ArcheAge Chronicles, formerly known as ArcheAge 2, was officially announced and unveiled during yesterday's State of Play, and one aspect of the announcement has become a sticking point for interested fans: is it an MMO?

Does the console audience actually feel this way? I mean pretty much everything these days has a live service function bootstrapped onto it, this reasoning seems like nonsense.

Console players are very fickle to try "new" things. So in short, yes.
What I mean by that is it would seem pretty self explanatory, that is it refers to an online service based game, that allows a large/massive number of people to actively play together. Although I've seen so many alternative descriptions, such as that it only means that there's a large number of people on the server, which would make a popular single player online game a MMO (ex: some still try to call Genshin Impact a MMO, which is a single player game, with a bit of optional multiplayer). Then there's those town hub, instanced dungeon games that tend to only allow about four people to play together, yet many people claim they are MMOs, because look at all the people you can see in the town hub. Except that's not an active play zone, the four player dungeons are, and four people most certainly isn't a massively multiplayer experience.
They're likely referring to Japan, which really love their consoles, but treat MMO as a taboo term.
Over there if you pay attention, online game devs make a point to not call their games MMOs, just look at official Japanese statements for Phantasy Star Online 2, and past Japanese statements for Blue Protocol. You will not see them call their games MMOs, but lots of people, or non-Japanese companies handling such games outside of Japan tend to slap MMO on them all the time. Basically everything that is an online game tends to get called a MMO by some people in the West, hence my comment above my response to you.
not only that, the term mmo is so vague that it will 100% anger someone.
for someone 100 people in one place could be considered an mmo while for the next guy it's 1000, you just can't please em.
safer to just call it a morpg or action rpg.

Even if I can get a few months of that experience in AA2 before it becomes more monetized I'll be quite content.
It's rare to have polished sandboxes that are graphically so impressive so I'll have to take a peek at what they offer.
one must play these things for the “now” not as an investment of time 5 years from now that might not happen.

I think it depends on your customers....
It's the damn definition, and dilution of what MMORPG used to mean. Those of us who have been around 25 years have a far different meaning than people who are getting involved today. Thing is, both sets of dollars spend, and calling it a lobby based, or MMO-Lite, or whatever probably appeals to a bigger chunk of people.
Us dinosaurs aren't near the majority anymore (if we ever were), and they realize we aren't likely to be core players of any of the new style or self styled MMO's, and such.
If you lose customers by accurately describing your game, the issue isn’t the description. It’s that you made the wrong game.

Us dinosaurs built the mmo genre customer base!
There are actual worlds out there that aren't just disposable action rpg clickfests in mmo clothing arguing semantics!
Enjoy your game!
Same with VR gaming actually.
Time will tell.

Years and years back we reached the point where players were making the F2P case for studios, players had bought into the studio dogma totally. If we get to that point crypto will end up in nearly every online game.
