Last Epoch's big 1.1 update, Harbingers of Ruin, is out today, bringing a slew of new content to the ARPG, along with improvements, the new Evade mechanic, and dozens of new items to try to collect.

    The evade mechanic is actually a nice addition. It makes the gameplay more interesting. They added enemy mechanics which encourage it's use like new high damage PBAOE attacks that have a short telegraph so you can get out of the way. Also lets you evade things that previously you'd just end up eating such as the mortar style attack that happened to land square on you. If you didn't have an ability to dodge it or it was on cooldown then you better hope your health is high enough because you're going to face tank it. The cooldown on evade is pretty low and out of the box you get 2 charges. I don't know if there's gear to give you more. I just started and I'm not even level 20 yet.

    They also added ward to bosses. Their health bar is now in sections and when it hits a section break they gain a full health bar of ward which you have to knock down before you can hit their health again. I imagine this buff was added to offset all the various mechanics you can evade now.

    These are good changes in my opinion as it makes the gameplay more engaging and keeps you on your toes. I'll be interested to see if they changed any of the main boss fights to adjust for evade.

    the ward on bosses also prevents the one shot mechanic which I don't like but its logical and makes sense lol

    Kinda sad this game turned out to be so mid. Slapping on a universal evade to fix bad class and content design feels very underwhelming. Same with the one shot ward. They can't or won't actually fix the problems so they're slapping on these bandaids.

    Couldn't disagree more. I think it's the best ARPG out right now. PoE is a close 2nd, and D4 is not far behind. Season 4 was great.

    POE is still my favorite because the end game had the most variety. Diablo 4 I don't think is good almost anywhere (yes they make improvements but they are so incompetent and everything they do is wrong and we have to complain for them to fix) but I still enjoy the feel of the combat more than LE. Also, D4 lets you skip campaign which is big.

    I had fun with LE until the end game cycle. Torchlight I know I played and hated, but I don't remember now. Probably everything I guess.

    I've only got about 6 hours in the new patch, but I will say, it brings me a lot of hope for LE's new plans. I was upset when they shifted directions to aim at the more online focused type game. I didn't want another POE or D3/4, where they try to get you back in for another two weeks every few months. But honestly, its working out okay for them if this is what they will bring. I completely disagree that the dodge is a bandaid fix. It fits in really well, a lot better than D4. I hope they keep implementing it into future gameplay design.

    The changes to bosses I feel are much more a short term fix. I can't really say I agree with the reasoning the devs gave on discord, and kinda addressed in the patch notes. Theyre trying to work on balancing, and still want the bosses to feature as a big part of the end game, but its just a tough sell for me. With this patch they brought some other changes that we needed to like Spellblades and totems, and mostly left the bird boys and runelocks as power houses, which is great, but they need to figure out a better power curve. The boss changes dont fix the end games walk in the park followed by a brick walls problem, it just kinda puts a sign on the walkway that says there is a brick wall up ahead be warned. Not quite what I was hoping for.

    I guess the real test to see if LE's direction will work out is if they can have 1.2 be a better 1.1. If so, I think we've got a real winner. 1.1 is great in terms of what it brings, and I think everyone just wants that big second dose to really win them over with the end game

    I've been on an ARPG kick. I finished Path of Exile last month and Diablo 4 when it came to Gamepass, just finished Torchlight 1. I'll be participating in the next Diablo 3 season. I acquired the Grim Dawn expansions. And I even bought Wolcen for $4, just because I figured the campaign would probably be worth it.

    Wolcen I believe is going on maintenance mode after this September.
    I'm fully aware that it's shutting down multiplayer and going into maintenance mode. Bluntly, I don't care. I primarily play ARPGs single player anyway. $4 for a 15-20 hour campaign with any kind of ARPG replayability is at worst a low cost risk, and at best a good value.

    i had to login just to say this<3 Grim Dwn, is a surprisingly good game, its open world, it has a very serious storyline wher lore of the families inhabiting the wrold can be foudn.i am not far in the game, i enjoy it<3 its very old, the eldest of D4/POE/Epoch/Grimdawn<3 i find i enjoy last epoch, sometimes, its .. its not midling, its not great , for i dont like the random map, aht is actually not random, its just "forgetting you where htere" so its never random, only the loot. so in tihs, i prefer grim dawn, yet grim dawn is old, and .. lol, i prefer epochs animations and freedom of builds<3 so.. for now i woudl say, .im drunk!<br />
    edit : spelling tha im too drunnk to fix anyways!

    Yeah Grim Dawn is a solid game with a ton of content. Only down side is the game is showing its age in terms of visuals and it's pretty much in maintenance mode now. I'd preorder a Grim Dawn 2 day one, though.

    Content complete and maintenance mode are not the same thing as far as a non-service game is concerned. And considering it's got an upcoming expansion, Grim Dawn is neither.

