Legacy owners on console only get a 25% discount on the current console versions?
    Ouch.
If you bought once you should not have to pay again at all.

There comes a point where you need to call a game done and start on a sequel. In some respects this is very similar to Star Citizen. Just without $700M and counting.

I haven't been following this game; what makes Star Citizen stand out isn't really how long they have been in development, rather it is that they said they would release with all promised features in 2016, EIGHT YEARS AGO. The devs themselves have been hilariously wrong for years. Now it is considered rude to even ask if and when they will actually release.

Did the devs for this game also make promises and schedules that were stupendously wrong?

Agreed. Console and Xbox owners are getting the shaft again. I own it on Steam, so I get the free upgrade. If their Xbox version is licensed on both PC and Xbox Console for a single purchase, then I might consider buying a license on the platform. If not, then I'm not throwing more money their way anytime soon.

Studio Wildcard sort of did a similar dirty deed with Ascended. But players are left with little recourse. At least with both 7D2D and ARK: Ascended I can play how I like and host my own, and it isn't live service with multiple continual revenue streams.

Im not really finding it much different from Alpha 21 to be honest.....It looks a little different but feels like the same gameplay.

Definitely a bit different but mostly the same as A-21 with a new armor system,  the Challenge board and of course, extra bugs for added hilarity.  :)

All zombies have been jacked up a notch, much tougher to kill in the early going with sucky weapons.

Headshots appear to be much more important, along with the perks to go with them as bikers and other heavies can eat arrow or melee body shots all day with limited effect.

I'm playing it solo for now to try and get a feel for what settings I should put on our server once the stable build releases on July 25th.

I'm pretty sure you are aware of why things have gone down this way, but for the benefit of others I'll share, this from Wikipedia.

The BLUF version, The game's developers did not publish the original console version (which was a 1.x version btw) and do not have the rights to update the original port.

Took them several legal battles to get the rights to publish a new console version which once obtained they had to hire new staff to create it from scratch.

Unfortunate for owners of the original version, but their bad luck buying the game on an inferior platform which often doesn't guarantee future updates will be forthcoming, another great reason to stay true to the PC Master race. ;)

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_Days_to_Die

In April 2016, the game was announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was published by Telltale Publishing and released in June and July 2016.[3]

The most recent update for the console versions, Patch 13, was released on December 13, 2017. This patch updates the PlayStation 4 version of the game to version 1.18, and the Xbox One version of the game to version 1.0.18.0.[33]

    Telltale's Closure

    edit

On September 21, 2018, Telltale Games abruptly laid off most of its staff due to financial problems,[34][35] and on October 11, 2018, began liquidating its assets through Sherwood Partners.[36][37] A statement by The Fun Pimps on November 13, 2018, via their official online forum stated "upon hearing the news, The Fun Pimps immediately terminated its license agreement with Telltale, which only allowed publishing rights on the console ports of the 7 Days to Die game." They went on to say that this "also severed Telltale's rights to any future updates or sequels of the 7 Days to Die franchise."[38]

The Fun Pimps released a statement on October 16, 2019, stating that the developer had re-acquired the publishing rights to the game. The future of the console ports, which has not been updated since 2017, is not entirely clear. For long period of time there was no active development happening.[4] On November 2, 2022, during an interview on a YouTube channel "Guns, Nerds, and Steel", The Fun Pimps, announced that they hired external developers to port the game to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.

Yes I'm aware, TFP made some very bad decisions. Not my problem. I don't own the old version, but I'm very aware of their business and development shenanigans and it influences the trust I'm already unwilling to extend them.

In fairness, I should mention that owners of the old Walking Dead version on console still get to keep that version. It's been delisted so no new purchases can happen and the old version will never see an update or patch for broken things.

All things being equal, if they offer a version that is Xbox Play Anywhere (or roughly equivalent), for a decent price, then I'll probably buy a license on that platform.

Yeah, these guys boggle me with the way they seemingly rework systems constantly. I like to play heavily modded. I liked Undead Legacy, but I don't know if that's still being worked on.

I love the building and how deeply we can interact with the world. I'm not a fan of blood moons, so I usually turn those off and crank up wandering hordes. That just seems more organic and less "70s occult horror movie meets tower defense".

Valheim and ARK are better games, but 7Days is it's own unique vibe and voxel building.

In all fairness owners of the original console version of 7D2D get to keep playing even though it's been delisted from Steam, same as Walking Dead.

I'm told TFP team doesnt  receive any income from that old version, someone bought the game assets out of bankruptcy and they've been collecting the sales revenue the past few years for it.

As I understand things the new console versions still can't be modded but with play anywhere you would be able to run it on PC.

Might as well just buy the PC version in my view, I've come to find out quite a few players are using controllers on it anyways.

No, far from it, has a roadmap through end of 2025 but few believe they will maintain that schedule.

But it's a very full game as it currently stands, especially if you have some friends to come with.

1.0 so far feels like it has less content than previous releases, just much shinier.

Especially annoyed with layered gear and deep character customization being removed.

It's kind of hard to get excited for a 'release' when you've it's been in your on/off rotation for years.

I'm trying the game now after many years and somehow I feel that the game systems have remained the same, I don't know if it's good or bad, but what I really miss is an active defense system (dodge, kick, etc.), shields and more npc characters than just traders. To sum it up, overall the game feels old to me.

I agree with the feeling old part. For me that isn't a bad thing, but over the years, a lot of the changes don't feel very game changing. I'll check the updates for release, but my guess is that the look and feel will be pretty much the same. At this point, they shoud be looking at making '7 Weeks later to die' and moving away from the older version.

i'm SO ridiculously tired of all these crafting "survival" games. Literally throw up in mouth a little everytime i see screenshots of a cool looking game only to see it's another one of these nonsense games. Cheers to all yall that like these but god i hate them so much.

You would have to be tired 10 years ago for this one.

They've promised Bandits are coming, but I suspect they'll end up being just a more sophisticated form of zombie than characters you can meaningfully interact with.  Bethesda the Fun Pimps aren't.  ;)

Shields have long been requested but I've seen no evidence TFP is working on such to date, nor proper swordplay, dodging etc.  All good thoughts though, would love to play a game like that.

Have to take issue with comment that the systems haven't changed over the years.  While I didn't start playing until last summer in A-20 /A-21, I've read hundreds if not thousands posts ad nauseum from disgruntled redditors decrying the many system changes made which those folks believe has destroyed the game.

From the inane, such as last year's removal of bottles and cans used to gather water (probably a top 3 complaint) to some very good ideas such as being to craft a much wider range of items, or having players gather honey from giants hives rather than chopping up stumps in the current design.

There are easily a dozen major systems implemented only to be later removed and replaced with something else.  I'm sure their "let's design something to see what sticks" approach contributed greatly to the 10 plus year dev cycle.

As for making a new game they are already on it, having partnered with another studio (will they never learn?) to work on the new Blood Moons spin off, which probably could have been a DLC or expansion to 7Days rather than a separate game.

TFP devs are many things, but good businessmen they are not.

The character customization / layers gear were largely an illusion, after 2300+ hours in game the past year, much of it at maximum everything I had a lot of time to investigate how things really worked, or didn't.

You havent lost nearly as much as you might think.

Now whether we've gained anything in return it remains to be seen.
