I haven't played a tab target MMO since WoW about 20 years ago. Get with the times Intrepid.

And do you think any of today's MMOs have the staying power of those MMOs from 20 years ago? In other words which MMOs made in the last five years do you still see as being here in 20 years time?

I wouldn't conflate tab targeting with staying power. ESO has been around since 2014 and is not tab target. DCUO has been around since 2011 and is not tab target.

What does that have to do with tab targeting? Tab targeting doesn’t make a game good. Or bad for that matter.

    100% agree.

Rather than debate whether there should be tab targeting I'd love to hear from people who have actually been in the Alpha and get their impressions of the game.

I think bugs and glitches are absolutely expected.  I think incomplete classes and broken skills (OP or useless) are to be expected.  I think poor AI is to be expected.

I'm not concerned about text sizes or nameplate colors or anything along those lines.

But I am reading that they only have half of a single zone actually completed in a playable condition.  That to me is more concerning because that would indicate that they have a long way to go or will be releasing a very small portion of the game at "launch".

I also read that when many players gather that the lag can get unbearable. For a game positioning itself around it's PvP and Node Warfare... that has to get fixed.

So... any readers have 1st hand experience they want to share?

Normal and so is that they wont have the whole world fleshed out. I think makes sense they need to get part of the zones to more or less polish and then evolve from there.

Surely you understand the difference between "the whole world" and half of a single zone right?

We should get more eyewitness accounts shortly as the Alpha 2 phases start and see what's legitimate and what's just noise.

If they can test whatever they need to test in half a single zone it's no issue yet. There's reports going around but as good or bad as they are they will not mean much more than theres still a lot of work ahead as it's expected. The masses only care about is when they will be able to get their hands on it and there's no wipes.

I highly recommend visiting the Ashes subreddit for an interesting perspective from core fans. The sub is fairly positive on the game and most posters are way more optimistic than here, but also they seem honest about what isn't done and what bothers them.

The short answer is, from reading some of their threads, most feel the NDA should have stayed and that there is not enough content done and that their projections for completion are unrealistically optimistic. It seems they fear the game will be too harshly and severely judged. Outside of that they seem positive about what they can experience and what little there is to play. The combat impression is mostly favorable. The unfinished state of the classes and there only being one flavor of node style being big frustrations.

Go check it out for yourself though, if you haven't yet. My impression is just based on posts on my feed and looking through the most popular threads on the sub recently.

Yeah I have checked it out.   I guess the folks that have played so far are either the ones that spent a shit ton of money or those "influencers" who have built up a following.   As the Alpha 2 opens to more people I think we will get more of a realistic view.

    We shall see!

How long has this game been in development?

Anyone recall..it just seems like we been talking/hearing about it for a long time now, personally  I don't think this game will be for me as I get a strong feeling that gameplay loop/mechanics will be very griefing and/or toxic favorable considering what I read about Steven Sharif in the other recent thread on this game.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Agreed and I've wondered that too about them because it isn't readily apparent from their posts how much they've bought in for. I have $135 in from the KS campaign, but it's been so long I've lost interest. I'm also sort of pushed off by the sweaty comments about PvE. It gives me that out of touch Crowfall "Play to Crush" vibe.

Are you going to play A2? I'll be interested in hearing the feedback if so.

Crowdfunding/assembling a team slows things down a  lot. It's not like traditional dev cycle where things are in place already and you start production years before any annoucement in place.

Lifting NDA has only one benefit, making more people aware and possibly interested in investing in the game. General public or Studio/gaming investors.

Rest is all negatives as the public is not ready for seeing games in rough alpha stage and critizes anything and everything meaningless stuff, most gamers just want a game to have fun with, not help a game reach that stage.

I got my email for A2. I'm guessing it's part of the KS package on my account triggering? Not sure because I don't recall asking for for access recently. If I were to have done so, it would have been years ago.

The interesting thing is there is a visual NDA in place. From the email: "This test is under visual NDA. While you can talk about this test, do not share anything visual, such as videos or screenshots from this test, outside of official NDA’ed channels set up for this test. If you do not agree to NDA’ed testing, please reply to this message and we will remove you."

Since it doesn't explicitly prohibit mentioning it like almost any other NDA, that it's okay to post that.

It makes sense because I've also read feedback in Reddit that there are placeholders, and while some of the completed zone work looks great, other accessible areas look much rougher. Outrage culture and an opportunity to put people in their places won't allow imagery discussions to consider that nuance.

One very positive aspect is that the email read like an actual test, not a PR marketing setup. For example, one of the test focuses mention testing and stressing the queuing and login system, which I inferred is in preparation for the upcoming A2 testing based on the rest of the email.

Indeed, perhaps I should have made that clear. So I don't think tab targeting is a hindrance, but nor is it why WoW has been with us for so long. They did tab targeting really well though, having well made gameplay systems does count.

Regardless of this or that gameplay mechanic which MMOs made in the last five years will still be around in twenty years? I leave that question open to you all, not saying I have an answer here but I recon very, very few, if any at all.
