I dont think anyone needs to tell anyone else to "get out of our game" but I also dont think anyone should go INTO a game and expect it to change to what THEY want. It's an insanely self-defeating mentality.
Some people call that customer feedback. Some companies listen to these people and are able to change the product to make money. Other companies learn from their competitors failures.
Apparently MMO devs dont know how to do this. They keep making the same PVP mmo's and flopping 1 after another. With more in the Queue it doesnt seem like it will stop either. The lemmings will keep hurling themselves right off that cliff.
Right so going into a Chinese restaurant and complaining they don’t have Pizza is customer feedback too. About as useful.
Hence in our town we have a restaurant named Mei's Pizza.

I live in a small town, and the only restaurant that served Chinese food went out of business. They might have done better if they had added some variety to their menu, there just wasn't enough business for a Chinese food only restaurant.
I am a bit surprised to see so much focus on the PvP thing, when it's really not core to the game...
For many of us this is not our first rodeo. "It has PvP" without some pretty firm details on how that mode is segregated from PvE activities puts your game squarely in the "don't get your hopes us" category.
I'm rather surprised this confuses you. People not interested in non-consensual PvP don't want to have their time wasted by somebody else looking to get their jollies off on ruining your night.
But the government! is still a bit too vague particularly when there are no details on how planets are acquired or maintained and if they need to be defended from PvP'ers

