Initial Review of D&L

KilimKilim Member Posts: 546

1st of all, I would like to state that I have been playing various
MMORPG in various states, from Closed Beta, Open Beta and their Retail
versions.

So I am basing 1st impressions of D&L by comparing it to other MMORPG I have been in.

I did start the game as a Male Human of the Dark Faction.

* What you like? dislike?

It is NOT noob friendly.

From the beginning of the game there is no ease of play.

Most MMORPG has a decent learning curve from the beginning.

The initial 1st few hours/levels is what introduces a player to the game and that aspect is not there.

What happens is you create a character, be placed in your starter area and thats it.

You are like a mushroom that just spawned in some unknown land with no idea of your surroundings.

I consider myself a veteran in MMORPG's and the world just feels empty to me.

I don't expect to have my hand held in ANY game, but the simplest basics should be at hand.

The game just feels like a big world with alot of empty space.

* What you feel should be added/removed?

This topic would be exteremely long if I fully post everything but I will try to make it short.

A simple tutorial or anything to help start a new player in-game is a must in a game of this level.

NPC's that does other things than say "Hello <playername>"

Improve Graphics/Sound/Control (Will add more in section below)

There is just too much to put in this section and I am sure many has
already posted what I would have redundantly post here anyways.

* Differences/similarities to SoG? (If you have played SoG)

So far, D&L feels like SoG with some slightly improved on graphics and UI.

* How would you rate its:
(from a scale of 1-10, 1 being the worst and 10 being the best)

Graphics: 2/10

The graphics could have been good if it is still the year 2000 or later.

In essence it is sub-par to what we have and can do now in the industry.

I had the game in its highest and best settings and was unimpressed at all.

Worst part is, the FPS of the game is horrendous in any game settings and even if I am in an empty area with no one around.

Sound: 3/10

Repetitive.

That is the one word I can say about it.

It doesn't bring anything new to the genre.

this was the highest score I gave when I 1st reviewed SoG and now that it is in D&L, I am just unimpressed.

Quests/RP/NPCs/Community: 2/10

Just like in SoG, I had a hard time trying to find any Quest or worthwhile NPC.

I did see an AD say soemthing in the in-game chat but otherwise the
Barony chat was empty and void of any communication in the Dark/Human
town I started in.

Performance/Lag/Connectivity: 2/10

I personally had no issues logging into the game.

But many have in the 1st 24 hours.

OK, will put into consideration that most MMORPG have a hectic launch
but I have played a few that actually had a better performance during
the launch week.

Maybe I was lucky that I did not experience any crashes at all, but I also forced myself to play for an hour at a time.

The FPS I was receiving was just not good.

In an empty area I would get an FPS as low as 3 to as high as 15.

It would constantly fluctuate and soemhow I was not able to get an FPS above 15.

Movement was choppy and sluggish.

Customer Service: 1/10

Like I stated above, I did notice an AD post something in the in-game chat while I was online.

But I am grading this based on how else they have dealt with their customers as can be noted in the Official Forums.

Piss poor communication is possibly going to be the downfall of this game if nothing else fails it.

UI: 3/10

UI is just like SoG but with some minor changes.

It still feels clunky and outdated.

I wonder if you can even customize it?

I know most MMORPG now adays allow modders to have the ability to make Custom UI for the community.

I was looking inside the game folder and really not sure if there are any files that would make this option viable.

If it is not made available in the future that will be 1 more point removed for this grade.

This is because there are so many skillful players out there that would make exceptionally great mods for the community.

Also, what is up with the MANY misspelled words in-game?

Combat: 2/10

Combat is just like SoG all over again.

Boring and a big yawn.

Animations for combat is also not impressive but more like a disappointment liek everythign else.

Customization: 2/10

2 of the character customizations are not available at this time.

I belive it is the Eye and Skin options.

The slider is there but nothing changes.

Of the available options, the customization is very limited.

Characters looks very bland and the graphics for it is very dated looking.

Like I stated before in the graphics section, if this was made in 2000 or later it would have been ok.

Overall: 2/10

I really wanted and actually hoped this game would make a difference in
the current less than quality market in todays MMORPG Genre.

But unfortunately it has become a part of the ever saturated genre with a less than quality product as this.

D&L may have been decent if it was released a few years ago.

But todays standards have been raised by the games that has been
released and will be released and what the current consumers expect
from their product.

There are MANY parts of this game that are currently not working and many bugs to be fixed.

There are also MANY parts in the game that are just spelled wrong.

It would be ok if it is just 1 or 2 here and there but it is rampant EVERYWHERE.

Please let us not give the following excuses for it:
They are a small team.

