The PoE setting always felt to me like it was trying too hard to be different. I'm perfectly happy in a Tolkienesque vanilla D&D setting. (In fact, even the overabundance of Tieflings in BG3 had me rolling my eyes a bit.)

I also hate most first-person games. I don't like being unable to see my character (what's the point of customization and awesome loot if you can't see any of it?), and sometimes the perspective makes me physically ill.

Despite all of this, I'm looking forward to Avowed for some reason. I guess it just ticks so many of my other boxes that I'm hoping the big turn-offs won't bother me too much.

Definitely keeping an eye on this one, i read somewhere else that there is element of Parkour in the exploration, did you get much chance just to run around and explore?

Also just in case anyone besides me was unsure Crunchy combat does not mean it contains peanuts. :)

What does "crunchy" mean in RPG?

Crunchy games use numbers to model the in-game world. They have a robust rules structure underlying play which allows a great variety of penalties, bonuses, spells, abilities, combat maneuvers, you name it.

I did some exploration, but since our time with this demo was limited, I wanted to focus on the meat and potatoes of the experience, which was the story in the first two hours or so.

That said, I found myself exploring quite a bit, and the parkour elements were definitely thrown in there along the way - though it's less parkour in my experience and more just first person platforming. But puzzles and locations later in the game might have a bit more parkour-y elements to them beyond jumping from one ledge to another to get to a higher spot.

There was one where in order to get into a decrepit shack with a chest inside, I had to climb on a ridge above the building, jump down onto the roof and destroy it with my axe since the windows and door were both barred. So that's a bit of what a more complex parkour puzzle was like.

I love the Pillars of Eternity universe already so thats an added plus for this game. Games Pass makes it a no brainer to try.

Thanks for the heads up! I had kind of lost track of this title with all the others i am keeping an eye on.

From what you described it sounds very promising for exploration which is a big draw at least for me.

From the looks of things 2025 is going to really increase the games i have in my backlog.

Those graphics look really outdated. I am not that guy, but they do. It is most likely going to be nice aesthetically, but technically ... yeah.

Also, the whole premise of Avowed(I really hate that name btw) reminds me heavily of Greedfall. The more you observe ...

I really like Eora(setting of Pillars etc), but idk honestly.