Such BS these Studios are not coming out with popular Mainstream MMO's in the last decade.
Its not like there are 10-20 super mainstream popular MMO's that have released in the last 10 years.
If anything its the avalanche of failed PVP games or PVE light that allows PVP'ers to control PVE'ers cities/economies.
What would truly be unique is a popular MMO with PVE servers, that has good dungeons, raiding and difficult encounters. Other than Black Desert what game are you actually talking about? Mortal Online 2? Some other indy pvp game that never quite got it together as far as features or technical polish?
Because that's why they are failing.
I will offer that any game that has the polish and feature set of a AAA game will probably require a large player base and that might not happen.
Still ... Black Desert does have its fair share of players ...
ArcheAge
Camelot Unchained
Chronicles of Elyria
Darkfall
Bless Online
Atlas (probably a stretch as an mmo)
Crowfall
Elyon
Elysium
Fractured Online
Last Oasis
Life of Rome
Throne and Liberty
Abyss
Gloria Victis
Legends of Aria
Life is Feudal: MMO
Shroud of the Avatar
Not sure archeAge flopped out of the gate. Camelot Unchained hasn't released.
Chronicles of Elyria didn't release.
DarkFall didn't outright flop until some time after but this is an example of not enough money and experience.
Looking at your list you just "listed a variety of games" that all have different stories. Some are like Dark Fall but worse. Throne and Liberty hasn't released here so we don't know how the Western Audience will accept it.
A lot of these games are just passion projects from inexperienced devs and/or studios without money. Which falls under what I said "Some other indy pvp game that never quite got it together as far as features or technical polish"
There is definitely an audience for pvp games. But players want "good" games. The problem, the real problem, is that the audience for pvp games, especially harsh pvp games, isn't the same size as say, World of Warcraft players or Elder Scrolls Online Players. So the money just isn't there.
A harsh pvp game could succeed but it has to be feature complete and not look/play like A**.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I am a bit surprised to see so much focus on the PvP thing, when it's really not core to the game...
Anyway, on graphics -- our target is adults. But we also want optimistic, hopeful, and broad appeal.
If you do high realism, you run the risk of a) nobody being able to tell your game apart from others b) spending a fortune c) chasing away a broader audience who assumes that the highly realistic graphics means the game is only for hardcore players.
In our case, it also makes it harder to do some of the things we do with dynamic worlds.
Then you need to comment on the pvp features.
You must know there is a rift between pvp and pve players and it ends up becoming a back and forth between the extreme sides of the argument. Perhaps this is an example of developers being so caught up in their project that they don't really have their finger on the pulse of the player base?
As for the art design, your explanation makes sense. You want "optimistic, hopeful and broad appeal."
The design your studio has settled on will certainly give you that. But you will need to settle of pvp part otherwise you will have your "broad appeal" audience showing up and then becoming horrified that they were ganked on "x planet" because the player wasn't aware of the pvp rules.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Yeah @Raph I would say full disclosure earlier is going to serve you better as far as the PvP rules go. It doesn't have to be written in stone, but if you just spell it out like "PvP can only occur under these conditions..." then it will put to rest all of the speculation and hand-wringing. As long as you play coy with what PvP is going to look like most people are going to assume the worst.
Gordon Walton said that UO was going to crash and burn due to the loss of subscribers due to griefing and ganking. They were bleeding subs. Trammel saved it, and people voted with their feet.
Not to say there isn't a market for a good pvp mmo, just that its player base will be smaller, and it has to be designed to survive financially within that constraint.
My player groups include a bunch of former game devs, and, interestingly, none of them will play a forced pvp game now.
Don't care about the present graphics. Though they do look rather silly in their spandex supersuits in what's portrayed as a more SF oriented milieu. But placeholder art does explain that.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
I won't even go near a FFA PVP game unless its like Albion Online (and how it sounds Dune Awakening will be) where there is FFA zones. Even then it becomes a question of risk vs. reward and how much can I enjoy the game avoiding those zones if I so choose. But if I am in a group of good PVP'ers, I would be more likely to go out there. Maybe.
Why are people so afraid of losing stuff that doesn't matter? Part of the gameplay should be getting that stuff back, whether it's finding that person and killing them, or just running content again to get it. In SWG when my armour was shot, I just went and got it again. Some of the best fun I've ever had was in Dayz and you'd spend hours and days getting geared up, then you die and you have to start it again.... But it was ok because that was the fun part of the game.
It just has always weirded me out that people cling on to in game items that are totally meaningless.... Now if this game were on Steam and the items had real world value, then I could see people having a problem.
In fact Raph, use the Steam Marketplace and let's have a real world economy going! I want to sell all my loot for Steam Decks!
Saying that pixels in a game don't mean anything is like me saying pixels on your screen while examining a bank statement mean nothing. So if your bank account read $0.00 in pixels on your screen you'd be okay with calling the bank and them responding "Dude, chill, it's only pixels".
Some pixels represent a significant time investment. Other pixels represent necessary steps to get to new content.
I don't play games to simply blow 100s of hours of time - I'm usually working towards a goal and for goals in a game to mean anything at all the pixels that represent those goals must have some kind of value to the players.
It's okay to be new to video games, but maybe read up on the concept first before throwing ideas around.
The whole argument that "people are afraid" to lose there stuff misses the point completely.
It's simply not fun for a sizable portion of players. It breaks immersion and you no longer feel like you're playing a game.
But for some that "is" the immersion.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Not sure what you consider BS when you quite literally prove my point. The vast majority of today’s games are a mashup of every game type they can fit in.
It’s absolutely the wrong concept for most of these. Which is why I find it silly to go into a game and expect a developer to change it to cater to whatever niche you like. But that’s par for the course these days.
And your list is a mess of non mmos, games that may never release and games that released 15 years ago…Not sure what the point is. How’s Embers Adrift? Palia? Project Gorgon? Loftia? For the King? Wagadu? Pantheon? I can mix and mash too. Not to mention the big games where you can 100 percent ignore PvP like ESO, WoW, etc…
Id like a new pure PvE game to play too. But this isn’t it. It’s largely PvE. If that’s not enough don’t try to force the square peg into the round hole.

If this game wasnt trying to lure PVE'ers in to be targets, then they would straight up have a PVE Exclusive server.
No way this game couldnt afford to have 1 single PVE server. Its not like the PVE community isnt large enough to support it.
The only reason not to give PVE players a safe server, is give the PVE'ers no other choice in order to lure them in as targets with a false sense of security.
This is the game these Dev teams play, and PVE players are tired of it.

