It seems like they still haven't figured out what kind of game NW is supposed to be. Wasn't it originally designed as a survival game, and then was morphed into an MMO? And now on to an ARPG.

Maybe they felt a change would stimulate new sales....I doubt many were buying New World at this point so they might as well try to re-brand it.

It appears it will be the same game for PC players, just with more players via crossplay. Although i imagine the current PC servers will die as they will most likely be transfer locked so most of them will make a new character on a new server. Pure speculation though as that is all we have.

New World has always been an ARPG: it's a roleplaying game with action combat.

So, the only difference is whether they are reducing the size of the multiplayer component. This is an aspect of the game that the engine has always struggled to handle, and they've already has to downgrade / restrict some features in the past because of this.

Now that they are adding layering to the game, it would make sense to drop the "MMO" label if the game is no longer going to be massively multiplayer.

Does anyone know the player cap on the current game? I remember them having to reduce some sort of PvP feature ages ago (city sieges?) down to 50 people, but I've no idea what the rest of the game can support.

No, an ARPG would not have all the bells and whistle MMO elements that NW has. We have seen a lot of criticism about individual gameplay elements and how all those elements hold together. But NW has them.

Is New World built around action combat? Yes

Is New World a roleplaying game? Yes

    Therefore it's an ARPG.

Does New World support 250+ players? I don't know, but if it does, it's an MMO. If not, then just regular multiplayer.

Other features (im assuming ur talking about raids, group finders, etc) have no bearing on whether it's an MMO, or whether it's an ARPG.

I felt like they did quite a few things really well.
I enjoyed the unusual lore, and the starter experience.
Everything seemed to be well polished.

For me the wheels started to come off when some of the quests had placeholders and weren't well developed - then the first dungeon was a mandatory group dungeon to progress the story - and then when I downshifted to maybe doing markets they combined auction houses (destroyed regional markets).

So they headed in one direction, then another and never really went all in on any one idea from what I could tell.

NW been suffering from many problems and going through a huge content drought. 6 months ago, AGS aknowledge the games shortcomings and promissed to listen to player feedback and rework some stuff while adding content, but said they needed time so they asked players to be patient and needed 6 months to implement all the stuff. So nothing happened in the game for 6 months while devs made several promises for june 4th as the answer to all past year player unhappyness and demands.

Instead of delivering on june 4th, they basicly announced their exit strategy into consol launch in 6 months basicly discarding and alienating all the pc gamers.

This is a console release as a coop-arpg to maximise profit with new audience, release a half assed dlc or two and shelving the game, no more content/live service.

They are basicly announcing the end of their work on the game and putting it on life support after consol release. You expect constant work and updates / expensions from an mmo. From a co-op arpg you expect no such thing. Thats the hole point of the pivot, sell it as it is to as many console players as possible and move on to the next project.

Did they change the ugly ass nonbinary gender character creation? Probably not….. they should just close the game.

Well we have got ourselves into what makes a game a MMORPG territory. No two players are going to exactly agree on that and clearly we have quite different ideas in that regard. Most games are built around "action combat" not sure that's a criteria here. Also, I think NW has way more that 250 players a "server". maybe those who have played can confirm that (another poster is talking about a 2000 player cap in another thread)?

It is a buy to play game, which is one of the reasons i have quit 3 or 4 times now. I do the existing content, get bored then go play something else. Not sure why players expect constant releases of content. Even if they were a sub game, the usual expansion cycle is 2 or 3 years. Has not even been a year since elysian wilds has it? Shame on AGS for leading players on, shame on the players for being so gullable. I have been one of their biggest critics in the past, but i think it was either a console cash grab or shut the game down. It will be the same game, just with more players via console and sharding in the starter zones only to alleviate queing and congestion. Made no difference to me really what AGS did, but i will be there Oct 15th leveling a new character while pvp flagged. Then will probably quit again after a few weeks till they release more content. That is the beauty of buy to play for me.

Between the current player counts for both New World and Lost Ark, something tells me AGS has some serious issues. Been a long time since I have seen a game like Lost Ark go from some high to so low so fast.

Server cap and player cap are different things.

Especially as "server" doesn't really mean that much, considering what we consider to be servers are generally multi-server, or often virtual-server setups.

But yes, New World had a server-cap of around 2000 when the game launched. But I've no idea what the player-cap was (or is), or what it's going to be with the new "shard" tech they are going to introduce.

I believe it was massively multiplayer (player cap over 250) at launch. I know they scaled down the PvP set pieces (city siege thing) to something like 50 players because the engine couldn't handle more. Now they're scaling down the rest of the game with layering. Will it still be massively multiplayer? I don't know. I hope so, for the sake of those that still play it.

I am with you now, you mean what population can the "servers" realistically have. Thats a fair one as designers must give a nod to low numbers when it comes to gameplay. Are there enough players to do raids etc? Same here, I hope it stays MM, just does not look that way right now.
