I think in the US that would be a social security number. Not sure how they would have access to that, though.

It seems they are located in China so that could be a thing.

China regulates video game time, which again a company only adhering to regulatory laws in regions. Meanwhile, we have stupid folks assuming its across the board with everyone.

I am not complaining about someone deciding to be the bigger parent here. It is for certain a parenting issue. Since the parents don't give a shit the Gov had to step in.
Parents here in the US all they do is blame someone else except themselves.

Quite a few of the negative Steam comments I read said that there are two executable files in the game that no one seems to know what they do or why they are there......so I guess it is a gamble whether it is completely safe or not.

Just so you know, since you like to blame the parents and have no idea how powerless parents mostly are to these sort of things, a parent(s) would have home school their kids from the time they are born, strictly control who they hang out with, and ofc, strictly limit any, if any, screen time to any electronic device with internet. That is the only way to protect a child from the world and the harms of the internet.

In the US, many children have seen the music video "pound town" and dance to it themselves with or without their parents knowledge or concern. It takes a herculean effort to make sure such influences don't reach a child's eyes or ears since they could just as easily be effected by it at a friend's house, at school, or some other public place away from the monitoring of their parents.

For a country that's all about "protecting the children" the US sure doesn't give a fuck about free & unlimited access to have dark corner of the internet to the youngest minds. In the last few years alone I could easily pull up child mass murderers who have become radicalized and killed fellow school children and their teachers for no reason at all.

And in light of all this, you want to say the failure is on the parents? Get a fucking grip. The failure is on society. There's no way to protect someone from the internet unless you seclude your children until they are old enough to handle it.

The kids may hate it, people might think the government is over-reaching their authority, but when you see little 3 years in public dancing to "pound town" right after they learned how to walk and living that thug life talking about h0es and b*tches then you know somebody has messed these children up in the head. And society is to blame.

Backwards states liek florida and texas are quick to ban and DEI or non-white, non-christian, non-maga supported books, but if they and the world at large cared restrictions like China would be more popular all over.

Also just so you know, for any china backed game you can be sure they are secretly installing backdoors into your computer. Just like they do for all products made in China like your router...

You either fall into one of two categories. A: The people who don't care about their security and privacy, or B: The people who care about it.

"The main concern was a bit of the terms and services that mentioned having access to someone's government ID, but the devs say that this would only be exercised if necessary. However, this still doesn't sit well with many gamers, as they feel as though granting this information is leaving them open to malicious or possibly dangerous people. "

And it's a 100% legitimate concern. In no way, shape or form will I ever give a company that belongs to the communist state of China my ID and certainly not SS#. Nope. Never going to happen.

As an actual parent with two actual kids that are in high school and middle school and have grown up around the internet all their lives because both my wife and I work in technology, I'm here to say you are completely and categorically full of shit.

I've never even heard of whatever this music video is you're going on about. I literally just asked both of my kids and they have no idea what you're talking about either.

You want to know the secret? Norton Family. It regulates what they can get to as well as the hours they can be on. I also run Life 360 on the older one's phone. Note that he wouldn't even have a phone if school did require it for an attendance app they use as well as the older one's JROTC class uses GroupMe for communications.

However that's just the technology secret. The real secret is being involved in your kids lives, know what they're into and doing, know who their friends are and have a relationship with the parents. Don't outsource your parenting responsibilities to a device and the Internet. Even though it's for sure easier than being an actual parent, you won't like the results. Neither will your kids ultimately.

Last thing I want to address is your whole "it's society's fault" bullshit. You know what society is? It's a collection of individuals. You know what that means? It means for society to change, someone somewhere has to grow a spine and take personal responsibility for how things are going. I'm doing the best to do my part. What are you doing? Other than blaming everyone else, that is. Maybe you're waiting on the government to tell you what to do?

lol developers trying to calm people down, that's pretty funny. Kinda funny when Tiktok owner was trying to calm people down saying that they dont give information to the Chinese government, yet tiktok's parent company was. I mean most people have nothing to worry about I guess as long as they aren't calling China's leader Winnie the Pooh or something. Most people will never have to a country's government interact with them like Russia/China, but if it ever happens, you're pretty much shit out of luck, which is why many people tend to warn about these countries obtaining 'mundane' information.

Gee what a shock a Chinese company, which is a servant to their communist government which requires all software companies to spy on their users and have backdoors to as much personal data as possible, is spying on users in America and around the world to a degree not likely seen before due to requiring Government ID. But but "Only If Necessary"...who decides what is necessary? Netease of the Chinese Government? We all know the answer to that one. It's why I refuse to even download a game on my pc or phone made by a Chinese company. I might dislike most Asian games, but I still happily tryout Japanese and Korean games. Chinese government games, which all Chinese games are, will never be allowed on any machine I own. And yes I know Tencent owns stakes in many western gaming companies, but those companies are beholden to western society laws not that of China. So screw Once Human and I hope it bombs, but sadly sheeple are sheeple.

I'm not giving any gaming company a picture of my photoID/driver's license. I hate having to do it for work every couple of years for background checks.

if you have ever typed any personal info onto your comp or cell phone, its already done, any government with a half assed tech department can find everything they need to know about you if they so choose. Everything you have ever said and done online is for sale and there is nothing you can do about it, corporations US, chinese or from bum fuck egypt dont care about you, money and power is all that matters

It would be interesting to see how little information you can provide and still play.

If I don't buy anything, they don't need my real name or credit card info.

If I don't answer any of their surveys, I don't need to provide usernames, nicknames, social media id's, etc.

SSN and picture ID would of course never be provided to any game.

Can I still play? Create a fake player name, and use a throwaway email and nothing else. Can I still play?

The stuff people are mis-quoting is actually from NetEase's Privacy Policy. Everyone is saying they're taking your Government ID, but that's not what it says in context.

There's two important pieces of context.
    1. It's under the heading: "A. Personal Information we receive from you:"
    - notice the "we receive from you", not "we take from you without your permission".

    2. Then it's the line about Name & Contact Details: "Such as first and last name, ... and government-issued ID, such as passport information, as required by applicable laws for age verification and correction of personal information."
    - notice the "as required by applicable laws for age verification".

    Lots of freak-out about nothing.

As for the "I heard from my neighbor's friend's cousin's hair stylist's best friend's pastor's accountant that there's two programs running in the background stealing your soul!!"

That's talking about two entries the game puts into the Registry (which isn't abnormal). The entries count how many times you run the game, and contains your game account's user ID. SCARY!!