I think I just now realized that you literally know next to nothing about this game and didn't even bother to go to the Steam page where the second paragraph is:
It’s a single shardless galaxy full of living planets to explore, settle, and rule with your friends. Thousands of planets and space zones, each persistent whether you’re online or not, all connected into a single galactic online multiplayer game
Or the main website, where the second paragraph is also:
It’s a single shardless galaxy full of living planets to explore, settle, and rule with your friends. Thousands of planets and space zones, each persistent whether you’re online or not, all connected into a single galactic online multiplayer game.
Or from the FAQ:
Q. DOES THIS GAME WORLD HAVE SHARDS/SERVERS?
A. This world is not divided into shards. Every planet and space zone is unique. It takes place in one logical universe. We all play together.
When you continually complain that you want a "PvE Exclusive Server" in a game that has no separate servers, it kind of reveals a lot about the validity of your posts.
Raph has also quite literally said that you can find or settle on planets that have zero PvP. But thats not good enough. Nope, you need an entire separate game system run in parallel to the main one.
I mean, come on. Enough is enough here. Just stop.

Raph, I'd go so far as making a disclosure screen that the user must read - and answer a small 10 question quiz on - before they're allowed to enter the world. I don't know the rules to your game yet, but players shouldn't be allowed to play until they understand the rules. Once understood, they should be given a window to refund.
I say this because no matter how clear you make your website, no matter how many times you explain it in a video, fully 95% of the players who try your game for the first time will have absolutely no clue as to any of the rules - and upon finding PvP elements, they'll stink up the discord and forums with baseless accusations.
I watched a game I really enjoyed get destroyed by a chorus of people who didn't bother to read the box. I don't know if your game is for me or not, but for heaven's sake put in a little bit of effort to protect it, the community, and yourself. Again, you're working years to realize this dream: For godsake protect it.
If someone starts trash talking on discord (different than constructive feedback) or bombing with bad reviews on steam you want to be able to say, "The quiz you took made the rules clear and you were given an opportunity to refund. We were super clear, your reading comprehension problems are not our fault. Thanks."
^-- the people who bought the game because of the ruleset will cheer with joy upon reading this sort of response. I'll buy your game just to see a developer defend themselves even once.

It's like you're in my head.
Oftentimes when I think about the type of game I'd make I have included this exact thing. Including messages that the game world was a "no nonsense/zero tolerance for toxicity, proper player name" type of game.
And not hidden with small paragraphs. Clear screens where the player would agree or else they get their refund and a "thank you for considering" screen.
But I imagine some developers do want that extra income from people who buy, decide it's not for them, and then forget about it.

Please, just yes.
If someone logs in with the name "Boner Boy" or "P|mPM@st@" they've nothing to offer your community but grief. Just ban them outright and be done with it already, instead of waiting for the exploits and dozens of emails from angry players.

I feel CCP has had to walk the very thin line between catering to the desires of players who want to destroy (PVP) vs those who with to build (PVE).
In their cases both types of players are paying customers so if they lean in too hard one way or another in their designs they risk of losing subs.
Over the years I personally think they leaned a bit too hard towards the PVP side.
While they are still somewhat successful I know of at least 4 long time players (my friends and I) who were driven away permanently back in 2016 / 2017 from some design changes made to make it easier to gank miners or reduce the rewards they could earn.
We'll never know if other decisions might have lead to greater popularity or not, but at least in my case they lost about $1K per year for good.

Then their was the Noble Crust which I had high hopes for until I went and found it was an Italian / Southern cooking fusion restaurant. In no world should chicken parm be served along side of grits.....
And no, chicken and waffles is another stupid idea.....

It’s a single shardless galaxy full of living planets to explore, settle, and rule with your friends. Thousands of planets and space zones, each persistent whether you’re online or not, all connected into a single galactic online multiplayer game
Or the main website, where the second paragraph is also:

Or from the FAQ:
When you continually complain that you want a "PvE Exclusive Server" in a game that has no separate servers, it kind of reveals a lot about the validity of your posts.
Raph has also quite literally said that you can find or settle on planets that have zero PvP. But thats not good enough. Nope, you need an entire separate game system run in parallel to the main one.
I mean, come on. Enough is enough here. Just stop.

You just know that people will jump in since it is F2P and the yell about how bad it is.

If someone logs in with the name "Boner Boy" or "P|mPM@st@" they've nothing to offer your community but grief. Just ban them outright and be done with it already, instead of waiting for the exploits and dozens of emails from angry players.
