ESO hands down with a sub is the best option on the market in 2024.
ESO is a wierd one because people seem to either love it or hate it...There doesnt seem to be much middle ground. Also it is a HUGE download (well over 100 gigs) so make sure your PC has room and your internet is fast or it wil ltake forever to download it.
I loved my time with ESO. I would still be playing it but for the bugs. I have never seen such a quality game that was also so broken. Servers are janky. PvP is beyond broken. The community thinks that animation canceling is actually a combat feature. I could live with the last one but Cyrodiil is a shell of what it used to be. Yet, I would still call it the best MMO out right now.
Yeah... we have focused on PvE so far. Done some runs in Cyrodil that were fun, but not sure it would stay fun after years of doing the same thing. The XvX arena battlegrounds are.. well.. what they are. Never been my cup of tea in any game.

If not for the lag and bugs I would have played that PvP for years.

We did some sieges and didn't really experience any lag. Not sure if they made improvement or we were just lucky. I forgot how cool it could be to launch trebs or pour boiling oil on enemies.

Cyrodiil was 600 vs 600 at launch. Could not keep it stable. Down to 500 then 400 and then 300 vs 300 when I left. Every year when they would do the Cyrodiil event, Cyrodiil would be lag free and no freeze. Rest of the year it was useless at peek when large scale battles happened. Then ball groups started and just made PvP no longer about skill. Most of the PvP community left. It's a shell of what it used to be.

I don't think I've ever seen a positive post about the ongoing state of PvP in ESO. Those that favour that should probably play a different MMORPG.

I thought they were doing some big PvP overhaul in ESO? I might go back depending on how that turns out.
They did some work on that this time around for smaller scale PvP but I don't do that so wasn't paying much attention to that part of the video. They probably have at least a summary of that on their site still.
Well, if you were a new player and looking for an MMO to join, I'm going to say, GW2, is going to one of your best bets
It's an older game, but unlike a lot of other older MMO's, the community is helpful, and welcoming
Since GW2 does not deal with level or gear grinds, there is no sense of needing to race to end game, I just joined a "all welcome" RPG guild in GW2, and the advice seems to be "Enjoy the game" do the story, look at the maps, don't rush, as nothing is going anywhere, and you're not going to miss anything important
I mean other games feel and look better then GW2, and I won't begrudge anyone for wanting that, an old hat of mine is still DDO, with a extreme grindy look centric game, but with the rise of Open World Legendary Armor, Gear, and Items, along with the Legendary Kits, to really help people out, they have made the game far more accessible to the casual and starting player
So if you were just looking for an MMO, where you could just jump, and in be at end game in a short time, able to do all the content without needing to grind your fingers bloody, I would say GW2 is a game to look into
There is still a good chuck of elitism in the raid community, so if you still need that, you can get that in GW2 as well.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
I have returned to EvE and Albion Online, but instead of being a chickenshit PvE rat I have started diving into PvP. Human opponents is the only way to keep any games fresh for long after all.
I was curious what people think of LOTRO at the moment. I have heard mixed things on the community (super nice and helpful vs. elitist jerks who hate new players). I was in the beta but last played the game probably 10 years ago. I know its dated graphics and stuff but a lot of the recent LOTR content has me wanting to play.

If you want to try LOTRO I would recommend the new legendary servers. They are very friendly and somewhat populated. They are still in Angmar with Mines or Moria opening up in a couple/few months.

I recently gave it a whirl and joined the new server. I liked it. My friends not as much so we moved to ESO. I have a bigger tolerance for the outdated nature. I just love the setting, music and so on.

If you want to give it a go I suggest you subscribe as their f2p system is rather poor. It's not all that lore accurate either so be prepared for some liberties but it's as close to the LotR you can currently get in MMORPG form and worth the trip in my view.

ESO staff has promised every year for year they were going to fix Cyrodiil. They always have a plan but never an exicution. I'm not sure why MS does not drop the money to fix it. They had a great PvP community.
Guild Wars 2 is my favorite so far; I love the immersive world and the dynamic events that keep the gameplay exciting. The community is fantastic as well, which adds to the overall experience. Recently, I was checking out aviagames reviews to see what they have planned for next year. I'm really curious about their upcoming releases and any new features they might introduce. It’s always interesting to see how game developers evolve their titles and respond to player feedback.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
