There really hasn't been a worthwhile MMO since 2004.

    Point 1:

No I am simply going back to the month before Albion Online was 100% free.  This way we can do a real comparison to games that cost money.

Before people could get bot accounts 100% free.

When this game cost money to play, it had very few people.  Thats the apples to apples comparision.

What you are doing is trying to compare MAU's of something like free windows solitair or minesweeper to something like full priced Baldurs Gate.

    Point 2:

When something is FREE any bot can be used.  The parent company of Albion Online has said it has a huge bot problem.  I believe them when they say that.

    300k Mau's? LOL

Is the game a massive failure?  No, its not.  But its not even close to any of the big MMO's.  It has found a niche where some whales support the game, for a bunch of free players and their bots.  Alot like Diablo Immortal has.

In case it has not been mentioned before, EQ2 just launched their Origins server, play the game how it was at release.

The best kept secret in MMORPG history… EQ2 was a better MMORPG than WoW….

It's not classic EQ2 though, it is when they started trying to copy WoW. 2004/05 is classic, but 2006 is when they started ruining it.

EQ2 needs a graphical update. It needs to at least look more like unreal engine 5 graphics. The cartoon look is getting old.

It always had the “cartoon look.”

heck, years ago the lineage 2 servers were down for a long maintenance so I did a short cartoon series where my lineage 2 character was thrust into the EverQuest world and was horrified about how everything looked.

Of course this is based on my personal taste.

If you go back even further there was Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot and Ultima Online. All killed off again by stupid patches the community didn't want and it just seems the same thing is cropping up again and again. Just stupid developers who try to please everyone and don't think of the world it affects.

Champions of Regnum came out roughly the same time as DAOC. Regnum is still going strong. Mainly thanks to a fanatic player-dev team who have  been juggling all the interests of various player groups, while  maintaining a popular version of pvp. No single player gets everything they want, but the game remains a great deal of fun for everyone, and very European in feel.

Example of pvp in the game. Regnum is the only mmo where I find pvp players talk of getting into the "flow" state:
