After 20 years I hope Blizzard is considering making a sequel. Hopefully Microsoft didn't buy up all these Blizzard properties unless they intended to use them.

I can only imagine the hype a WoW2 would get in the mmo community. It wouldn't be for everyone but it would probably be the most anticipated mmo we've seen since...well... WoW.

I know the counter-argument is why make a sequel when the original is still bringing in cash/subscribers. That's true... but there is precedent. Everquest 2 was a success, Guild Wars 2 and most recently Path of Exiles 2 despite PoE still having massive success.

I don't believe they will. They've addressed this and said that they didn't want to cannibalize their community.

I also don't believe they know what a "World of Warcraft 2" looks like as far as game play. I mean, they couldn't make another mmorpg sequel as they didn't think what they were working on was fun so they ended up scrapping it and reusing the assets.

Well, hopefully they consider making another mmorpg with another property.

While I expect WoW's playerbase to continue to slowly dip over time it will undoubtedly be profitable for Blizzard for a while yet.

EQ2 is still no where as popular as EQ1. GW was niche and GW2 took a while to even find its footing. It can pull ok numbers whenever new content is added, then it wanes. PoE isn't even an mmo......

WoW doesn't need a sequel. People keep thinking a new engine and more action oriented combat will make it more popular. If that's true then just wait for turtle wow to do their UE5 'update' and see if WoW 'dies' from that. Sometimes I dont think people understand how numbers and eras really work. WoW was popular at its time not really because its a 'great game,' it was just born in a 'great time.' Its competitors were pretty 'hardcore' competitively speaking but Blizzard was also a marketing juggernaut. Alot of well known shows at its time had wow nods in them (most 'gaming nerd characters' in shows played wow) plus they paid for actual popular actors to promote it. Times have changed a lot sense then on all fronts.

What are the  likely possibilities for a WOW2?

    1) A sequel set far in the future as they could never line up the story with wherever WOW leaves off.
    2) A reboot that retells the same story
    3) A reboot that reimagines the story and changes things up

Frankly, none of those sound appealing in an relatively small market these days.  My guess is that they'll milk WOW dry until classic and retail no longer earn them enough money to justify further support.  Then they'll consider what to do next.

Blizzard isn't the developer they once were and if they can't even get retail systems and story right, why should we expect them to get it right with WOW2?

Just FYI the Activision/Blizzard acquisition was primarily about the Call of Duty IP which outsells WoW many times over. Blizzard just came along for the ride. I don't expect Microsoft to do anything innovative with the Blizzard IP's. My understanding is Blizzard has a lot of autonomy and are sorta masters of their own fate. As long as they're profitable as a studio, Microsoft will be happy to let them do their thing. If they start floundering financially either Microsoft will step in, or more than likely, sell them off or just cut them loose. Activision was the prize they wanted.

We know that The War Within is the first part of a trilogy saga so we can easily expect two more expansions. Assuming Blizzard is faster with generating content, I would say we can expect these at around 15 month intervals (at best). That's 2-3 years at least. That takes us to 2027-28 in my opinion. At that point, do they continue with WOW? I am not sure if thats the question....to me the question is what do they do with the Warcraft IP? I think its a setting for some sort of gathering/crafting/building game. Take what we did in Warcract I, II, III as an RTS and to a degree in the Draenor expansion and make it first/third person with true gathering and building. And of course with that Blizzard spin. That's what I would love.

Of course there is another possibility. Do Warcraft and Diablo exist in the same shared universe? Think of the possibilities..... :)

Faster with generating content than who? Blizzard? I'm not aware of anyone else making WoW. What do they do with WoW in 2028? Create another trilogy worth of story arc is my guess. Not like they didn't just pull the war within out of their backsides after all.

Sorry, I should have clarified. faster with generating content than in prior development cycles. Supposedly the releasing of the next two expansions in the world saga are supposed to come faster than they have released content in the past. Other than BC, time between expansions was usually around 22-24 months. I would guess the target for the next two are 15ish months for each.

The way the World Soul Saga seems to be formulated, I expect Azeroth's destruction to be the culminating factor, i.e. another Cataclysm-ish event but this time ya gotta find a whole new planet. That's a good way to segway into a WoW 2. But since I have no faith in Blizzard's creativity or risk taking abilities any longer, they'll likely just do some hand wavy thing like everyone gets transported to the past or an "alternate timeline" so they can just keep going on the same busted ass trail they've been on for the last decade..

They leave out content on purpose and put it in Season 1 and leave out more content on purpose and put it in season 2 and leave out more content say that it might be a season 4 thing.

For WoW 2 I wouldn't put it pass them to go that age old alternative WoW future where the landscape been altered by some world changing force and it's some time in the future route or Keep WoW but rename it WoW 2 and make you buy it again.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Fun expansion so far. If you like WOW this will likely be something you enjoy.
I think after so many years on the market, many people are burned out on the game.
If you are not, it is fun and what you want, more WOW.

We dont need a WoW 2. We need a good MMORPG. Blizzard can't make it. They have been stagnated or in free fall for at least the last 10 years.

They have nothing left in them. Blizzard died when all old school people left/retired. Their actual managers wouldnt be able to run a McDonalds and the developers/designers (which all come from the "Ivy leagues" of IT Colleges) don't add all together as much talent/imagination/passion as a dude that learned C code in his garage in the 80s had in a finger.

This is what end of the road looks like for a society that has embraced socialism. The N-tenth expasion without any soul, quality, talent to try to milk the dead cow a bit longer.

Yep, I agree. Its more WOW. if you like WOW, you will like the expansion. If you do not, it probably will not convince you to like it. Lots of folks returning as well which is good to see. Servers are crazy crowded as I think its drawing any returning players for sure.

It is a shame but as a few have already said it is very unlikely and even if they started today you would be looking at a four year wait so play WoW (or your favourite MMO) till then. :)
