One character per account seems to be catching people out and then not being able to delete that character compounds the issue. You cannot move servers either as you character is locked to the server it is created on.
It's not getting negative reviews for just character creation issues.
NetEase will collect all personal info they possibly can about you.
For some reason Once Human wants your government issued ID and your passport.
Why does this game want my passport information?
Also, TarisLand is getting a lot of hate here for being a Chinese developed mobile game but Once Human is also a Chinese developed mobile game.
It does not want your passport and Id, thats pure lies. Where did you come up with that crap..
I have been playing it for the past two days. Its a lot of fun and has no pay to win. Only thing you can get in the store are skins which are pretty nice looking.
It does not matter at all. For one EULA's would rarely hold up in court. Secondly, NetEase is a private company and they have no right to my ID. What would they do - email me and ask for it? Travel to my home? They cannot force me to give it to them because they are not a government or law enforcement agency. They can say in their EULA whatever they want and it will not hold up in a court of law. Not to mention the legal fees they would pay to try and do that.
People forget EULA's are basically CYA's (cover your a$$) documents. So basically this says that if a government or police agency comes asking for your information, they can give it to them and they do not have to clear it with you. Also, this primarily refers to certain countries in the world with political and legal systems in which this information is already happening.
People have more to fear from Google and social media than netEase and some statement in a EULA. As a matter of fact, games radar probably does more with your information that that.
And I will add, the main reference in the article to "Certain" US states is that certain US states have banned access to things like Facebook and social media for minors so that worrisome part means you already live in a US state that invades your privacy under established laws.
There is ZERO concern over anything in that article related to information sharing. All of that is standard info sharing basics that is to CYA NetEase and is what already happens with every single gaming company, web browser, social media site, etc... I understand people's concerns but the funny part is when they go to TikTok, X or Facebook to complain about it. The irony is hilarious.
What the HELL are you talking about? EULA lawsuits work very well.
Ask the people sued by Epic Games about how EULAs hold up in court.
Epic Games sued a 14 year old boy for EULA violations for $100 million because he posted Fortnite cheats on YouTube. The lawsuit went on for 4 years and in the end it was settled out of court but the kid's family was financially ruined.
Also, Once Human game is published by NetEase, and they are very litigious. With NetEase publishing WoW in China again they have pledged that if you snitch on someone breaking the EULA they will pay you the equivalent of $14000.
Blizzard asked me for a gov issued ID once. I told them to get bent. Wish someone would make a game for gamers and not corporate greed.....maybe one day.
Yes, the combat wasn't the greatest, it feels like a modern version of TSW.
This is not good, TSW had appalling combat, the worst I had seen for a major MMORPG. So being better is not a vote of confidence. But this is still a Beta is it not? So they have time for some fine tuning.
I don't know. I had a ton of fun in TSW and really miss it to be honest. It was a truly unique setting and some good story writing.
If Funcom was good at something, it was story writing. They had excellent writing staff. Age of Conan had also excellent stories.
The combat in TSW was just a bit of a different take, since it had to be a classic MMO with both modern weapons and classic Melee stuff and some magic thrown in as well.
The biggest issue was the Open ended nature of the skill trees. Which was both a blessing and a curse, as you could literally create a terrible build and get horribly stuck in the game, getting face rolled by even fodder enemies.
They later tried to remedy it a bit, with some recommended build paths, but by then it was a little too late.
The highly anticipated Tokyo expansion was also terribly tuned, terrible content gate mechanism people struggled to get passed, so few made it to Tokyo.... only to be facerolled by overtuned enemies that required very specific builds and gear to overcome.
It's fine for instanced content to have that kind of challenge, but people don't expect to run into such difficulty spikes in the overworld right at the start of an expansion.
It's why the removed Tokyo altogether in SW:Legends and never bothered to add it back in either. /shrug
It was a really shame they botched it so badly, as it left some gaping holes in the awesome storyline that never got concluded. It's just an utter shame they botched the Tokyo content so badly.
Tokyo was in SW:Legends. I don't know why you are under the impression it was not. Africa that came after was also partially released when I was still playing, but as I have not for some time I don't know if it was ever completed.
Maybe they meant Egypt because that's where it was poorly tuned and all over the place in my opinion. Or at least that's where it started to unravel. Tokyo was as well, but got smoothed out a little more.
Egypt is where the P2W really started to kick in too. Life was hard if you didn't pay for the T3 dot upgrade on gear and that was the only way to do it.
I like Funcom games, but I think they ask way too much for what they offer. For me, the value isn't there compared to other options. Although I would have stuck with SWL (I played TSW too), if they hadn't leaned into that paid gear upgrade tier so hard. It just felt so sucky.
Egypt is where I gave on the Secret World, guess that's where my build deficiencies caught up to me.

