After a controversial primary expansion, the 7.1 patch has a lot to live up to--and in some ways, it excels. But it may not be enough to fix the damage, says Victoria.

It's enough for me! The patch was really fun and I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the role quests that is coming in January.

Some of the new features, like the glamour dresser outfit consolidation need some work though. It's a lot of clicks and I'm not sure I want to devote hours of time so I can get more space in the glam dresser.

    'Steps up in gameplay'.

Lmao what? The same, boring 2-pack 1-boss routine like usual?
Seeing my bland rotation not even change? THe same reskinned 'gear but bigger number' treadmill? Like usual?

I'm playing XIV, but don't even lie by claiming the 'gameplay' has stepped up.

I usually play the expansion and then quit for a year and come back. By then they have added substantial enough Main Scenario content to play through and keep me occupied for a month (maybe two), before I rinse and repeat a year after that and then it's time for the next expansion.

Every MMO suffers this, if you are not into endgame Raiding.

I guess I was one of the few that did enjoy the expansion and story.

We knew the Warrior of Light story arc was over (regrettibly, but I don't blame the devs for wanting to do something new after all those years) and went into Dawntrail with zero expectations and fresh perspective.

I'm honestly not sure why I keep hearing that the writing was better in this patch's MSQ.

We got a funeral for an underdeveloped character from Dawntrail, Koana was able to come to terms with decades of cultural alienation in an offscreen cutscene petting a buffalo, and an explanation of where the cute lizard kid came from can best be summed up as an anime obsession story.

Was it paced better? Sure. Was the actual writing better? Hell no. In fact, id argue that this was one of the worst stories in the game from an actual narrative standpoint.

Talk about cringe. Who the heck approved this? Someone in the dev team reviewed the plot, read "I really want in the commander's pants", and gave it a thumbs up?

    Yikes.

I'm still waiting for the space exploration content, i'm not sure when that'll be ready or at what patch.

Hopefully it doesn't suffer the same fate Island Sanctuary did and get delayed to a future expansion..... :(

I didn’t bother finishing MSQ past the western town and I’ve no plans to return.

FFXIV’s scenario directors or higher ups have been hampering the writers with rigid, level-capped story beats; Big plot shift must happen at level X4, big twist coming at level X8. We’ve abandoned the major plot premise 1/3 of the way into the expansion for a new big bad two times in a row now. I found it particularly egregious to build up a certain someone as an all powerful entity for 10 years and then relegate him to first dungeon boss status.

I found it time to move on to something that isn’t poorly attempting to replicate its prior success with a copy paste formula, something with a little more flexibility in the writing.