They are French and/or talk in a different language.

Other excuse you may want to add.
The point is, you, the consumer has paid X Amount of Cash and should have a quality product for what you paid for.

All the basic issues should have not been there and should have not made it pass QUality Control, if they have any.
If you do not like SoG, expect to not like D&L.

I must say, I am just happy I had my refund months ago and that it is
unfortunate that the game is exactly what we have said it would be.

Soemthing that is incomplete and would have been decent a few years ago but not upto par with todays industry standards.

My PC Specs while in-game:

Asus P4S8X Rev 1.03; 1005 Rel. BIOS

Why is no one mentioning that not one thing, one single solitary thing, they promised at launch is there? Nothing they promised is there.

This game is now a flop. SOG was bad, but at least a few months ago we had the hope that it was only some archaic alpha version of DNL. Now we know it wasn't.

I'm not a pioneer (good thing I listened to that little bird on my shoulder that told me not to preorder!), but I'm hearing there's no quests, no dungeons, crappy combat animations, a totally screwy trivial loot system that makes it so a level 2 gets no xp from a level 1 kill, very few items. Basically no content.

I didn't like SOG. I know for a fact I won't like DNL. You what it seems like to me? It seems like a professionally developed landscaping engine was bought and used by a bunch of amateurs who don't know how to create a good mmorpg. Really. It's like an amateur attempt. The only thing it has going for it is it's beautiful landscape, and I'm pretty sure I heard that the landscape is the only part of the game NOT created by them! Figures huh.

Now I'm just taking bets on how long this game survives before it's doors are shut permanently. There's no way it will survive in this bloated mmorpg market. Not without MASSIVE recoding.

Don't read the FAQ about this game. It's just a dream. The reality of the game is a totally different story.

How long did it take for Mourning to finally die?

    Sorry.
I tought we covered that in another thread I started right after SoG launched.
Maybe we can start a new thread like it and name it soemthing like: "List of promises broken about D&L"

Mourning keeps popping up like a disease that just won't go away lol.
At this time, I am not sure which is worst: D&L vs Mourning

Sorry, you are definitely wrong. Even the landscape looks like a kindergardener threw it together.
  • NabatamNabatam Member Posts: 43
Indeed... I keep on reading posts where people say the landscapes are beautiful, and I just don't see it.

I have a very decent rig and at the highest settings I still think the landscapes are mediocre at best. I understand there has to be some sort of compromise to achieve long viewing distances and a seamless world, yet the results are subpar IMHO.

I won't even go to the characters themselves or the horrid combat animations...

I decided to start a Broken Promises thread, which Omega6 was gracious enough to contribute to and Kilim linked to his older, original thread that faithfully covered much of the significant information.

It lasted about an hour before they locked due to something like fighting, or some such nonsense...

They said they would have a tutorial at release... Guess that's another of their broken promises. Not that I care much...

Actually, the chaos that is happening now is the tutorial.  If this doesn't teach you about the game, no tutorial ever will.

Oh man... I hadn't even thought of that.
You know, it'll be a good indicator if it's more about the money that swaps hands than the game itself .

I do look forward to mmorpg.com's review as I like their often imparticial and not overly enthusiastic reviewing styles.

    Will be very interesting indeed...

Personally, I lost interest in this game with SoG. It has been entertaing to watch the amateurish behaviour and absolute lack of any business or social skills on the dev's part. And seeing the fanbois try to stand there ground when confronted by the plain and simple truth of this game being a POS by Zorbane and and others is an unbelievable riot. I can't believe anyone would even let this game on their hard drive, much less play it. As for reviewing it, the best thing MMORPG.COM could do concerning this game is remove it from their list and never associate with anything this company puts out again. Just my point of view. Carry on.

They can't do that! That would mean taking out the forums, and then where would we all get together and laugh at this mess?

AFAIK There has ONLY been ONE MMORPG that has been removed from MMORPG.Com.
And it even has the LONGEST Thread in the MMORPG.com forums.

Anyone know which MMORPG I am talking about?
I think D&L is about to steal its throne very soon ...

Will not happen unless Farlan starts making meaningless legal threats & demands account information from mmorpg.com. Then again lets see if Farlan can handle their own game accounts: being able to cancel/start subscriptions & allow refunds.

Being a crappy game is not enough for mmorpg.com to remove it. (There are even games in the game-list that have been cancelled long since but are still there).

I dont think it will be removed because something, some kind of code that renders graphics and a landscape has been released.

Prepare for Armageddon in two days.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Let us "mourn" for Deceit and Lie Kilim not compare it to some other games that people have "mourned" for in the past. Is that subtle enough
