The long term problem is that players who make these MMOs possible are being turned off by the failures, Zenith lasted two years in early access and is now on the way out.
Does anyone here believe that these early adopters who put money in will now just jump to another MMO in development? To me it seems like the pool of players prepared to do this must be continually dwindling.
The other side of the coin is that in the few indie MMOs that have made it like Albion Online, early adopters there may well put their money in again for the next in development MMO. But they are the proportionally rare, those suffering from disillusion must be far greater.

I don't disagree, but in the case of Zenith...a VR MMO? Niche as it gets. First of all the percentage of gamers with VR is small, the percentage of those gamers who play MMOs even smaller. And then people like me who love VR and love MMOs but have no desire to play an MMO in VR. This one never had a chance. I commend them for trying it, but I think it will be a very long time before we see a successful VR MMO.

Sure, but it depends on what sort of "MMO" you do, some MMO formats are more mainstream then others. You can see why the idea of a VR MMO appeals, but is the technology even there for a good enough implementation?
