Every since Pokemon gained fame all those years ago with Red and Blue(not to mention the card battling game) amongst the young community(actually you might be in your late teens or ealier twenties now) the idea of fighting others with your own unique creature(or card deck) that you have trained has become an idea that's been used more then once in animated TV shows, videogames, etc.
I think we all thought of seeing a MMORPG based off of Pokemon. The idea of going to the local professor and being able to pick from a selected few of Pokemon. Then training it to become much more then what it is, and through it; gaining the ability to capture other Pokemon. A massive multiplayer online world where you can challenge others. The game would to some extent be heavily based off of a PvP setup. Yet, because it's based off of challenges, you wouldn't see some of the annoyances that come with the usual PvP enivorment(ganking).
Badges! Unique Pokemon is one way for a trainer to show off. But the number of badges the trainer has also displays skill. You travel from gym to gym to engage the trainers there in order to win a new badge. Perhaps, each badge gives bonuses to yourself and your Pokemon. And of course your usual quest setup. I believe that dude, Ash, ran into Team Rocket and other villains along the way. Not to mention helping locals and other Pokemon to perform task. We can't leave the cooperative aspect of the genre out, right?
And you can't forget about the big competitions to see who's the number one trainer in the world at those giant arenas held every so often! I remember playing Pokemon handheld games in middle school. The most memoriable part about it was playing with friends to see who had the best setup and shouting Pikachu go! It was all about the competition. And I think the competition could be wholesome enough to attract PvE fans and serious enough for the hardcore PvPers.

There is also a 2d topdown Pokemon MMO being made, like the old gameboy games. It's on the forums somewhere, i'm just too lazy to find it
Monster Hunter > Pokemon
the reason?
These, these, these and these.
Um... Okay. I'll admit that Pokemon was a bit of a revolution to not only video games but card games as well. But what I won't admit, is that trying to keep it alive will work. Look, the fact is that the Pokemon series is based around the younger generation. Not only that but let's be honest here, some games are meant to die. Look, the concept of Pokemon was an excellent idea, no doubt. But, in order to keep something like that going, you need a newer foundation. Thus, Yu-Gi-Oh was born. When that came around that was the big thing. Big woop.
Okay, now look, where's Yu-Gi-Oh now? It died. Same concept it's audience grew up. If you're going to try and make a game with the same concept as Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow, you have to target everyone. Oh and by the way. The cartoon character started to get lame.
Okay, some of you guys have heard of MTG (Magic: The Gathering). I wont reccomend it to you but it seems to be a big rave. Uh... The only reason that it's still alive is because it targets a bigger crowd. It's business; plain and simple.
All I'm say when it comes down to it. To attract a good audience with a game as fun as Pokemon make something like... Dragon Warrior but with the Pokemon concept, maybe some violence, blood, gore, harsh language, realistic environment, etc.
At first the card game was played actually (At least in my area, which is pretty small as it is so that may mean something). Not sure where it went after that, I only saw it being played in small cases when it first appeared. But the idea of a pokemon MMO has been talked about alot anyway. The idea would actually make much sense and might be able to hit a majority of people, namely because alot of people who played the original red and blue still like the game itself. Of course the big problem is the idea picking up to the company at all, they may not see it as that profitable of a venture due to how much creating and sustaining and MMO could cost them. Personally I like the idea enough to hope for such a thing, even if it might be filled with immature players, smack talkers, etc.
It's a good day to beleive
I only have one thing to say to you all