And you know why they went after him? Damages. Financial damages. It was financially in their best interest to do so. Why do you think games go after cheater or emulators or whatever at a certain point? The legal fees (in your example) for 4 years would be huge so they only go after people when its in their best financial interest.
The issue here is privacy and if a private company wants to come after someone internationally for an ID or privacy concern, its going to cost them a lot. Further, even if its a violation of their EULA, you simply turn it around and request to see how they use the data. If they misuse it at all or do not keep your data secure, you find one unscrupulous lawyer and file a class action lawsuit against the company (those are super popular right now - just as Epic) regarding lack of consumer protection. The amount they would have to pay, combined with years and years of credit monitoring would be painful for even the biggest gaming companies.

Maybe it was your build, but SWL is heavily gear oriented for harder content and the RMT upgrades for T3 dot gear was expensive. It also felt deflating knowing that my key to success wasn't so much my build or skill, but whether I paid for a gear upgrade. I hated that. I would suspect it wasn't your build at all.
This is also that "forced grouping" moment. Even though the content could supposedly be tackled solo, a mid group could faceroll through it. Not literally forced of course, but forced in the sense that if you wanted to succeed then you had only 2 choices: pay up big or group and pay up less.
One character per account seems to be catching people out and then not being able to delete that character compounds the issue. You cannot move servers either as you character is locked to the server it is created on.
IT is up to mixed now but most of the complaints I see are tied to 2 files that run executables after it is downloaded, and no one seems to know what they are or what they are doing.
So far I'm liking what I see. The graphics are good, the animations are good, the base building is solid, the crafting is great, the combat is not only 'better than TSW', it's actually good as well.
The only thing I dislike about it so far is the open world housing. For me prsonally, it simply does not work. Archeage had it, that 'Shards Online' failed MMO had it and it's just appaling. The world is littered with bases and that would be fine if they were actually.. fitting, which they aren't. Most bases are nothing but wooden floors with a bunch of crafting stations stacked onto them. So much for immersion.
I hope this is just the statring area, but if higher-level zones are equally littered with bases, I'm dropping the game. Not only do these bases destroy what little immersion these games have, it's only a matter of time before they become abandoned as the locusts move on to other games to devour, leaving nothing but a reminder of what once was and more importantly; a constant reminder of what isn't.

We are in 2024, now we have folks concern with privacy issues.
Well, it's nice to see the MMORPG community finally embracing mobile gaming.
It's nice to see the MMORPG community embracing anything.
I came back to say : Sleeper hit of 2024. 500k maxed discord. Game is one of the most refreshing games in the last decade. Amazing weapon itemization, crafting, and pet collecting with various activities that are solo and group oriented. It took away some of the complexitity of Pax Dei and the world is pretty massive with amazing graphics that all combined in what feels like an mmorpg.
My favorite part is building the house. it is so much fun ! The water, electric , defense, and vehicle systems are well designed.
I'm so addicted to this one that I can't even play anything else in the 4 maintainence happeing right now.
I would suggest trying it now since they are clearly calling this "novice" mode, so the content will probably scale up in intesity throughout the seasons. This is the first game I've felt a "season" is a masterful fit.

The game is really fun and addictive. It's a mash up of many games and genres but it has its own unique take and identity too. I really can't stop playing.
Game reached 300k concurrent users the other day and it still feels like nobody is talking about the game. Truly a sleeper hit.

Turns out someone namedDon Phil on Steam figured out what the two files were.
"UPDATE: After further research I finally figured it out. Someone at Starry Studios messed up or just doesn't know any better.
Those two startup entries are for analytics tool called AppsFlyer. It's commonly used marketing analytics tool to track installs/uninstalls of mobile games. I dd on't know why they included it in PC release and why are those entries not written in game registry as they should be, but at least now I can rest easy knowing what's up.
What do those entries actually do? One tracks how many times you launched the game, the other is unique ID assigned to your device. That's it.
There's nothing to worry about.
I won't change my review to positive just yet tho. I don't understand why I had to learn all of this thru other sources. There was no reason this couldn't have been explained in developer response."

Reviews will reach mostly positive any time now, people are enjoying it. Though the settlement bug from yesterday's patch might hold down the reviews a bit.
With the files determined harmless I'll give it a go.
Who decided they're harmless? They're undisclosed executables that phone home with data harvested from your PC. Do you know 100% what it is pulling? It could be pulling clipboard data and anything else unencrypted.
We don't have to over react and assume those or more hostile intentions are true, but we also shouldn't give people running code on our machines a low effort pass. We should hold software developers to higher standards in this regard.

Don Phil as detailed in Kyleran's post that you also found insightful.
How many times I launch a game and from what machine isn't information I consider problematic to be collected. Good luck finding data collection less intrusive in games played online these days.

Yes, I found his post insightful, but that doesn't mean "Don Phil" is a trusted authority, or that his claims are valid.
Please don't insult the discussion with logical fallacies about how much data online games collect. That isn't relevant to the point at all. Besides the fact that it's vague and off hand.
Everything I said still stands and you didn't really address it.

It is of course relevant.
If the information collected by a game falls within that typically collected and found acceptable there is no reason to view it otherwise from those titles.
