How did we get to the point that we have to pay to test thier games, thats all early access is.
Didnt gaming companies use to have to hire people to test during "alpha" then during beta they would ask the followers of the game to help by testing the game for free, then have a huge open beta for a week or 2 where anyone who could download the game could play....
I for one think this is the right move. The cost of admission to the 24/7 early access is less than any of the previous alpha pledges and at the same time grants you the ability to be a part of the development.
This isn’t Star Citizen, you can’t buy gear (or ships as it would be in Star Citizen) - the only gameplay bonus is bagspace.
I will pledge and play this with some old EQ buddies

Greed
I would say it's more a source of funding for the smaller companies than it is greed. If EA or Amazon Gaming charges for testing that's a different story.

This is probably why the games are so bad now. Instead of paying for quality experienced testers that make a living doing that.
Whats worse it they actually are building features based on this low info group of people.
When you drag anyone off the street. What quality did they expect.
Imagine next time I need my air conditioner fixed I bring in people that will pay me to play around with it. Pretty sure it will be broke worse once they are done "testing it".

Honestly, you really couldn't work the answer out?
The conversation went like this: Sir, we do not have enough money for the testing phase. Ok, we have so much hype, let's try charging them to play the game early, and we can use the data as test...
Sir!? We made a billion dollars! And they are demanding that we sell them sexy dresses!
Here’s to another 10 years of people “pledging” and the game continuing to be in a pre-Alpha state
I seriously doubt this makes to very far into 2025. Sad, but the writing is not only on the wall, but the roof, the door and the driveway and it's flashing in big, bright, red letters.
