What did this reviewer think about the interface? I thought it sucked. It was in beta when I played so maybe it is better now. What I saw was just alot of plain text, some of it on top of the other, it was dreadfull, extremely unplolished, but like I said it was beta, but beta for a game that had already been out for a year in the east. I also had problems with the character controls and was disappointed with the graphics. The graphics reminded me of Anarchy Onlines poor old engine. Lot's of dirt outside. Not much else to look at.
Anyhoo, I was very excited about this game, until I played it. I'll stick with Eve and Wow myself.

The interface wasn't bad. Personally, I'm one of those who wants all the extensive, in-depth information that RF Online's various menus and interfaces provide. My problem was that the controls were clunky.
The graphics are a matter of prefernce, as I stated above. Personally, I love anime graphics, and these were extremely well done in that style. If you don't like anime styled graphics, you obviously wouldn't agree with my assessment of the graphics. Also, there was a LOT of detail to the world, if you had the various settings turned on (as I did). If you have a real high end system, you could set the view distance to a really ridiculous number and see even more on screen at once.
As I stated though, this game is really for a niche. Those who love anime styled characters AND RvR conflict that has no purpose (as winning the mines for the RvR really isn't a reward). If that is your thing, go and enjoy; if it's not, I recommend sticking with your current game(s).
I have enjoyed reading this thread for 2 reasons. The review reinforced my own opinions. I contemplated buying it but soon realised that RF online is a sub standard game little better than WOW. I should not comment on the scoring as I have not played RF but my own subjective view is that the scores the reviewer gave were probably too generous. however the thread has developed.
More interesting has been the intense scrutiny of the style of the journalism. I can only assume the reviewer dumbed it down to make it easier for young people to grasp the key points.
The thread has now developed to a higher echelon (correcting the spelling in this edit..tut tut..must have wrote it in haste) of reviewing partly due to its openness. So thank you for an honest and simple review and thank you mmorg.com for a very good format for fans to dissect and impart information.

Thank you very much. You said exactly what I had hoped, which was "honest". Honesty what I was going for when I wrote this review.
I didn't really "dumb it down", but I did try and stick to the basics, and write it in such a way to allow everyone to fully grasp the majority of the game and my experiences.
You're kidding me right? You belive this game has no comparison in graphics. This game is what other games should look up to, and all other games out there right now should be ashamed of themselves because of the graphics in this game? Bloody hell man. I hope you were joking.
For the most part i agree with nufan. I read the reviews and read what others are saying. I've tried the game for a bit. Then i read this review...for the most part its acurrate however i do feel that the score did not actually match the review. Just to give you an idea of why you state this in the closing statement
"The community in general is abysmal, it’s very linear and repetitive, and generally speaking, it’s not a lot of fun right now."
You say this about the game but then it gets a score of 7.6? The main reason for this is the score for graphics and sound were really high as opposed to most other things which were mostly 6, this distorts the actual grade which by the looks of it should be 6. something. (I am giving the writter the benifit of the doubt in thinking he just used the scoring chart and nothing else).
From a journalistic point of view i actually wouldn't blame the writter but the editor in charge for this. This is because even though there are various writters with different opinions, there should still be some standard that the editor would uphold. They should have read the article and seen the scoring and adjusted it esspecially when scoring is based on a slightly skewed system that might not reflect the feelings of the written article properly.
One could argue the communty scored it the same but if you check out the score you see thats its only 250 votes most of which are from people that give it max score on everything and for the most part are fans and/or were high hopefuls for the game.
In the end it all depends on how much mmorpg.com staff wants people to read an article or review on their site and trust their opinions or comments.
I have played this game quite extensively, since my last post of interest from the review. There are some cool ideas and quite a few things i dont like.First up i am a stickler on sub par interfaces.I didn't find the interface too bad,but it follows other asian games with a horrible chat system.I don't want to get into the specifics of it ,because its just slow and cumbersome and very easy to mess up./map /Map Map only one works.
I didn't know anythiong about updates when i played, but have to agree that the game must have been very small in its original pay form.
When i see people comment on graphics i always kringe.I don't think people actually know how graphics are done and what really constitutes good. There are things such as particle effects and animated textures, static meshes ,polygons and then how each thing that you see is done.Graphics in this game are nothing special whatsoever, but they are alright.
It is really hard to put into lamens terms,so you kinda have to work with a game engine to get a feel for it all.Gt interactive or epic games as you will released the unreal engine for free with all its games[amazing offer].Alot of people have worked with this engine and know how good it can be.
You can of course argue that ,it doesn't matter how it's done all you care about is how it looks. The problem is that a trained eye sees different things than you do and might not see the graphics as being good.Things like TEARS in the world from poorly aligned meshes.Textures on everything in the game world that look pastel. There is no depth or grainy realism to them. They tend to look more 2d than 3d.Lighting is another thing. It's a very simple effect to add to a game world but making it look realistic to a trained eye is not easy.
There are just so many things that go into graphics its not funny.Anyone with a graphics engine can make a texture ,but making a very good one is alot of work.Caronas are an effect that is used in things like sun rays or glare off light fixtures, this can be done very well or bad .[average person might think nothing of it or even notice it][lightboxes is another term used in lighting]
There is the SKY.A person who knows how they do it,will know if its very well done or merely a cheap texture that moves across the sky.Did you know that its really not even a sky ..lol.Its just a texture effect put onto the side of a wall/mesh as you will. There are effects that game engines use to simulate things like smoke that can be used to say simulate a cloud in the game world but not often do you see this.
To sum it up....pretty much everything you see with any colour is done using textures, be it animated or layered or simple ones.Sound can add alot to a texture ,like a crackling fire sound for lava or a spalshing sound for water.
There is of course the obvious that anyone can see the hard work put into the different meshes in the game world.Square boxes or simple rounded pillars or perhaps alot of work was done and several meshes were used in making one that looks amazing.
If a game uses hi-resolution textures, then its a pretty good bet the game will look alot more realistic. This all leads back to weather or not the texture set used in the game was cheap or very well done.Alot of hi res animated textures can really strain even a great system.I havn't even touched half of what goes on in graphics ,so its just food for thought before you judge a games graphics.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I Liked The Review. If I Can Rate It I Give It A 9.0/10.
Some Add-Ons If I May:
1. The Community Depends On The Game, In Every RFO There Are Different People Playing And Came From Various Locations, In The Fact That The Review Just Focused On One RFO Site, I Guess The Judging Should Be Less And Not To The Extent. Besides MMORPG.com Is A Site Full Of Games, And In Each Game, MMORPG.com Provides Various Official Links. And Considering The Other Links Community. The Review Regarding The Communiy Was Great Since The Reviewer Added The Forum Boards Of The Game, It Might Also Happen That The Game Has iRC Network And Ventrillo Servers That Should Also Be Added.
2. If Revising Of The Review Is Considered, Alas You Can Revise The Things From The Time You Played To The Present Where Some UpDates Added Important Additions To The Game. Making It A Lot Newer Than The Testing And Older Phases/Versions.
Thats' All.
Currently Playing: Classic Games: Luxor, Cool Pool 2, Chicken Invaders 2, And Hang-A-Roo 2. OnLine Games: Dark Space OnLine. Looking Forward For: The Sword Of The New World: Granado Espada OnLine. Coming Soon: I'll Play Games If My RAM Is Not AnyMore 246MB.

Graphics: 10 ...
