Well never count out Bioware and RPG games. Anthem was a different animal so I only knock their Mass Effect Andromenda misstep (which wasn't even that horrible).
So the last acceptable Bioware game was Inquisition which came out exactly 10 years ago?
The problem is, Bioware is just a name under which people work and release games. Unfortuantely, most of the people who created the games we fondly remember no longer work for this, leaving us just with the name of Bioware.
Personally, I believe the real Bioware died when Ray Muzyka left the company, but I will gladly stand corrected. But then again, I would also gladly call an unreleased game "GOTY!" for money.

Ignoring the “game of the year “ marketing, there is no reason to believe that better (but different) people can join them and make a good game.

Lack of preload is a problem? I guess I'm spoiled with high speed Internet and I just assume everyone has access. Probably not the case. However, I can appreciate not wanting your game to be pirated literally before your paying customers get to play. No DRM means this game will be pirated like no tomorrow, but if Bioware is comfortable with that Im not going to complain. Note: I will absolutely buy the game should I play it. I don't pirate anything. Music, movies, software, operating systems. You could audit every device I own. As a software developer myself I cannot ethically pirate someone else's work and then expect people to pay for mine.
I am looking forward to seeing what the masses think. I did watch some combat videos and it looks awesome. I really like how the companion system works and the UI for selecting skills in combat. Cant wait to see more.
This is the first game in a while that I've been actively excited about. I love Dragon Age & Mass Effect and just about everything I've seen has me feeling confident about Veilguard.
I will never understand why people think the original creators of something have to make every installment of it for it to be good, or that the legacy established by one party can't be respected and continued by another. People have always been extraordinarily harsh towards BioWare games, if they don't live up to some personal standard then that's a travesty and must mean the company is cooked and 1 second away from closure.
What I've seen definitely appears to honor the core of what Dragon Age is, even though I am disappointed in the world state decision (though admittedly it makes sense for various reasons, both in lore and design). I love the art style, as it looks like an amalgamation of all preceding titles wrapped into one. It was instantly recognizable to me before the words Dragon Age ever appeared and I think it would be silly to expect that after 10 years since the last installment there should be 0 attempt to evolve the series and modernize how it plays.

That's fair, but they are milking the Bioware name, so it is also fair to ask who if anyone is left from the original team.
To me this is the team that made Anthem, not Bioware's great franchises, that does not bode well, but as always let's wait for those reviews.

They are a company called BioWare. They make games. They don’t just fold up because people leave.
Some of the same people who worked on previous games will work on current games. Newer people will work on current games.
Some of these games will be good and some not so much.
And you don’t know who made Anthem or what went on behind the scenes on that game.

Anthem wasn't even that bad. It was unfinished. It needed more content and more polished. But for my money, it was a better game than Destiny or Warframe were when they first launched. Great gunplay, peerless visual customization, fun traversal.
I quite enjoyed the first game. Didn't bother to finish the second game because I thought it was junk. Kinda iffy about Inquisition, but I did finish it. I find I have zero interest in Veilguard. Maybe if it ends up being good I'll get it for cheap during some Steam sale, but that is about as much interest as I can muster up at this point.
The very fact you bother (reading and) posting about DA:V means there is at least some kind of interest present. I would say that is true for me as well. But it's very low tbh. I only really cared about Origins, other two are ... /whatever.
Also interesting move on going DRM free.....it's almost like they want to be able to say, "piracy!" if sales tank.
Or.... hear me out... when your game is dealing with a wholly manufactured hate campaign before it's even out, it's generally a pretty good idea to reach for a free PR win like this.
Also interesting move on going DRM free.....it's almost like they want to be able to say, "piracy!" if sales tank.
I doubt that considering DRM doesn't actually prevent piracy as successfully as it used to anymore, it might delay it for a day or two which is why there won't be a pre-load period, instead.
This has more to do with the fact DRM has become a big source of contention, especially among single-player games and this is an offline only game. DRM can cause weird performance issues that are hard to get around and EA/BioWare have opted to not hassle with that since there is already gonna be enough of doomer content on the internet about the game regardless of how good it is or isn't.

