So, my early impressions were spot on. Combat's good, the skill tree is good, choices aren't up there with Origins but they're better than 2 and Inquisition. The art and tone are more Kingdoms of Amalur than they are Dragon Age and I'm honestly fine with that. It plays smooth, the UI is strong, and the performance/bugs are polished to a mirror shine.

Honestly, if the game were named Kingdoms of Amalur 2, people would be more openly hyped about it.
Well, I am not fine with that. Because this game is Called Dragon Age: Veilguard and not Kingdoms of Amalur 2.

So you hit the nail on the head right there.

When you build a franchise over so many years, which many people have grown fond of and then suddenly change it into something completely unrecognizable. Then expect to be called out on it!

The world design is gorgeous in this game. The character design is childish and disappointing and the combat is neutered to the point you don't have to think much anymore beyond smashing buttons with companions being immortal/unkillable.

I could maybe look beyond all that, if the Story was still dark and gritty, with excellent dialogue and writing... like we were used to with Bioware and the previous Dragon Age games.

But no..... it's not. It's the worst part of the game I cannot look beyond nor forgive them for it, without insulting my own intelligence and lower my IQ by at least 150 points.

"A boat approaches the shore of a town we are to investigate. Companion A says: "Where is everyone?" .... building suspense....  Then Companion 2 suddenly says: "Oh no, normally there people here, standing in those stalls, selling wares like food, drinks and clothes!".

Seriously! No sh!t sherlock! I did not know that in those abandoned peddler stalls, there are normally people standing in there selling stuff!  Who would have thought that?

"Char 1: Char 1 says you should eat the fruit before it spoils... Char 2: No I like cookies better.... Char 1: Everyone likes the cookies better!.... Char 2: I will eat the fruit....."

That is literally happening and the level of writing in this game. A level of writing you expect in a Children's book aimed at very young toddlers!  As even my son, when he reached the age of 4, didn't need to be explained that kind of stuff anymore.

I am sorry, but this is just infuriating and beyond insulting, to have that level of childish writing in a game with a 18+ mature rating!

Having NPC companions, who are supposed to be adults, constantly bickering like annoying toddlers in the background, revealing all plot points in the game and continuously lecturing me and killing any suspense!

    EDIT:
Cohh just put up his Early thoughts video and pretty much echoes what I wrote above:

I could play some Dragon Age. Not Veilguard, but some better games.

It is sitting at a Mostly Positive rating on Steam with almost 4,000 reviews. Sounds in line with the 79 to 80 score it seems to be at. I am more than fine with that score for a game. I think some people are getting a little too granular and judgy. Seems weird to me.
    Play the game or not.
That is really the only two options that matter.
Pick one and lean into it.

lol... you're being too impatient, the general population on metacritic cant even vote yet.

Another thing there not lots of people actually playing according to steam unless you think 34k people online is good?

Havent fact checked anything but I am reading it has had at peak 70k players......that's really not good tbh and tells me it's leaning towards being a huge flop.
Being impatient would mean I bought the game and am playing it. I have not.
I enjoyed the other Dragon Age games, my favorite being DA:I
I enjoyed the Mass Effect games including Andromeda, which was destroyed at launch but now sits at Mostly Positive on Steam and I found it a fun game.
This game looks better than Andromeda so the 7 to 8 score is in line with the expectation I have with the game.
By the time I get through other games on my list it will be, maybe, March or April next year, it will be patched and ready for me to dive in.
    I look forward to it.
Matters not to me what anyone else thinks about it.

A mature outlook on games dismisses that argument entirely. An actually mature gamer can enjoy games like Pokemon and Mario  (games for younger audiences) AND darker games with more "mature themes." Dismissing games because they're cartoony is immature.

I think you completely missed the context of my post and got too defensive here. If you think and perhaps even enjoy/love the game then great for you, there's nothing wrong with that and I wasn't implying any otherwise.

The point is those scores are too early right now to actually mean anything when it comes to the fact of.... is it a  big hit or a huge flop?

DA:VG is getting a Mostly Positive on Steam which for me raises questions, but good titles sometimes only get a MP. The more I read about the game, the more it seems to me that the game would have been better off as the first in a new serries. They do seem to have painted the game with a DA veneer just to get more hype.

I think everyone needs to wait awhile for the dust to settle before claiming victory one way or another.  However, 70k peak users on Steam is not a good sign no matter how hard you want to cope and hand wave away it's significance.