    Yeah Grim Dawn has another expansion coming out this year I believe. They have an RTS coming out too in the future in the Grim Dawn Universe, and there will eventually be a GD2 but they are building a new engine for that from what I remember.

    Grim Dawn is a magnificent game.  I start characters and believe this or not I still listen and read all the quest text, yeah I just love the game. It's truly a masterpiece and they are continuing to support and improve it with patches and content. What is not to love.

    I would like this game to succeed. I like how they are listening to the players and actually working hard to make the game better.

    I'm a bit burnt with ARPG (D4 was an expected but still huge let down) but I can see myself coming back to the genre with voracious appetite in the future and if by then they have kept improving the game it might be my first choice altough rumors say they might have big competition.

    Titan Quest II. Grim Dawn II. I love how small developers are keeping the flame of hope for the genre alive (while big names directly piss on players and tell them its delicious rain at 90$ a drop).

    See, there are two kinds of ARPG fans - Diablo 2 only fans, and fans of the genre as a whole. The latter are very willing to try pretty much all of them.

    Anyway, I finished TL2, I started Last Epoch and it is making a brilliant first impression.

    I don't appreciate being told what I can discuss where, but I can give my first impressions.

    Game's gorgeous by genre standards, the soundtrack is excellent, and the story is interesting (or at least presented in a more interesting fashion than normal). Animations are nice and snappy in a way only matched by Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2, which is actually a big deal because these games have fluid combat in a way other ARPGs don't.

    The big thing, however, is the passive tree and the skill upgrade webs. These aren't as impressive as the PoE passive tree at first glance, but they're actually way, way deeper when you actually start getting into them. And as someone who has loved buildcraft since Guild Wars 1, Last Epoch is getting my neurons firing more than almost any other game ever has. I stayed up hours later than intended mostly just looking at the skill webs and imagining the possibilities, before landing on a Spellblade focused on fire auras, ward buildup, abd split fire and lightning melee attacks that passively trigger lava talons or static. Basically, it has my approval.

    It also has the other key aspect of buildcraft that made Guild Wars 1 so good and elegant, and Path of Exile/Diablo 2 so unwieldy - QoL. Respecs aren't free, but they may as well be. And all the informative tooltips really help me make informed decisions in the moment.

    Inventory management also seems pretty decent, especially by the terrible standards of its genre. The crafting material storage button is very appreciated.

    And if my first impression carries on as I get further into it, I could easily see this becoming the new genre leader by the time it gets its console version - it may already be well on its way to that best ARPG standard.

    Well I am playing a falconer. I started with a Necromancer but it is more passive since all your buttons are pets. So I tried a Beastmaster and loved it. Then the Falconer and absolutely could not stop playing her. Very fun mechanics and quite interesting gameplay. A bit of a quick button press but am playing on the controller

    Like usual I played too many classes but in the end I am now concentrating on one class because of the loot filter and trying to save on the Runes of Shattering and Glyphs of Hope. At low levels it is not really feasible to play more than one class because the crafting resources are shared.

    Loot filter is quite an awesome thing they have created and you can really tailor it quite precisely. 

    I am definitely enjoying the game and this is my new craze.

    Some of the skills cannot be targeted with the controller so you must be careful what skills you pick for the classes you play if you're playing on the controller. I use the mouse and kb for inventory management and I map with the controller.

    I recall how I fell into the deep well of Path of Exile and got swallowed whole by it and pretty soon was playing hundreds of hours and kept going. These games need a very deep system where the skill progression and different builds are what keeps one entertained. I think Last Epoch may have done it.

    The falconer I believe is something that is unique and no other ARPG has something like this class. A rogue with a pet. I am using explosive traps that create ballista and so far it has been quite a journey through the campaign. I have not reached end game yet. Hope I can manage to get there with my trusty falcon screeching all the way.

    It has some nice options, sure, but in the end, the core loop of loot grind just don't work for me. I need more. I mean, technically, I like both aspects of the genre(action and rpg), but most of the time it just ends up being monotonous grind. With far too much emphasis on the end game.

    My positive impressions are definitely holding strong. Like, don't get me wrong - I absolutely intend to make an annual thing of Path of Exile, Diablo 3, Torchlight 2, Grim Dawn, etc. until I've played all the classes I want to.

    But Last Epoch has me gripped. From a design standpoint it is just a perfect Goldilocks ARPG. As in, there are 3 core pillars of a good ARPG: Depth (Buildcraft), Power Fantasy (Combat), and Convenience.

    Diablo 3, Marvel Heroes, and Torchlight 2 succeed at power fantasy and convenience but fail at depth.

    Diablo 2 and Path of Exile succeed at depth, have mixed results on power fantasy, and utterly botch convenience.

    Diablo 4 succeeds at power fantasy, I guess, but fails on the other fronts.

    Last Epoch succeeds at all 3. And not in a jack of all trades sort of way. It's a master of all trades.
