SWG is my favourite.  Not because it's all that good, but because there seems to be none better for my playstyle.  I play an entertainer in SWG, and SWG is the only MMORPG where you have so many options as an entertainer.  That's sad, given that the SWG entertainer profession has almost no content compared with the combat professions, but still, it's the best of a really bad bunch in terms of non-combat and non-crafting play

Ditto Lexxi, Eve is a clear winner.

I play it primarily as an industrialist and use the market and trade as a  "sandbox" simcity type game.  That said I've started to PvP and "pirate" the "shakes" you describe are a regular occurence.  Losing a ship/clone/implant is devastating but you just return and mine or rat or whatever and your doing what you want again.  The depth/scope/size/choices/politics/backstory/playerstories/options/expansions/developers/stability/balance....etc...etc make for one helluva game.

ps:  I know a lot of ppl who never "mine" but for me it works great as I run dual monitors and am mining as I read/surf/post this....

    1.  EVE online --  no game has more freedom built into it and no other game has such an epic scale. EVE is BIGGER than any other MMORPG out there. and the best thing is, you dont need to be level X to have fun or be useful. AND you can practically switch from being a "scout" to a "tank" to a "healer" by just changing ships...  it's incredible

2a. AO --  amazing game. great grafics, superb world design, vast landscape and really well made PvP. liked it a lot for it's overall complexity and the zillions of little details that were unnecessary but so much fun (thousands of different clothes, even bikinis, sunglasses and so on)...  really liked the death "penalty"
system-- it was logical and not much of a penalty included...

2b. EQ2 -- grafics are the best yet, combat system rocks like hell and the world is just beautiful. huge improvement over EQ1, which I liked too. what I miss are the locked encounters....

    3a.  EQ1 --  EQ was my 3rd MMORPG after
Meridian59 and UO...  I liked it a lot, until they started nerfing
everything... came back for the race war servers and had really much
fun for some time, but because you cannot level by doing PvP, the grind
got me again and ruined it for me

3b. AC1 -- loved it for some time, but it seemed too shallow for me quickly. no banks, people would get kicked out of a "crowded" town....  and that "towns" were rediculously small....   however, the combat system was superior to EQ in almost every aspect.

3c. GW/GW factions -- it's cheap;  even with little time, you can do a lot;   I like the many combinations of skills and the fact that you can change your second profession easily. (however I would like to change my first too...  ;-)  ).  And the storyline is a blast! it is much better than any other in any MMORPG.

EQ2 - Graphics, sounds, NPC voices, content, crafting, fun, quests, community, etc.

Tibia - Fun, community, player interactions, no level cap, etc.

It has got to be Shadowbane FTW.

Open PVP was great, but the best part was all the class options. How many main classes like 20 on top of that you could go kill world bosses for runes that gave you new spells and abilities? No quests or any of that crap that is clique in modern MMOs. Just killing mobs for randomly generated loot, (great idea) farming for runes, and then going to level an entire city. Shadowbane I miss you!

    Here it goes:

1 - Priston Tale - Was my first MMORPG, i guess i played it at 1998... somethin' like it... i like that game because of the fight system... its not like lineage2 that you find an enemy and kill it alone, at priston tale, spawns a lot of monsters around you and attack you... not only one, but 5, 6 or 7! Its much more cool...

2 - ROSE Online - I like the game system and that kind of graphics (that looks like Flyff, that i played too), it's very cool to build a cart.. and the items were cool... the graphics looks HAPPY =P

3 - Ragnarok Online - What should i say? Thousands of thousands of thousands of items, a cool anime graphic, cool game system and a really really really much more cool WoE! =P

    Hi Littlema,

I've been trying to get info about WoW elsewhere on the forums, but I've had no luck.  Since you actually play it, and since you play in a non-combat (mining) role, I wonder if you could tell me what options WoW has for non-combat and/or roleplaying?

If by RP you mean people speaking rather polite to each other and some "thee" and "thou" then you can pick any RP server. But that´s just about all of the "RP" you´re probably going to find.

As for options for non-combat characters, there are none. Only way to level up is do quests, which means alot of hack´n´slash, which is what this game is all about. Oh, and later raids, which is a roleplayers nightmare. All in all, if you´re looking for some easy entertainment without particular depth or demand, WOW is your thing. If you´re looking for some real RP and crafting, save your money and keep looking, like the rest of us does ;)

Or, even better, try Saga of Ryzom. Both crafters and RPers are pretty well tended to in there.

I didn´t say WOW is a bad game, I just say it´s a shallow game. No RP, no alternatives to fighting, and that is both true.
And "you don´t have to do quests to level up"...ummm are we talking about "World of Warcraft"? The game is ALL about quests, atleast until you reach hi-lvl.
The only "alternative" to questing in WoW is going out hunting without a quest, which is, as you will find out, so seldom it´s rather an oddity. Why go out hunting mob XY when you can (with 100% certainty) get a quest to hunt the same mob XY and gain more xp and items/money this way. Even people grouping to do an instance will first share their quests and THEN enter the instance.

And that´s that. Killing mobs and completing quests. There are NO other ways to gain xp.

You haven´t gained ANY xp from crafting or gathering activities and you never will either. You MIGHT earn some money crafting in low levels or atleast save the money to buy equipment, but that becomes irrelevant VERY early in the game, because the items people loot or get as quest-reward will always be better than the items you´re crafting.

I´m not talking opinions here, this is facts..and I´ve bought WoW first week out and played it in and out since then, so I know what I´m talking about.

Maple Story!  It's fun and easy to learn.
  • I don't have a favorite but the one I respect the most is Guild Wars.   I think their class/skill design is a work of art.  Nothing even comes close to novel and interesting mechanics  being fleshed out by the user base.  What they chose to limit and what they chose not to limit is a great harmony.

Whatever else people don't like about it being instanced or whatever isn't a concern for me.  Although I do not consider it an MMORPG, its design stuff is essentially the same for classes etc.
