That would be an awful idea. Valorant has a fan base but I wouldn't say it's as large or as rabid as League of Legends. Not to mention that League would translate better to an MMO with rpg elements. There is already plenty of lore and world building done. Not counting separate games and a TV show that has created new fans that may not play the moba due to its sweaty and competitive nature, but might play an MMO or large RPG style game.
I dont really think a real mmofps would work atm but maybe I'm wrong. I mainly think that because the people that shooters do it for the instant gratification nature of being able to get in to something and get out, not really grind which is the nature of a mmo. There's also how the game might handle the grind nature of it, like Warframe handles grinding in bursts like through 10min missions etc. So sure it could all depend on execution but idk. Plus as the person above said, the IP isn't really as strong as say League. It kind of sounds dead on arrival, or might even do as well as The First Descendant which will be forgotten in like a month. All this when Tencent just shut down a recent shooter didn't they? (Riot is primarily owned/backed by Tencent).
FPS players are not always MMO players. And MMO players are not always FPS players. I think they are making a huge multi-million dollar assumption that the two crossover.
Has everyone in this thread gotten amnesia and suddenly forgotten Destiny? MMOFPS has been done and has been/is successful. I know Bungie made some pretty poor decisions with their game, but the fact it's an MMOFPS isn't the reason Destiny has struggled in the past. That's just poor design decisions. The whole 'an MMOFPS won't work' argument is boggling my mind a bit given there's literally a game online right now that you can go play that is an MMOFPS. You might call it MMO-lite, or MMO-adjacent, but I'm highly confident that's exactly what a Valorant MMOFPS would be as well.
Now would it suck? Quite possibly! That's up to Riot to figure out. I'm just saying MMOFPS as a genre is a proven platform that can work.
Project T has always been rumored to be an MMOFPS (Valorant), and Runeterra is the one based off League of Legends which is to be a more traditional MMORPG. Runeterra got reset, and is still in active development, while Project T has continued to move forward. The website referenced (The Riot MMO) even shows this to be the case.
I'd love a MMOFPS. I feel the industry has few, if any, true AA-AAA MMOFPS titles. I'd categorize Destiny as an MMOFPS light since it's so instanced (which works great for them).

Nope not forgotten Destiny at all. Nor Bungie and their recent failures either. My point is I am mainly an MMO player. Most FPS games, including Destiny, are so light on the MMO features and so heavily instanced usually, they are more like lobby type games. At the same time MMO heavy games typically do not have the run and gun combat that draws many to FPS games. That's my argument and this why games like Destiny, Valorant, and others are light on the MMO features.
Destiny and Valorant aren't the same kinds of shooters with regards to gun play and action. Valorant is much more like CS:GO (with an Overwatch style skin) and Halo Infinite with regards to perspective, reticule behavior, and gun play, although I don't think it leans as heavily into the weird recoil patterns CS:GO does.
Destiny and Borderlands have much more similar gun play, reticule behavior, and action. The view and perspective when shooting feels completely different.
If they go with the former, I think it's going to be a flop. If they go with the latter, it could be a hit. Depends on a lot of other unknown factors at this point, so it's really impossible to say.
