Digital River has been around for years; maybe just no one was purchasing anything for them to receive payment on.

    It's like-

    my bank account is zero!

    Did you make a deposit?

    Well no, but still.

We already have a BETTER thread on this TOPIC. "SYSTEM" is behaving badly. Someone pull the plug on "System" and it's foolishness!

You really should make the effort to put a name to "System"

THe Quality of this site is a direct reflection of "SYSTEM's" incompetence.

Embers Adrift is an excellent game, I have been playing it for two years and have had a great time.

I hope this will give more of you the chance to try it (and prove the trolls wrong).

    Ouch.

My first instinct was that Embers Adrift would have probably done something to deserved it, but based on quick Google News search it looks like Digital River has done the same to multiple customers.

I hope everything works out for them. As a small business owner myself, I understand the grind and challenges. I wish them the best. I also plan on revisiting the game. I hope others do as well.

I do think they should’ve chose steam when they originally released the game. I honestly feel they’d have a much larger player base.

I think it was Turbine that used to use Digital River and I constantly had issues with payments not going through with them.

I gave the game about 10-12 hours, but never got hooked enough to want to continue. I honestly didn't mind the slower pace and the relatively low fantasy setting. It just got to the point where I knew that, to progress, I'd have to dedicate my play sessions to finding and traveling with a group and that's not something I can do these days.

I may jump back in from time to time to solo grind and explore, but that's not something that will keep the lights on.

a indie studio made a mmo with extremely slow combet and a heavy reliance on groups then thought it would be a great idea to release it in their own website AND make it p2p.

It has carved out it's modest space and endured which is more than some MMORPG attempts have managed. Some credit is due for that alone.

And it worked sufficiently for them to endure, up until Digital River decided to be problematic for them. That's more success for them than most expected.

I don't see much room for critique on Stormhaven Studios here.

No need to criticize what they did in terms of their game. And they are very supportive and passionate about their game and community and I wish more studios would be. You are referencing their business decisions and that has nothing to do with what Digital River is being accused of. And apparently its not just Stormhaven.

Yep, just checked, here's what AI says, so Stormhaven is not alone

Digital River, a US-based e-commerce company that handles online payments for software developers, has been delaying payments to merchants since midsummer 2024. Some say that Digital River has no intention of making payments and may be entering a liquidation process.

I wonder how many companies they process payments for. This could be far reaching even outside of gaming.

None of that is an issue.

Think the game’s issues start with how players are dumped into the world on a path and you fight bunnies and deer to start. That sets the tone right there. Not a good one in my opinion. :s

I think you could do a "forced grouping"/"grouping heavily encouraged" MMO in the current era, but you're going to have to build the game around making drop in/drop out grouping really smooth and easy to do. The player should have to make explicit setting choices that are not the default setup in order to even solo. That means by default when you log on you're getting dropped into a group. If that's blowing your mind as to how that would work there's plenty of games that already do this. Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2, Darktide and Vermintide before it. Left 4 Dead. No MMO does it that I'm aware of but that doesn't mean it can't be done. You'd have to design from the ground up around it. No way you're bolting it on to WoW and have it make any sense.

The old school days of sitting on the zone edge begging for a group are over. Only a small niche of the market will tolerate that anymore. Unfortunately this game is trying the old school method and getting the expected niche response.

I wish them the best but I think there's a better way forward. Someone needs to look at the problem from a different angle and quit trying the same old solutions from the past.

Imagine, through the power of the Internet, you could be sharing INFORMATION instead of weakly begging and lamenting your incompetence.

Even a r3Tard3d AI can find the answer:
Digital River has over 2,100 global brand partners across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Digital River is a global commerce enabler that offers electronic commerce solutions, including payment solutions, marketing, business infrastructure, and order management. The company has offices across the U.S., Asia, Europe, and South America, and is headquartered in Minneapolis.

If I wanted to look it up I could have but that was not the point. It was rhetorical.

And imagine, through the power of the Internet, you could have made a nice informational post instead of insulting someone you do not know.

Well I am not the one who spelled banned words and insults with numbers to get around textual flags so there is that.

Funny part is you made my rhetorical point for me so thank you. In this context the rhetorical point it utilized to further the conversation by making people be curious and wonder about what the answer could be. And maybe they will go research it. So again thank you.

Even in this day and age there is something nice about being part of a village of players, where people are known. In most MMO's outside of your guild you are a nobody, but here it just feels different.

Is difficult to explain but you run a dungeon with a group, end up on people's friend lists, then get invites when they see that you log in again. And its real dungeoning, not just a race to the loot chest at the end.

Anyway, its entirely free for now, and a small download, since it is the one successful HDRP Unity engine MMO on the market (Unity builds are relatively small), so if you want to try some old school dungeoning just jump in and say yes when someone is looking to fill a group.

There is actually an NPC nearby on that path that directs you to others nearby where you get your first quests of several in the starting region. So right from the get go it's not just fighting bunnies and deer. You're selling it a bit short.
