships)... A true drama really /s

You really think a game that doesn't even support HOTAS can be considered a space sim , then again you spent money on Diablo 4 lul
