I think that Medieval is better. I like it more cause its more exicting. Space is ok and everything but if i picked to go into the furture or go back in time i would have to go back in time to Medieval time. Anybody can take a laser gun and can shoot a guy but it takes skill to kill some one with a sword. Medieval is set in a better time, you have castles, and in mmorpgs you get magic, castles, stuff like that. In Sci-Fi you get space ships...woo like i care.

Fantasy, for all the magic etc, is actually very thematically limited and limited in the types of content.  SF is a very broad church and can handle much wilder and more interesting concepts.

There's a lot more distance between, say, Lensmen and Dune than there is between The Lord of the Rings and Conan.

    Give me SF.

    Medivalesque.

Mages and Warriors and such is more exciting than flying ships and the such.

    IMO

I prefer High Fantasy, but I'll play any MMOG in any genre that provides fun gameplay.

I like them both, but I prefer sci fi.

Cybermarines in a space barge battling acid spitting aliens, thats just so cool.

in sci-fi, you had better have a truly good lazer to kill me, as my spider-woven flack jacket not only reflects yer lazer shots it also throws it back to the target, and as far as either one being complicated? well id say there both bout as hard as a mouse click, that statement made me think you are a bit of a fascist, and theres much, much more too sci-fi than space ships, hell man wizards and sorcerers are sci-fi, science fantasy what have you call it, if you think all you get is a spaceship then you either have a very limited imagination and think all fantasy is like wow, or you just dont know sci-fi, and if you dont know sci fi then get out of this thread!!

    playing eq2 and two worlds

sorry for the double post, but i wanted to make clear i like sci-fi just as much as medeival fantasy, the two can be very intertwined, and sometimes indestinguishable,

    playing eq2 and two worlds

Medieval fantasy over Sci Fi Anytime

I'd much rather attack with a sword, bow or lance then "LAZERGUNPEWPEW!"

How about this, BOTH. Instead of havnig an end-game, the story evolves like the Civilization series. You start off in caves with sticks then after so many patches/expansions you get lasers and spaceships. Maybe instead of instances zones/shards you have alternate histories. Just think of the possibilities for a minute. You msy think, "Oh yeah I got a laser and tough body armour no stick is going to hurt me, but that would be the ultimate prize" and history is full of weaker armies with simple technology defeating stronger foes.

    No annoying animated GIF here!

First, why is everybody think of Sci-Fi only in space with ship. SWG is Sci-Fi and there was no ship/space at launch, what about Anarchy Online.

Second, did anyone here played Sci-Fi PnP game like CyberPunk or Shadowrun. Image a MMO about Shadowrun, that would be amazing, you get everything for everyone in it. For those who doesnt know Shadowrun, the timeframe is 2050, magic as come back to the earth waking all the creature. So you have all the creature you have in a medievall game and the future technology. Its Magic against Technology, there is city, forest.....Elf, Orc, Magician, Laser Gun, Armor, everything in one game. I think that game would be a major hit if its well done.

All the Medieval game today all look the same, Magician with Fireball, Warrior with sword and shield, they dont have any difference beside the gameplay.

Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!

Not all Sci-Fi is like EvE. Sci-Fi doesn't even have to involve space. You're just being ignorant.

I already came up with an idea like this in good detail quite a few months ago on the Dev Discussion forums. No one seemed to like it really.

I often have heard that  a Sword arte a extension of something someone is missing/lacking!! Is it true?
  • I'll only ever play Sci-Fi MMOGs...unfortunetly, I've been without one for a couple years now and I ain't happy!

If I had to pick one for development I'd go with a Cyberpunk game...

I would say either genre as long as I can melee stuff, make a charcter that I think looks cool, and the game isn't too stereotypical of its respective genre. Its more about the style, design, tone and art of a game then the genre.

But I mostly play Fantasy, because I like swords and I find most scifi games to be what I call corny Scifi, by corny I mean lasers and aliens and spaceships, pretty much every thing that one would typically see in a scifi movie/game, where as imo fantasy tends to vary a little bit more.

I think both genres  are translated too strictly into games however, scifi doesn't have to mean robots and lasers, likewise fantasy doesn't have to mean magic and monsters, its ok to be original.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

Medieval Fantasy due to the feeling that everything seems already explored in a futuristic setting.

There's no sense of 'I might be the first person to ever see this certain place' in futuristic MMO's, because then you'll remember that, in the future, Google Earth will be flawless :-D.

Alas nthnaoun life is too short to wade through your 77 page post history hehe. I do think sci-fi/medieval can exist in the same mmorpg. I mean a time-travelling mmorpg, [you can get away with a lot....HANG ON

Why not have a Doctor Who mmorpg!

I wouldn't expect you to wade through it all. I was just mentioning it for conversation, nothing more.

I personally think a more appropriate poll might better be addressed as "Antique VS Modern VS Futuristic" since we are obviously dealing with the preference of historical depiction i.e. setting.

From what appears to be the immediate consensus, Science Fiction is a literary term that merely denotes the dealing with an alternate scientific history whereas Medieval refers to the attributes commonly associated with the historical period of the Middle Ages specifically.

That being said, I would seem to prefer a futuristic setting from an obvious design standpoint - ultimately it is the only setting which allows for the existence of all three periods at the same time from a linear perspective.

    Oh and Hi all.

Edit: The "linear perspective" remark, since I saw someone mentioned time-travel.

Ahh I like the way you put things in perspective

In that case modern or antique, I don't have much interest for the future

I have played Medieval my whole like EQ for 6 years, Guild Wars for 2 and WoW for 2 and counting even though I dispise the game completely, I thinking of joining EQ2 just cause I am weird like that but, my idea of the poll came up on the perspective of the higher vote I would look more into those games. Ya get it...and from a request ill put in a new poll on the idea Modern, Antique, and Future