I see alot of people like the game and alot of people dont, one does have to question some of the negativity, becuase some of the negative things I have read reek more of joning in on the negativity without having played the game.

they complaints do seem to resemble the complaints that we hear when a popular band puts out new music but the music isnt the same as thier previous works, happens with alot of metal and punk bands, who sometimes become a little more comercial when the start tasting popularity, plus age out of the more aggressive style

then you have the bands that stay the same, you get all the negativity saying how the band never changed thus every album sounded the same

so dragon age changed to include a larger audience....its the nature of things, get over it

I haven't played it but I heard that there comes a point where you can choose for your character to be trans and if you don't pick trans it locks you out of one of the "good" endings.  They also literally use the word Trans in the game with the dialog.

I agree we need to wait and see yet before we know for certain where the game lies. But I don't think anyone should see this as a victory one way or another; to me nothing that divides the gaming community should be seen in that light. Also if it is a poor game, no player wins we all loose.

I agree It's not good to have bad AAA games for players. It's good that when we have them we can identify them and pass the toll to the companies.

Si it can be "good" if it implies that studios that cheat players go bankrupt and send a moral hazard message to the rest.

Perhaps you are right, Western context is lost on me. Apologies.

The side that matters to me is, is the game fun for me? Maybe and hopefully.
MetaCritic users have blasted it. Woke, Trans and so on. (I think MetaCritic is a joke, do you even have to have played a game to post a review of it?)
The reviews on Steam from actual players is mostly positive as they are when I checked on both my Xbox and PS5.
I see another post citing the 'only' 70,000 players on Steam, but the game is also on consoles, and you can play on PC without Steam.
I think you are right that it is too early to tell. In general, but for me it looks to be what I was expecting and that is a positive for me. Hopefully I will like it when I dig into it sometime next year.

The Critic Reviews are from gaming journalists who have to think about their jobs, the User Scores are from anyone who wants to post one.

I do recon in Steam Reviews by players when I make a decision to buy but not those User Scores. My thinking is that players on Steam are not totally anonymous, they have a Steam "presence" if you will. As far as I know posters of User Scores for MC just create an account to post Scores so that is very dubious to my mind.

When it comes to the current players I think that is important in relation to how many people have bought the game on Steam (it only came out on Thursday) are they still playing it? I thought Steam would show total purchases, but could not see it? There is a wildly varying figure of "Owner Estimations" surely Steam should know the exact number?

Anyway that varies from 103K to 211K, I must say that is so divergent I would not put any trust in those figures.

    https://steamdb.info/app/1845910/charts/

This shows peak numbers and from a rough estimate of different time zones you can estimate the number of purchases. Of course that does not take into account the number who may have returned the game before the two hour mark.

Steam numbers are an indication of how well the game is doing overall.  Most people are probably playing it on consoles but even if we double the numbers for each console, which I believe is how it normally goes when comparing Steam to XBox and PS5, that's around another 300k.  Combined with Steam, it's only about 350-400k total.  That's not great for a AAA game that cost as much as DAV and the expectations for sales.  I don't think it will flop like Concord or Suicide Squad but I also don't believe it's going to come anywhere near what it needed to make it profitable.  My guess is less than 500k total sales.  We're going to see some more job losses at Bioware in the next few months if I'm right.

Not sure.  I’m still puzzled by the lopsided review breakdown between PS5 (over 50 when I looked), XBOX (6 I think) and PC (20 something).

From the design choices, graphics and who they gave keys to maybe they really think PS5 is their target audience.

Steam is only one of the PC homes though right? Also Epic and EA launcher?
So three PC launchers, Xbox and PS5 that is a good size pool to draw numbers from but not sure what those numbers are.
Honestly does it matter? Seems to be a decent seller and we have no idea what it cost to make so how do we know what the ROI is to determine the sales numbers they were aiming for that return?

It looked like a console game from the first we saw of it.

Also it had to be expensive to make it took ages, it was restarted a few times and if I remember aright was not strictly solo to begin with. But I still think it will make a profit, the question is how good?

There's an article (can't remember where) that talks about the game being made as a multi-player game and a "games as a service" game. Someone stepped down (bad with names) and they had asked another person to take over. The person who took over looked over everything and then had conversations with "the powers that be" and eventually they pulled everything back to be a single player game.

I imagine that added time, energy and money.

In any case, I gave them some money last night and I'm enjoying it. I'm certainly having more fun than I did in Inquisition (so far) Scott :D

I find the low steamcharts numbers to reflect the hype level among pc players, its a huge difference compared to dragon age inquisition that everyone seemed to love at launch where the hype level dropped depending on how long people got stuck in hinterlands.

Listening to fextralife review its kind of what i expected. He has some positive things to say but overall it leans to slightly negative. My interpretation is that its an rpg lite primarily intended for the console crowd,

    What does that mean exactly?