No one is cracking Denuvo after Empress left the scene so it does delay piracy far longer than a day or two.

Are you saying Bioware did not make Anthem? It has to be the same team, sure maybe a few have moved on or come in but the same team.
Do I think EA gave Bioware the wrong game to make? Yes I do, but a lack of big success is not a positive however you look at it.
Well of course Bioware made Anthem, and as for the team I
guess that depends on how much impact you think the *leads* in the various sections
of development have, many of the rank and file following those leads orders may
be the same.
The Design Director (also the Lead Writer, Artist, Producer)
is / are not the same people as it was for Anthem / Andromeda (that design director
lead Preston W. however has been with Bioware forever, was the lead on Mass
Effects / Knights so even the old school folks can toss some gutter balls on
occasion).
Most importantly the person with the final say on designs, the
creative director for Anthem was not involved with Dreadwolf aka DA: Veilguard
and in fact is no longer working at Bioware. They went through several Creative
Directors (amongst other positions) with this title which could be a problem, however.
No Denuvo is great but so far, my main interest in this game
has been the potential for custom made difficulty levels instead of just adding
hp sponges. I don’t have a real sense of anticipation for this game unlike
Andromeda and have no plans to pre-order
this one, like many I will wait to investigate if I want to play it after it is
released.
For the record I didn’t hate Anthem, maybe because I had no
expectations, but I didn’t like it either. Andromeda I generally disliked. The only
offering I have loved from Bioware in recent memory was the Mass Effect
Legendary Edition.
At least once they finish this long-delayed game up Mass
Effect 5 will move out of pre-production and get into full swing.
You know I just dropped back in to say I really loved Anthem. I understand why it failed and that it wasn't so easy to fix, but the Colossus gameplay was my absolute favorite shooter gameplay of any type of shooter bar none gameplay. I really miss playing that class. The issues with the game were itemization, they literally only had one dungeon worth a crap, and the end game was subsequently pointless. None of that is easy to fix and required a massive overhaul of design and systems and levels that was just too tall of an order for the team so they abandoned it. However there were elements of the game, the micro gameplay loop in particular, that were solid gold and would be worth replicating in another game with the other elements addressed. Someone on that team got it right.

You guys are following studios way more than I do, I take you point on the "final say" but the Design Director can't wave a magic wand, it is the same team that made Anthem. When I brought that up it almost seemed like a all to arms for some posters, not saying it was rubbish, but is was not a success and that's the latest project of the current team.
I liked every Mass Effect and Dragon Age so far, sure some were better than others but what bothered others in some of those titles never really bothered me.
My gut feeling from finally looking at some videos is DA:VG will do better, it will be a success by which I mean about a 75 to 80 at MC (Anthem got 59 btw). I know I give MC scores way too much credence but we don't have much else to determine what a success means. Even sales and Steam populations don't mean as much as they used to now that players drop off like flies after a couple of months.
But still for me there is a big question mark until we see some reviews, I never pre-order so no change there for me.
Also interesting move on going DRM free.....it's almost like they want to be able to say, "piracy!" if sales tank.

Yeah no, denuvo is hard as hell to crack and not many scenes group can, like mentioned by kitarad. Lots of games with denuvo are out now and haven't been cracked yet.
Denuvo really helps game sales in that it pushes legit sales up higher, when it's a good game, as lots of gamer pirates included don't want to wait 6 months or more to play a game when it comes out.
Take for example Black Myth Wukong and Star Wars outlaws.
I am not so sure Veilgard will sell that well but we will just have to wait and see. I predict lower than expected sales.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

If sales were their concern they would have every incentive to use it if it was going to push up sales enough that it's worth the other hassles that come with using it which are numerous and well documented. Denuvo is very consumer un-friendly, and it causes a lot of technical issues with the performance of many games that wouldn't otherwise exist if it weren't for Denuvo, this is well documented. BioWare would have weighed and may have decided that the cons outweigh the pros.

Is it because it won't have it or because the game itself is intrusive malware and doesn't accept 3rd party competition?
This game is gonna be so bad is gonna cause Dragon Age Sucks Derrangement Syndrome in the usual suspects.
