    I think one of the issues is for many we know what to expect with phrases like pre-alpha, alpha, beta, etc... but early access can be anything. I have played games where early access was so far along its like "what are we really doing to test?" but also I have experienced early access where the game barely runs. I think community expectations of what is wanted/desired/acceptable/requested in early access and what some devs release is a very big difference.

    That's what Kickstarter is for. Much as I hate Kickstarter, at least it's more honest about the fact that you are donating, not buying a product.
