I have been a backer since 2012s kickstarter. I really wont make that big of a fuss about the adjustment of # of star systems because I have seen first hand how detailed the current solar system is. I have been saying for a long time, just polish what u have and put it out. There is endless exploration in the current system. Getting 4 more systems like the current will be insane. I expect they will be even better since genesis and their tech has been developing to make them faster and even more detailed/realistic.

If CIG were scammers, I agree that they wouldnt be putting as much effort and detail into each area. They would be just randomly generating or copy pasting the same blueprints for bases all over. Its obvious they care and are trying to push the industry forward. They are working off of an crytek engine which they have basically rebuilt entirely. Stop hoping for their downfall.

I don't think anyone said CIG were scammers. But a large portion of their backers supported this project more than a decade ago (including me) exactly because of the exploration the game (and CIG) promised.

Perhaps you, Max and many others do not care about it. Or perhaps you don't remember what was promised to the backers back then. We do.

I don't care how detailed our 5 systems backyard will be, it is very far from the exploration gameplay that was hyped 12 - 6 years ago, with the corresponding (and expensive) ships and game packages that accompanied those promises.

Now 12 years after Kickstarter, CIG are trying to find a legalistic technicality to weasel out of the commitment they made and based on which literally thousands of backers gave them money.

There is no scenario in which a handful of hand-crafted systems and planets will ever come close to what was advertised by CIG as far as exploration goes. See @Golgot post for illustration.

Again, you may not care about this specific commitment by CIG. But there is a non-negligible part of the player base (up to 30% based on CIG's own surveys) for whom this is the core part of SC and the reason they backed this and based on what CIG advertised. Now 12 years later, CIG are hiding like cowards behind technicalities instead of owning up their failure and offering ways out of this mess.

It simply beggars belief that in such a clear breach of CIG's own commitment, people would actually rush to their defence with all kinds of strawman arguments about more detailed handful of planets that will be available. The whole idea for exploration was to start with 100 systems and expand from there, instead of flying over your lousy backyard. Care for a trip to Stockholm?

I do remember what was talked about. As I do am okay with this direction the game is taking now.

We keep going back to exploration, to start like I argued before, discovering star systems, planets and moons, would never be anything more than novelty in an MMO, where this 101 does not work with a limited number of systems be it 5 be it 100... Discovery would have to be scripted like every other MMO does, instead of having systems already mapped in your client, maybe you'd have to visit locations to map them, or buy that data from other players, stuff like that, which might still be a thing btw.

So exploration embraces the design shift:

    • Are you still going to explora for transient jump points that dynamically appear and disapear and open new routes? Yes that continues being the design.
    • Are you going to be surveing planets/space for valuable resource hotspots that are a must-have for stuff like base-building and orgs? Yep.
    • Is info-running still part of the design? Yep, which is why they made a question of stating you can map POIs and trade those locations (stuff like the sellable markers giving info of say a resource deposit for example so you could sell it).
    • Are exploring planets looking for POIs, loot and such, blueprints (also tied to the new crafting direction of the game), that is not mapped by the game  to start with? Yep that is the main area they're investing on RN.

Exploration gameplay is there.  I am not worried that exploration won't take its place in 1.0, but it has to be adapted to what exploration is in pretty much any MMO, where you explore the game-world with countless other players.

And that's talking organic exploration, the rest is the game's own progression like missions to gain rep with each of factions & the large englobing guilds:

Now 12 years after Kickstarter, CIG are trying to find a legalistic technicality to weasel out of the commitment they made ..
We already knew they were to create a fraction of the planned star systems by launch 7 years ago. Let's not act like this is news.

"But with so much promised, and no release date to look forward to, will RSI and Cloud Imperium games live up to the promises it made nearly a decade ago? "

1.0 and all the promises made in this article mean nothing, just like the promise of 100 systems at release now means nothing. They have no release date, no roadmap with release on it.

"With Star Citizen 1.0 being… well, a full 1.0 commercial release, being a “full game” instead of a perpetually pre-release build ..."

Right, 12 years of development and they don't have a "full game" yet. Just more promises. SQ42 has been pushed out 2 more years, no date at all for SC. There's no point in arguing over whether they will have 100 systems or 5 systems at release, they have ZERO systems at release now.

I don't think anyone said CIG were scammers.

Honestly, every other forum and social media platform has people calling it a scam by that name.

I don't want to editorialize too much here, but so far, to be pedantic, I would argue it's technically not a "scam" for the product that they already have - especially since we've seen literal scams this past year. not to mention some NFT games still exist. cough

But for $700 million and approximately a decade of development, critics can possibly call it a waste, say it's dragging behind, observe the feature creep, point out it's unoptimized, break the tutorial like I did the other night, call out locust waves of bugs...

Anyway, I think I'm personally going to dig my heels a bit more into this game now that they're claiming to commit to 1.0 - I have an ancient $40 ship from 2016 which means I have access to the game. I feel like a lot of people ask, "How's Star Citizen?" and very few people actually have an answer. Wish me luck (and maybe send me 16GB more RAM, holy performance slog).

It's not by chance that the usually the people making a "big of a fuss" about these things aren't actual players of the game lol

They haven't even fired up the game to actually experienced and play what's available and get a grasp of how mechanics are integrated, present and future it's not a surprise how they aren't able to see the big picture.

You can rest assure that the work and detail they keep putting on planets, ships, cargo hauling, trading, mining, salvaging, flying, dogfighting, first person shooting, character creator and every other mechanic will be given to the science aspect of the game.

And that they've built an engine that has detail for the first-person gameplay all the way to little coin level:

While being able to render entire fully detailed planets:

So they literally can have us finding a needle in a haystack of needles if they want.
