I'm not surprised Blizzard agreed, stories like this can tug at peoples heartstrings, and whatever Blizzard's motives in agreeing to this, it's a story worth telling to a larger audience.

Something about this person does feel familiar to me though, I just can't place it. This could be one of the really small handful of WoW players that I recall seeing very large in-game player memorials.

There's many people that because of deliberating conditions choose to live their lives in MMOs as an alternative means of socializing and, just, living. Cities, regions, economies, housing, travel, adventures, etc.

Back in the day we used to think MMO life would one day be recognised as just part of everyday life. That never happened, social media stepped in and became the only way online life is allowed to part of real life.

That self identification that social media has, its roots in real world activity meant gaming could just not compete. What might have been?

Blizzard has all kinds of memorials in game with former players, devs, and even celebrities. Some of the memorials can be very moving and emotional. I appreciate that Blizzard recognizes things like this beyond just gaming. Games can be a community which is important to understand.

to add to this........ it has become just toxic BS for the most part of it imo. and think how the mmo life could have been something where everyone just functioned in a society without "hey its all about me , now watch just me" and we worked together in a fantasy world possibly making humanity better while having fun , i know that is a stretch but.....

We can’t do that “out of game “ how are we going to do that in a game? ;)

It was a utopian ideal that would never have been fully realised but at least we were aiming high. What we got from social media was a self obsessed "how low can you go".
