Earth and Beyond. Saw a 10 day free trial and downloaded it. Didn't even know that it was a mmo or what a mmo even was. Have played a mmo every day since. Plus got my buddy hooked.
There are only 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't
LOL, as I was reading the replies here , I just KNEW I would have one that most would not remember.. looks like there is one at least :P yep, my first mmo was The Realm.. where I first made my online friends and have memories that will last forever .
Originally posted by Infliction The Realm... Ahh to be 10 years old playing MMORPGs. BUT of course EQ eventually came along and snatched away a big chunk of the playerbase, and my shitty comp in all its dialup internet glory couldn't handle EQ, and I'd never tried/heard of UO back then.
I played a bunch of MUDs in the 80s and into the 90s. And even on to today. Loved the whole feel of having a bunch of people to play with.
Cant remember which one it was... But one of the first MUDs I played, I remember grouping up with someone. I followed him onto this raft, we crossed an ocean, and came upon a very cold wintery place up north. We killed a few reindeer, then came across the village of short elves. My hunting buddy took out a needle and starting stabbing them all. These poor defenseless toy makers, I gasped in horror! I said "You muderer! Your killing Santa's elves!". I ran, not wanting to contribute to this travesty. Well, he died about 1 min after I ran. He sent me a tell saying "you friggin dope.. this is a MUD! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO KILL MOBS!". To which I replied "screw you elf killer!". Oh good times!!!! I can still remember the blaring green screen in the VMS/VAX lab I was using at the time lol.
"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
~everyquest~ when it first came out i remember buying all ov the upgrad's that you could at that time, i became very very good on it, i was having a great time, until one day i let my little brother on and he went ninja looting!
so i was banned =( but thats still my first and favour'd MMO
I consider my first MMO to be GemStone III. It was text based but with over 2000 people playing in the same world at the same time and more roleplaying in it's one server than every WoW server combined it definately fit the description of an MMORPG.
Good times...too bad I don't have the patience for text based games anymore.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
My first mmo was EQOA for the PS2 over 3 years ago. Read about it in a playstation magazine during it's beta stages, have been hooked on MMO's ever since.
My first was DAOC. I bought it back in Sept. of 2002. I had the same emotional feelings as you did taking my first steps into your first MMO world. Everything was new and undiscovered. Even learning the group make ups and class archetypes were an adventure. I loved it.
Now I am numb the same way you are when I start a new MMO. I've learned that the less linear the game and more social it is the better the game is. But if your in a good community and the game is well built, like WoW, you can play for the same reasons you first started playing MMO's.
My reasons for playing MMO's is to live in a virtual world with other real people and to live out my fantasy as being a Heroic Warrior with sword and shield or a powerful Mage with mastery over the elements. Of course another fantasy I have is to be a Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. I can find several games to live out my first fantasy, but the Jedi fantasy must remain dormant until another Star Wars game can offer a challenging way to earn Jedi and make them as powerful as they are meant to be.
I don't see online worlds as a place to compete, although I think certain settings would be nice for it. I instead see online worlds as a place to live a second life as you always wanted, hence why it's called a fantasy. Some classes are meant to be more powerful than others, which is the draw to them a lot of the time. Competition has destroyed a lot of what living in an online world is about. But anyways...
My first ever game was ROSE(Rush on Seven Episodes)online, when it was free. I liked it alot, i was a high lvl raider,a lvl 146, with my castle-gear, walking around killing cool monsters, like Tyrants(which give uniques more frequently). I heard that lots of people loved it just like me.It had good graphics, cartoon-like graphics. The game was then free and it closed down due to many hackers hacking in. I spent 5 months on it(not a very long time for some people)and i was totally addicted, waking up at around 4:00 in the morning to play it as my parents let me play for only 1 hr 30 mins per day. I also got caught sometimes in the morning and they scolded me like hell, just for the game i really liked....I'll rate ROSE-online as 90/100. But now that it closed down, you have to pay to play(p2p), which i cant as im only 12, i cant own a credit card...
I missed the game alot and i'm hoping to find another one just like roseon and that had newly-arrived which is free.

my first mmo was EARTH AND BEYOND, it is still my favorite, and i miss it dearly, frakking eagames sunset it, best space sci-fi mmo ever, it bred other games like eve and someother one i cant recall, but neither of those satisfy my space lust mmo like E&B did, hopefully there will be an emu of it someplace or it will be remade , if anyone knows if there is an emulated version of earth and beyond could you please email me?
My first MMO was Everquest. This was a few years ago, back when I was new to the MMO's. I hated Everquest. For some reason, it didn't appeal to me. Then I tryed out COH which I happily played for a while now. After I got to lvl 50 in COH, I sort of got bored because they didn't have much 2 offer for higher lvls (The CoV thing helped though, just not that much). I am currently playing WoW which I love but don't play that often (one week of having it and I only got to lvl 16) So thats it really for me.
Runescape (2001) was my first (still play abit)... Since runescape was my first all other games seem to have pathetic skill system and quests in comparison.
