Soulframe's Hopeful Narrative and Community Focus is Poised to Heal Your Cynical Soul | MMORPG.com
Digital Extremes' upcoming title Soulframe is about healing a world, but maybe they'll be able to heal some of that cynicism you've been harboring too.
I saw a combat vid of the game didnt like it at all Like dark souls but much worse
I kept trying to figure out in that combat trailer if the jumping was some dev with a jumping fetish or if it was necessary for combat. Either way, it was not a good look. The game looks beautiful and the setting and all that but combat was atrocious.
First, I want to say that there is no doubt in my mind that if Warframe had been fantasy rather than sci-fi, I would not have bounced off of it as hard as I did. I tried several times to get into it, but the setting and narrative just left me cold as ice.
Am I optimistic for this game, though? I'm finding it hard to psych myself up. Watching the TennoCon gameplay video, where the devs' voiceover sounds like a word salad of MMO design tropes, I did not feel like anyone's cynicism was being challenged. To me, the very nature of metagaming discussion that comes to inhabit every MMO title is nothing but purest distilled cynicism. It strips the game of its enchanting elements and sense of wonder and renders it all down to a soulless spreadsheet.
I will say, however, that the special effects are quite lovely, even if the combat animations need some work.
DE tried the soulframes approach in Warframes with the Duviri paradox and it bombed. It was too slow and melee focused for a lot of the player base. I wish them luck with soulframe but it is definitely not for me.
Everything I've seen of Soulframe so far has looked terrible, so I don't have any expectations for this game being good. The art direction is kind of cool, but only in the "it's so weird/different that some of these things could prove to be interesting to fight against", but that immediately goes out the window once the combat actually starts.
I bounced off Warframe time and time again, I don't even see myself downloading Soulframe.
The First Descendant is my sexy mistress to keep things fresh in the sheets.
If that sexy mistress just lays there and does none of the work, I guess. Also, she has the personality of a thrice-microwaved potato, and drains your bank account.
You guys, first off this game is still in early development. So stop bashing it on the combat already. Thrones and Liberty as well as a host of other games had crappy combat at first in Alpha footage and they got MUCH better before full release. Second, this game is being made by a studio that seems to care about its players and they have a passion for game development without being a corporate sellout just trying to push out another title and rake in your money.
In my book games like T&L and BDO are TRASH! games for reasons that are too obvious. But games that at least try to connect you to the narrative or some theme or purpose beyond just logging in to grind those games have become my favorite quickly. FYI, look into "Where Winds Meet" That game is gonna be a banger when it releases later this year. Just watch.

For now I'm just a little bit hopeful because they said it thankfully won't be designed as yet more Soulslike trash.

Soulframe is the chubby girl at work that wants my attention but I just can't get into.
Sorry Steve, but what I have seen so far unfortunately brings out all the cynicism in me.
